I've visited Yates Center many times during my business travels. There used to be a place to eat in the building pictured at the first of your video, the big red brick building, white trim, with the "Hardware" sign on it. A big sandwich board stood out in front of the entrance just past the vehicle, announcing "Frannie's." You'd climb the stairs as you entered the building, going up to the second floor, where numerous tables and chairs were arranged in the rooms. Frannie had one meal to serve each day, along with a number of delicious homemade pies! The food was excellent and left you wanting more, for sure! And get this, you paid whatever amount you wanted to pay for your meal and pie! She had no prices on her food, that was left up to her customers. She said she just loved to cook for people and wanted them to have a good home-cooked meal every day. Such a dear, sweet lady. And such a wonderful memory of this enchanting city!
The guest book at Frannie's was very cool to see tons of famous people who had been there. we went to Frannie's several times a year, nothing else like it.
Awesome video! I've lived in Yates Center for over 40 years and my better half (who actually first hung that sign at Bert's!) has been here his whole life. YC was an awesome place to raise my children (who played and cheered in the old stadium), and it's a nice place for my retirement. Well done!
For sure! It would be hard to make a better set for a movie from the 1950’s! I got lucky on the stadium - had no idea it was there until I went to the park looking for playground equipment to play on 😂
My grandmother taught at New York Valley and was also the highest paid teacher in the county and started teaching at 17. She was also the first to have a car!
Thank you so much. Thos is my hometown! I lived here 18 years before I left for college. Hotel Woodson, the large corner building done up in limestone is a favorite. Mt grandparents once owned it, fed railroaders, and raised my mother there for a time. It's now a senior living facility.
It's such a beautiful building with such a rich history! It's now open to all low-income renters - a great location right on the historic square! Woodson Historic Residences 😊
Beautiful town! Don't think I'd get along with that vehicle- I just imagine what could go wrong with it. Loved the "Death go round" at the end. Beautiful day and area for an adventure, thanks for taking us along. Stay safe and GOD bless
That old stadium dedicated to the spirit of Jason 'Buger' Rutherford is a beauty! I looked & found little about him except he was only 16 when he died. Thanks again for another great travelogue.
My ancestors came from Wisconsin in 1870 to Woodson COunty and eventually moved into Yates Center. They had a pharmacy and music store in Yates Center but I don't know where in town. I know they lived on State Street. I have a letter they sent to my grandmother in 1927.
I remember reading a story about the motel rivalry at the junction of US 75 and US 54, now there is only one left. I was expecting more business at that area but like the population it has dwindled. My first thought the stadium was a WPA project
Thanks! John My In-Laws lived around Yates Center. We had family reunions in the High School. My wife's in-laws came to Yates Center from Iowa. They came on the train and rode in the cattle car with the live stock. It was free passage if you rode with the live stock.
Great video!! Have not been to Yates Center, KS, in a good long time. Use to pay a visit to SE Kansas at least once a year when I first arrived in Kansas way back in 1993 - was just exploring the state then and liked the area, as well as the Galena/Baxter Springs, KS, area. Guess I need to pay a visit down there sometime soon!!
Your work is superb! You ought to check out some of those very sparsely populated Kansas towns along the border with Colorado Keep up the outstanding work.!
I'm an old geezer-grandpa nearing that magical age of 65, now with an empty nest. Lost my wife in 2000,so it's just me. I'm looking for a small town to move to in about a year (currently in the Hilltop area of Wichita), after my youngest moves to my daughter in law's home country of Argentina. Your vids on small towns are instrumental in my search for a nice, QUIET place to live out the remainder of my life here on Earth. THANK YOU!
Great video of a small Kansas town. I grew up in Garnett, another county seat in Kansas not far from there and both towns are very similar in layout. Sad to see population dwindling in these small towns. Thanks.
Great little town, like the ole red brick streets My hometown has those too in the ole downtown areas Really like the drone views Helps to put thanks in perspective 👍😀
Oh dude I haven't been to Yates Center since I was probably 16 or 17. I grew up in central Kansas and for what ever reason I've been all over KS. Thanks!
I have a habit of "enthusing" too much, so will try to keep this brief: - the town square, the brick, the old football stadium - amazing. Have you ever been able to take in any small town football games on your travels? - I'm still struck by how well-suited your choice of music is, it's one of the first things I noticed about your videos. - love the new outro! And always love your outtakes! - thanks for the "Thanks" button!
I've definitely thought about it and have been there a few times. Great town - just a touch too big for these kinds of videos but I'll keep debating it :)
Interesting -- I bet a stranger sticks out like a sore thumb, if there's anyone around to notice. How many of those old storefronts have active businesses in them? I was born in Wichita, and lived in some other towns, notably Lawrence, but have been coastal most of my life. Still, next time I'm in Kansas I might feel the urge to visit Yates Center.
You are correct - I went and had a drink at the local watering hole and they knew I wasn't from there :) Very nice people though! It looked like about half the buildings were occupied on the square.
With all these small towns dwindling, have you ever come across one with a "Time Capsule" and there is no one left in the town to open it? Wow, and the car you're driving is very similar to the 1950's car my dad almost bought me for my 16th birthday, way back in the day. You pushed a button to start it and pushed some other buttons for the gears.
What a clean town! The downtown district bears a resemblance to Loup City Nebraska (pop. 1200 in 1988), the town I lived in and practiced in my first year after dental school. That stadium looks like a VERY VERY VERY small version of K-States old football stadium. Both were built from stone. THANKS for this video!
When the laundromat showed up, I had hoped to see my building next door to the west. 😕 Maybe it was skipped because the construction was underway at the time? It’s definitely one of the older brick buildings around town, and is actually for sale! We definitely appreciate the time and effort you’ve spent to highlight Yates Center!
Nice! I live in KC, and frequent some of these smaller towns in the southeast of Kansas for work, it’s very cool to see you tour these towns that I’ve driven through and give the history and detail. Keep it up sir!
Hey Coach. I like the road paving stones in the town center. I would not want the inside lane on that track, the concrete curb would spook me. The place looks clean and peaceful, in today's world , that's alright. Safe travels.
Hey, you found the playground equipment! I love the brick streets. Great little small town, certainly the type of small town I would love to live in. Are you gonna be doing a Woodson County ghost town video?
I liked that you got out and walked around the courthouse square and gave a bit of information about when the courthouse and the square and the town. History is interesting to me. Showing places is interesting but relating the story behind them and the history always brings it up a notch. Good Job Mr. Wise!
I looked this up on Google this morning. Seems there's another place like Yates Center Kansas and it's in Oklahoma. The town of Enid. It holds the nickname of"Queen Wheat City" and "Wheat Capital of Oklahoma" and of the United States, for it's immense grain storage capacity and has the third largest grain storage in the world. Thanks for the message! In regards to the videos and how long I stay, here is how I think of it. Obviously this kind of video shows about as much as there is and tells a lot of the history. For a more "road trip" type vlog, the idea is to pass through them stopping here and there. I give some info about the towns but if I stopped and did a video like this Yates Center one I'd never get to the end of the road :) For example this Sunday will be a video like that. I only went 98 miles but it took all day and I got done just before sunset. I know a lot of TH-cam videos that do road trips and don't show any of those towns at all - so I guess with mine you get "something" instead of nothing on videos like that.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy i figured that you mostly didn't have time to do all of the towns you go through but now and again it's nice to see of the towns instead of just a pass through. I know you are a coach at Wichita college and are limited on time. But I do think the ones where you do have time are the best for history etc. Will be watching on Sunday. Happy trails to you and God bless.
@@louispaparella5766 That's cool. Doesn't Hutchinson have the Kansas state fair every year? I think I read about there being a space museum there too. Thank you for the info. God bless.
@@deborahross9974 You are correct. In a political move, Hutch got the State Fair and later the Space Museum. Wichita got Wichita U. (now WSU) where Mr. Wise works!
I know this is probably the wrong video to post this, but my daughter is going to be in Manhattan Kansas in April. She's taking part in a yearly seminar/conference for folks in the Midwest who are associated with plant science and entomology. She works at Purdue University and her position is closely tied to the federal and state fields in those areas. I asked her to take me with her 😆 which is never going to happen of course.
@@TravelwithaWiseguyThat old country community humor is so good. And yet it is dying out with our little country communities. And today's urban people really need some humor. Those old timers had rough lives, and they made it through part on their ability to laugh at their hardships. Starting out with the band stage brought back good old memories for me. I have told in the comment section before about each little town having a night of the week that was their night the businesses stayed open. And during the summer, a community band, a school band, or a traveling group would be in band stage playing music for part of the evening. And towns without the permanent band stage would rope off a part of the park, or some parking places for the band to b perform from. One town in the area I grew up in even had this huge old steel wheeled wagon that would be pulled out and parked somewhere along the main drag for the band to play from. Those summer nights were really a special evening of shopping and socializing. One evening remained in my parents memories till they passed. This town, the band didn't start playing till close to business closing time, and would play for about a whole hour after business close. This particular night, the businesses had been closed for awhile, the sun has set, but it was still a warm humid summer's evening, and the people were sitting around chatting and listening to stirring patriotic tunes. One of those old Iowa evening thunderstorms had been hanging out in the northwest, but finally decided it was time to rush in and halt the evening festivities. The band leader came to the realization that the storm was very close indeed, but wanted to finish the up beat patriotic song they were playing before giving the evening over to the storm. My folks laughed and laughed everytime they remembered it because of how the tempo picked up more and more as the song continued and the storm drew closer and closer. They finished just as the first wind gusts and sprinkles hit main street, and I do not know if that song had ever been played at that quick of tempo ever before. And as a kid, I remembered the mad dash by people carrying their shopping bags and the band members with instruments and sheet music in hand scurrying about heading for cars or shelter. What an evening! The buildings were so well kept, and looked so nice. Almost like we had slipped back to one of those wonderful days of the 1950's. We only needed the band playing and the streets filled with all the shoppers and socializers!
Interesting video, the town looks eerily abandoned. I wish you would give us a little more time to read the signs in your videos, just a minor critique, love your work and share them with my Okie brother
Noted! It's a difficult balance because I want the video to continue moving along at a nice pace. I used to not include those kind of signs at all, but I think some of them are interesting. You can always pause the video too :)
@@TravelwithaWiseguy I do pause and reread but when you pause you get a pop up that covers part of the message. Do what you think is best, I think a additional 2 count wouldn’t bore most people. You are the boss 🤓
So did you initially feel like you weren't in Kansas anymore...here's the formula: yellow bricks=not Kansas, red bricks=Kansas! Loved your video Coach...be good and safe!
My family came to YC by wagon, where my grandmother Cora was born in 1887. I was part of the "Time Capsule" opening with County Commissioner Bill Linde and was able to put my family info back in where it was sealed and the new marker installed. Hope you were able to go in the beautiful Hardware Company. It's a treat! Thanks for sharing.
Where are the humans?? Totally deserted, a scene repeated in the multitude vlogs I have watched from various vloggers. Rather creepy, total desertion apart from some vehicles parked and driving around. I guess if you want a quiet place to die, this would be it.
We're a very rural and outdoors-centric community - you'll find many people are at a sporting event, spending time outdoors at Cross Timbers State Park and several other lakes, working out at one of our two workout facilities in town, farming or ranching in some capacity, cruising on our country roads and through our landscapes in trucks, fourwheelers and side-by-sides, or visiting friends and family. The square is more lively throughout the work week 😊 And the pool is packed with kids in the summertime! It's definitely a more quiet life than you'll find in a bigger city, but we have quite a few awesome local events and businesses that you might not expect given our population. And the community support can't be beat. We've got some great revival efforts that have been ongoing for several years now - and some awesome Airbnbs for those seeking an escape into a quiet, quaint, and slower-paced place to relax and enjoy small town living. We love visitors and have some fun stores and attractions to offer - you can learn more at woodsoncountychamber.org if you're interested! Hope that helps your mental picture of our community feel a bit less spooky 😉

@@deborahross9974 You are correct. In a political move, Hutch got the State Fair and later the Space Museum. Wichita got Wichita U. (now WSU) where Mr. Wise works!
Dwight Shrute would love this place.. fit for a Hay King
Hahaha yes! Someone could open a Schrutte Store in Yates Center!
Sounds fun!
I have been told that years ago some folks called the town Yapes Crossing true or not I don't know.
That's my home town 😊
Nice town!!
"Bert's Tavern' We only look expensive"
Uhh, Ok.........
Haha I like the sense of humor 😊
Awesome comment Ron! Thanks for the great visual descriptions and memories!
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Thank you for bringing these memories back to life!
We spent better than two hours in their museum. I think the nearby state fishing lake is interesting for its old stonework- maybe CCC.
I did not know the hay capital of the world was in Kansas!
I appreciate the suggestion and I'll keep that in mind! Thanks!
So did you initially feel like you weren't in Kansas anymore...here's the formula: yellow bricks=not Kansas, red bricks=Kansas! Loved your video Coach...be good and safe!
But . . . I saw both!
Haha follow the yellow brick road ... to the red brick road!
That's about the size of Fredonia Kansas, but they rule the city like it might be New York City.or some large town.
Assuming I wanted to move there anyone know what I would have to pay to rent a modest 1 bedroom apartment ?
Check out rent.com!
I made a large comment. Where did it go?
I don't know - I looked in the "held for review" section and there's nothing there either.

A real eastland
Where are the humans?? Totally deserted, a scene repeated in the multitude vlogs I have watched from various vloggers. Rather creepy, total desertion apart from some vehicles parked and driving around. I guess if you want a quiet place to die, this would be it.
They're doing what "normal" people do, working!
