Kansas is somewhat unique to have the number of 4-year colleges and 2-year community colleges within our infrastructure - for our state's population base. The fact that our schools maintain their attendance numbers speaks to the excellent educational and collegiate experiences appreciated by the students and provided by the dedicated faculty, such as yourself, Coach Wise! I am a fan of KU and KState, as well as WSU, Ft. Hays, and all of our schools! We're fortunate to have them! One question - where did you catch the character on the bike at the end? Didn't resemble a Jayhawk or Wildcat, maybe a rabbit or pig??? Figure "it" was out for an afternoon joy ride! Excellent trip! Thanks for taking us along!
I believe the fuzzy crash helmet covers are primarily among the crouch rocket and dual purpose crowd of bikers. They are fun to see. I have also seen large Mohawk hair and alien antennas on helmets. I have a few stickers on my helmet, rather small and not that attention getting. But helmet additions are usually humorous and fun to check out. Just bike community members having their fun. My two stickers are "Born to ride, forces to work" and "I am so far behind I think I am ahead". Both are to poke fun at my detractors. Some say I go too slow, and go to long. But that is a matter of opinion. Like the Wise Guy, I like to wander around and take in the scenery. I loved the views of the impending weather coming across the prairies. I have always held that sight with awe and consideration. Maybe because of being a farmer, a truck driver, and a motorcyclist, all of which are effected by Mother Nature's weather. Another good one John! Keep up the good work!
Fellow Wichitan here. I just found your channel and am really enjoying the videos. Our best memories have been made “off-the-beaten-path” in less touristy areas.

71+ year old FUD here. Another fine educational and entertaining video! I used to frequent that area of the state when we lived in Manhattan while my wife was in graduate school at KSU. I spent quite a bit of time recreating in and around Pott County. How many viewers remember the POTT COUNTY PORK & BEAN BAND from the 1970’s ? You're an adventurer! Taking the back roads, especially gravel roads on a road trip, is definitely a Kansas thing to do! I'm a Kansas girl. I have lived in Topeka for almost 50 years. We would take day or evening trips driving the backroads and enjoying the scenery. If a small town had a restaurant, we'd have a meal and visit with whomever wanted to visit with us. I don't know if that's a Kansas thing or just because my ex was outgoing, and all of us enjoyed learning from locals about their life and their town. Gas has gotten so expensive that I don't do it anymore. Thank you for taking us along on your journey. I appreciate listening to you and the views from your travel. It brings back memories of times spent with my ex and our kids. Again, thank you.
Hey John! KU Student & previous resident of Oskaloosa! Was cool to see you drive through there. Old Jefferson town is definitely overlooked by locals, besides the yearly Easter Egg hunt! Old Settlers Reunion Festival is held in the last weekend of June annually and is probably the peak of the year in Oskaloosa as far as activities go, if you end up coming back, that would be the time!

Another cool video. Should've stopped in Lecompton. It's the first Territorial Capitol of Kansas, and there is a pretty cool museum there. My mother (and her brothers and sister) somehow ended up graduating from high school there in the 50's when Lecompton High School was still open, before consolidating with Perry. Weird, considering they were all born in Goodland. Lol! I have an old Hutch News "1991 Kansas High School Football Preseason Special" It has the Classifications and District Assignments in it. My Dad and I took 36 HWY "State Championship Highway" from Colorado to St. Joseph a couple of years ago, and stopped at every high school and football stadium along the way. It was pretty cool, if you're into that sort of thing. It's sad to see Western Kansas fading away.

limestone church, st joseph's catholic church in flush. pretty much the only building left standing. there are a couple of other buildings there that belong to the catholic church. there are alot of small towns like that in north east kansas, which basically only has a catholic church. st mary's catholic church in st benedict is a prime example. beautiful church, one of my faves.

I've spent several year in the Manhattan area and never found anything I would call legitimate backroads, so I hope your video can give me more places to roam! I grew up a little ways off Hwy 69 in Kansas and that, K-7, and Old 52 are the only "main veins" where I grew up, so most of the rest of the roads are rural gravel grids. Up here the land is and has been mostly privately owned for generations now and that gravel grid doesn't really exist as a result. Makes it hard for someone like me to feel at home roaming in my car!
This video is very much a drive through my teenage years. I grew up on Alma, spent some time in these areas, west of Oskaloosa and north of Ft. Riley, south through Council Grove and back east through Osage City. Really had tons of fun and good times...
@@TravelwithaWiseguy During a recent trip home for a Celebration of Life, I got inspired by some of your videos to travel back to Utah on US 56 and US 50. In fact, made a small video about Coolidge here on my channel... Who knew there was a good place to eat in Coolidge, KS???!!!

Very interesting (as usual), and while I got hooked on your channel after all the videos you did in SW Missouri (where I grew up and where I retired to), you are now on familiar turf yet again, because our son is with the 1st Infantry Division at Ft Riley and we have driven that I70 route, Lawrence => Ft Riley (just past Manhattan) every time we visit him (and now we know of some local historical sites we can visit as a part of those trips) 👍👍👍
Nice drive! A lot in Jefferson County I am familiar with, living and schools. Old Town Park is the former location of Ozawkie with a few city blocks remaining. I am proud to say I engraved and installed the Matchie memorial marker at the reservation cemetery. The former train depot at St. George was hidden by the old elevator in the video. Look forward to more travels!
That's what I'm talking about! I love those drives through the countryside. Great video Coach. I even found a small Irish town that could be my retirement location (Emmett). 🤣 Thanks for taking us along on your journey.
People moving to St George because Manhattan schools are to populated as are Wamego schools, and taxes are lower. But housing is high in all those communities.
Hey Coach. Some quiet historical places to live along the way. I like Oskaloosa museum with the water tower model. Manhattan is a big place, stadium building looks good. Safe travels.
A Swamp Angel is a Civil War Cannon and that road is off Military Trail Rd, West of St. George. It went from Fort Leavenworth to Ft Riley KS. I live on Oregon Trail Rd. and love your channel. I tried to upload a photo of one but no luck.
those little towns between wichita and manhattan/lawrence are all so interesting. gotta make sure to fill the tank before heading out in either direction, some of those real small towns roll up the sidewalks at like 8 or 9pm and you might not be able to find an open gas station. I definitely haven't been stranding before, nope not me.
That was a fantastic meander. I've wandered a lot south of I-70, never north. Got to love a town named Flush. I didn't know about that reservation that was interesting. Oskaloosa museum looked like you could spend an afternoon soaking up local history Ok bunny ears on the sport bike he'll grow out of it.
In 08 I did a job at the Jeffries Energy Center near Emmett. Still have the tee shirt from the bar there. Rode my motorcycle all over that area. In St. George, where Willie's Hideout Bar and Grill is located was The Green Chicken Bar. Used to know the story of the name... Oh yeah...KU Class of 64...RCJHGKU...Thanks for the trip down memory's lane!
Your videos are relaxing to me! I love all the gems you go to in our vast country! Love watching you videos! Have you done a video on the Chisholm trail yet? I haven’t made it through all your videos yet, but haven’t ran into one yet.
Yooo im in manhattan as we speak! Been here since 2008. Fun fact about that aggivill sign. That small bar under the wird aggivil used to say welcome to in smaller print. So the sign said. Aggivill welcome to. Whole town practically clowned on the city planners soo hard they got rid of the welcome to part of the sign lol
I saw that you went through Pottawatomie County, Kansas. I grew up in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. The Pottawatomie in Oklahoma have a health center, a very good grocery store, and a museum. They also have a casino or two. In Oklahoma, American Indians can run casinos. They also have their own police forces, etc. But there are no reservations. Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma has an interesting population history. In the 1930s, the population peaked at around 60,000 due to an oil boom. Then it declined, not reaching 60,000 again until the 2000s. This recent growth has been mainly in the north part of the county, closest to Oklahoma City. I did not see a death-go-round in this video, but just saw a video on Facebook where a guy put a jet engine on a death-go-round. It was truly a death-go-round with the engine attached.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy He did run it to the full potential. It did turn pretty fast though. He had a skit where kids got on it and their parents came and got them off!
I worked security overnights @ the Prairie Band Potawatomi Casino 5 miles southwest of Mayetta for 5 1/2 months last year. A few times I drove up to downtown Mayetta & got breakfast @ the 1886 restaurant before I headed home to Topeka.
Oskaloosa wasn't the just the first city in the state to elect an all female city council. It was the first in the country. Did a paper on it in college. Reporters from all over the country came to Oskaloosa and wrote stories about it.
Directions starting from highway 4 (south of Manhattan) to Lawrence using backroads. From Highway 4 turn right onto echo cliff road From echo cliff road turn left onto harveyville blacktop road Harveyville blacktop road turns into 89th Turn right onto Auburn road when you get there Turn left onto first street which turns into 93rd street Continue on 93rd street for many miles and then it’ll bend twice and turn into 89th street again Fallow 89th street until it turns into a gravel road called 1150 road 1150 road will turn left and turn into 100th road and then that’ll turn right and turn into 1250 road 1250 road will meet 250 road and you can EITHER turn left to go to Stull and then turn right to go towards 6th street in Lawrence OR you can turn right (from 1250 road onto 250 road) and it’ll turn into 251st diagonal street and will eventually let out just south of Iowa street in Lawrence.
Well..... you can tell it is a college town. Very nice drone work ! Really pretty area, very nice lake. I have to go sell a car (don't ask please). Be good, be safe !!
John, this was a fun trip. The Pottawatomie Reservation was an interesting place.. So beautiful. My parents and I went to look at a. house for sale in Oskaloosa and didn't like it. Seems we saw Perry Lake but I sure don't remember much about. I did have relatives living in Manhattan. My paternal uncle had a book store on the campus where the students could buy their school books etc. I think his son took over the store but I haven't heard anything about that part of the family in years. Thanks for the ride. Happy trails to you and God bless.
Was it Varney's bookstore? It's still a bookstore on the edge of K-State's campus, and near the entrance to "Aggieville", where the college kids hang out when they're not in class.
@@HerNokieness I never knew the name of the book store. It was run by my uncle-in-law as he was married to my paternal aunt. His name was Charles Ballard. His son went by the name of Charlie Bob as he was a junior. God bless.
you should take a trek on the old pony express trail..... that is highway 36. i am kind of biased because i am originally from nemaha county (seneca), but kinda cool you drove through flush. my dad and uncles went to school there at the catholic school. my dad said there was a watering hole there in flush too, besides the church. only the church stands there now, but also rock creek high school, which was created when westmoreland and st george consolidated.
my maternal family farm is in northwest Riley County (about 30 miles NW of Manhattan) near the ghost town of "May Day", there are undocumented US Govt. (Army/Veteran) headstones on the farm (long since fallen over) and evidence of wagon ruts from a short-lived "Ft. Riley/Ft. Kearney (Neb) Wagon Train trail... I've called & emailed the KS & Riley County Historical Societies, and Topeka TV Stations, Ft. Riley & Representative Tracy Mann, but nobody seems to have an interest in "documenting" these old military headstones...
I’m very familiar with that area including May Day and Winkler plus the long gone settlements of Bodaville and Fact. I used to spend a lot of time hunting, fishing and exploring on Tuttle Creek reservoir and the surrounding area when we lived in Manhattan from the early 1970’s to 1980. Are those head stone readable? What materials are they made of? IF those soldiers were veterans of the Civil War AND the head stones list what unit they were in, you may find some history about those men in the officers official journals of the battles of the civil war. There is, or was a complete hard bound set of those journals at Fort Harker historic site at Kanopolis Kansas. Those may be found on line now. Someone should at least set those head stones up right. Then photograph them. Also do a rubbing of them. Make sure they don’t get plowed up, which has happened to more grave sites in Kansas than we will ever know. I would certainly like to see those head stones and remnants of that trail. Maybe I’ll just have to go knocking on some doors in that area some day to see what I can find.
Great video! When was this filmed? It's been pretty dry here the past few weeks. You mentioned the growth of St. George. There are a lot of people moving to just east of Manhattan in Pottawatomie County.
I love the red brick roads in Mayetta (and red brick roads in many of the towns you visit), but had to laugh at the Mayetta Fire Dept with its one car garage building... hopefully, the fires stay small!
there are alot of old catholic churches like that in north east kansas. in very small communities. my dad went to that catholic school in flush, but there are many others. st benedict kansas has one beautiful church as well. my great grandpa actually helped build that thing. it is listed in historical places. i urge anyone to go up there to see it. limestone church with amazing paintings and sculptures on the inside.
I haven't checked your vids...have you checked the site where Knute Rockne's plane crashed near Matfield Green? The rancher who found the wreckage passed away a few years ago but I think his family still operates the ranch.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy I need to join your channel some day. I watch all your videos, and want to start doing something similar myself. I would like to visit the county seat of every county in the state.
Coach, when you head west off the page, do you start to feel kind of weird and just drive around in a trance like state? How long does it take to overcome this seemingly "dissociative fugue"? You don't have to answer if you feel uncomfortable in doing so.....😉

I wonder if a card game had anything to do with the name , Flush. Being a farm boy , I like to see the cats win! When I went to school at Valley Center one of my class mates was a Nesmith a descendant of man that started basketball.
my dad went to grades 1 thru 5 in the catholic school at flush. my uncle actually graduated from flush high school. then, my grandparents moved to seneca where my dad graduated from sts peter and paul catholic school. my grandma told me she had to walk a mile just to get to her ride to take her to work in manhattan.. she was a civilian nurse at both manhattan hospital and on base in ft riley.
Enjoy your uploads, but would love to see you go to some of these small towns on a Saturday when there is activity. Spend some cash (not credit card) at some of the general stores and saloons/diners to help support them. You might even get a few locals that will give you insights on their towns on camera.
I do that often actually. For example in this video I did that 3 times. MOST locals don’t want to be on camera and I spent cash throughout the day. I just didn’t show it.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy That's great to hear you spending some cash. Do any of the establishments at least allow you to film inside on occasion as long as you don't try to interview anyone? Thank you for your reply.
Usually they don't mind. For example in Mt Ayr, Nebraska, I showed the entire inside of that bar and talked with him at length. In this video, I was given a tour of Old Jefferson by the ladies there (they didn't want to be on camera). Also, for example, in this video I had limited time. You can see it was getting dark at the end. Often a conversation with a local can take a long time - I love that, but I also have times where I can't get to the other places needed to show a vlog properly. I wish I had unlimited time to do things like that.

Love this video and seeing the cemetery
I love he shows the cemeteries.
Beautiful scenery! I love all the small towns in between KU and K-State. Wonderfully done John❤❤
Many thanks! 😊
A great little route between Lawrence and Lecompton is the scenic river road.
For sure!
That's what I'm talking about! I love those drives through the countryside. Great video Coach. I even found a small Irish town that could be my retirement location (Emmett). 🤣 Thanks for taking us along on your journey.
Thanks! Emmett looks like it has a watering hole too 😊
THANKS COACH 😊 BE SAFE
Thank you, I will 😊
I plan to do some bicycle touring around Kansas soon. I was born in Wichita but live in SW Missouri. My Father graduated from WSU!
I agree - it was a different kind of trip, but fun!
Great video brother 🎉
Appreciate it!
I live a little outside of Wichita so nice to see this video
A Swamp Angel is a Civil War Cannon and that road is off Military Trail Rd, West of St. George. It went from Fort Leavenworth to Ft Riley KS. I live on Oregon Trail Rd. and love your channel.
I tried to upload a photo of one but no luck.
Thanks for the info!
Hi john cool old gas stations . Cheers mate🇦🇺
Thanks! Fun trip!
those little towns between wichita and manhattan/lawrence are all so interesting. gotta make sure to fill the tank before heading out in either direction, some of those real small towns roll up the sidewalks at like 8 or 9pm and you might not be able to find an open gas station.
Definitely found some cool stuff - had no idea where the day would lead!
Probably the largest casino in Kansas is on the Prairie Band reservation with LOTS of stuff, games, hotel, pool, indoor golf range, buffet of course
This is a trip I want to take next summer!
Fun little drive!
Nice! Would love to get one of those t-shirts 😊
Your videos are relaxing to me! I love all the gems you go to in our vast country! Love watching you videos! Have you done a video on the Chisholm trail yet? I haven’t made it through all your videos yet, but haven’t ran into one yet.
Thanks so much! I haven’t done the Chisholm Trail but I’ve got it on my long to-do list 😊
Interesting 🤔
Have you ever tried to trace the communities along the Santa Fe Trail?
Not yet but it’s on my bucket list 😊
Oh my that had to have been a heckuva ride!!
@@TravelwithaWiseguy He did run it to the full potential. It did turn pretty fast though. He had a skit where kids got on it and their parents came and got them off!
The OK tribe is Citizen Band I believe with a branch office in Rossville KS
the same goes here in kansas. every reservation has a casino. kickapoo, sac n fox, potawatomi, and iowa tribes
Thanks for the info! Wikipedia needs to update their info 😂
Nice area. I sure miss road trips
😊
Directions starting from highway 4 (south of Manhattan) to Lawrence using backroads.
From Highway 4 turn right onto echo cliff road
From echo cliff road turn left onto harveyville blacktop road
Harveyville blacktop road turns into 89th
Turn right onto Auburn road when you get there
Turn left onto first street which turns into 93rd street
Continue on 93rd street for many miles and then it’ll bend twice and turn into 89th street again
Fallow 89th street until it turns into a gravel road called 1150 road
1150 road will turn left and turn into 100th road and then that’ll turn right and turn into 1250 road
1250 road will meet 250 road and you can EITHER turn left to go to Stull and then turn right to go towards 6th street in Lawrence OR you can turn right (from 1250 road onto 250 road) and it’ll turn into 251st diagonal street and will eventually let out just south of Iowa street in Lawrence.
Well..... you can tell it is a college town. Very nice drone work ! Really pretty area, very nice lake. I have to go sell a car (don't ask please). Be good, be safe !!
Nice tour. Thank you.
i travel I-70 for work tbh, soon ill be going from lawrence to junction for work
Have you been to Pillsbury Crossing, outside of Manhattan?
Yes I went there a few years ago and it was a very short clip in one of my first videos 😊
yes 🎉
John, this was a fun trip. The Pottawatomie Reservation was an interesting place.. So beautiful. My parents and I went to look at a. house for sale in Oskaloosa and didn't like it. Seems we saw Perry Lake but I sure don't remember much about. I did have relatives living in Manhattan. My paternal uncle had a book store on the campus where the students could buy their school books etc. I think his son took over the store but I haven't heard anything about that part of the family in years. Thanks for the ride. Happy trails to you and God bless.
Thanks and yes I thought the reservation was very interesting too. Different than what I thought I’d find!
Was it Varney's bookstore? It's still a bookstore on the edge of K-State's campus, and near the entrance to "Aggieville", where the college kids hang out when they're not in class.
@@TravelwithaWiseguyThat's my tribe's reservation. 🤗
@@HerNokieness I never knew the name of the book store. It was run by my uncle-in-law as he was married to my paternal aunt. His name was Charles Ballard. His son went by the name of Charlie Bob as he was a junior. God bless.
I'm born and raised in manhattan but I've lived in lawrence for over 15 years.
Fun video!! I live in Overland Park, Ks. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!! ❤💙
Awesome! Thank you!
you should take a trek on the old pony express trail..... that is highway 36. i am kind of biased because i am originally from nemaha county (seneca), but kinda cool you drove through flush. my dad and uncles went to school there at the catholic school. my dad said there was a watering hole there in flush too, besides the church. only the church stands there now, but also rock creek high school, which was created when westmoreland and st george consolidated.
Interesting areas
For sure!
I love the outtakes this time. lol I had a laugh at the guy with the bunny helmet. I can't take someone seriously if they have a helmet like that!
Haha! 😂
Thanks for the memories.
👍🏼👍🏼
my maternal family farm is in northwest Riley County (about 30 miles NW of Manhattan) near the ghost town of "May Day", there are undocumented US Govt.
I never heard of Swamp Angel.
One of my friends’ relatives is buried at St George’s Cemetery.
Great video! When was this filmed? It's been pretty dry here the past few weeks. You mentioned the growth of St. George. There are a lot of people moving to just east of Manhattan in Pottawatomie County.
Thanks! It was filmed just a couple weeks ago.
I love the red brick roads in Mayetta (and red brick roads in many of the towns you visit), but had to laugh at the Mayetta Fire Dept with its one car garage building... hopefully, the fires stay small!
Yes that was a cool downtown in Mayetta! 😊
The modern fire department is two blocks north
I went to high school with one of the track coaches at WSU.
That was a beautiful old church in Flush. They must have had a lot of money to make that in such a small town.
there are alot of old catholic churches like that in north east kansas. in very small communities. my dad went to that catholic school in flush, but there are many others. st benedict kansas has one beautiful church as well. my great grandpa actually helped build that thing. it is listed in historical places. i urge anyone to go up there to see it. limestone church with amazing paintings and sculptures on the inside.
Swamp Angel is a very interesting name for a town
Agreed! Kind of wish it was a bigger community 😊
i know all these places very well ,
I haven't checked your vids...have you checked the site where Knute Rockne's plane crashed near Matfield Green? The rancher who found the wreckage passed away a few years ago but I think his family still operates the ranch.
I’ve done one on Matfield Green but didn’t go to the crash site. Wasn’t available that day.
If you ever do Pawnee of Ness counties, let me know. We have historic sites in some of our pastures that you can't get to normally.
Will do someday!
@@TravelwithaWiseguy I need to join your channel some day. I watch all your videos, and want to start doing something similar myself. I would like to visit the county seat of every county in the state.
Sounds like a fun goal!
Coach, when you head west off the page, do you start to feel kind of weird and just drive around in a trance like state? How long does it take to overcome this seemingly "dissociative fugue"? You don't have to answer if you feel uncomfortable in doing so.....😉
😂😂
i drove through kansas 45 years ago in the winter. i ate dinner in dodge city. i heard 2 farmers talking about pheasant hunting. do you know if there are still pheasants in kansas.
the ks. game and wild life department ruined phesent and quail hunting in ne. ks. they brought in ewild turkey , destrouing the quail &phesent pop., but n. centeral ks. is sposto be best phesant , lie around bellville , manketo, smithcenter .
Looks like you need to head northward to north Dakota
Would love to!
my grandma was from flush
Were you filming this during the Huricane Helene time frame? If so are those dark clouds in the distance the outer ridge of it?
I think this was before that. I don’t believe we felt any of those effects out here.
I wonder if a card game had anything to do with the name , Flush. Being a farm boy , I like to see the cats win! When I went to school at Valley Center one of my class mates was a Nesmith a descendant of man that started basketball.
Actually it was named for someone with the last name Floersch. I guess Flush sounded better haha. It would’ve been before toilets 😂
James Naismith
my dad went to grades 1 thru 5 in the catholic school at flush. my uncle actually graduated from flush high school. then, my grandparents moved to seneca where my dad graduated from sts peter and paul catholic school. my grandma told me she had to walk a mile just to get to her ride to take her to work in manhattan.. she was a civilian nurse at both manhattan hospital and on base in ft riley.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy cute!
@@ryrythefryguy4645 Interesting history.
Wow! Ya got my attention with the ALL women administration.😁....but, can they drive?😆j/k
Oomph 😂
HAPPY NATIONAL COACHES DAY❤❤❤❤
Thanks! Did I miss that? 😂🤣
