I have everything setup correctly( I hope) but all I’m hearing is air from the tube. No notes or coming out when I press on the midi keyboard
I have the apollo twin x interface. I did everything but had no luck. I tried to tweak settings, but I only heard a sound out of the mxr talk box itself. Any advice?
Hey man great video. I am using Ableton, which Vst would you reccommand to have a talkbox patch ? I would really appreciate, thank you
I'm not too familiar with Ableton but find a synthesizer vst and go with that. If it has a lot of synths just pick the one you're most familiar with.
You're going to want these settings:
1. Monophonic keys; it means you can only play one note at a time. (This is important)
2. A single sawtooth wave with no effects. Take out any reverb, echo, etc.
3. Add a little glide/ portamento
If you follow those steps you should be able to get a talk box Patch with most software synths regardless of what DAW you're using.

I would check the settings on the synth on your DAW sometimes it’s called glide, sometimes it called portamento. If that software synth doesn’t have that setting I would recommend trying another synth. Logic has a pretty good variety and I’m sure some of its synths has a glide setting.

I usually just go by ear. You dont want too much or else it will sound weird. Keep the glide(portamento) short so you can hear it but not so much that its overpowering.
I can't get my talk box to play through my mpk mini midi controller using carbon, Im able to use my controller with logic and play whatever virtual instruments but I can't hear myself speak using the talk box both with & without headphones. Are there settings on the MPK that must be configured? What about on Logic Pro?
And noone even responded to this comment. Honestly I can't get it to work etiher.
I've gotten this far, but how would I go about it hearing other audio in the same file while recording the talk box , without all the audio going through the talk box?
You would want to mite the other tracks. But I can see the problem with that, you would need to hear the other so you can listen and play along to the song.
I've said this in other videos and comments before but this is a good reason to say it again. This way of using a talk box isnt ideal. The best way to record a talk box is to record it through a microphone, the same way you record vocals.
I made a video on how to record a talk box the right way. Find it on my channel if you're interested. Using a software instrument and recording it through the same DAW works but has too many drawbacks.

I'm using the method from your other MIDI keyboard talk box video and all I can really hear is the synth from my DAW. I can hear the effects of the talbox but the synth sound overpowers the talk box.
You only want sound coming from the talk box, turn down/off the monitors.

Super helpful! So this makes sense for recording talk box with no playback, but if you want to record talk box over an existing song, how can you route that playback so that the playback goes into headphones rather than through the talk box tube? I think there's a way to do it with Logic sends, but for some reason I can't figure it out. Maybe I need a more complicated audio interface?
The easiest way might be to play the song on your phone with headphones on and record the talk box as the song plays. Then add the track afterwards?
I guess this is another problem that I'm going to have to solve and make a video on... but recording a talk box through midi is probably the most complicated way to record a talk box. Having a hardware synth and recording it the regular way is much easier and you have less problems to run into.
I have a video called "how to record a talk box" if you wanna check that out but that is the standard way of recording a talk box. The way I show it in this video is the alternative.
@@JEzra-cx7bx yep, that's actually what I ended up doing, though I technically didn't need my phone since I could play the playback on QuickTime or iTunes with and route that audio to headphones using my general mac audio output settings while the Logic output sent the synth output to the talk box. Hacky workaround that got the job done, but it was a massive pain to then have to resync each take in logic. I know there's a way to have multiple outputs/sends in Logic, a friend of mine with a more complicated interface figured out how to do it on his rig, but I haven't figured it out yet.
Glad you figured it out! When I play my talk box I use a hardware synth so it makes everything a lot easier, especially when it comes to recording but I understand that everyone is in a different situation.

I’m trying to do this setup but can’t get sound to come out of the tube . What audio setting should I use in logic ?
This is a hard thing to tackle because it could be a lot of different things that could be wrong.
I have a few more videos going over how to do this, I would say re-watch this video and pay close attention to how I set up the talk box and the settings in Logic and if you have to wat h some of my other videos as well.
Make sure your volumes are turned up on the talk box and in logic, also make sure to activate the track by pressing the little button next to the record button on the track itself. That will allow the sound to play on the track.
If that stuff doesnt work get back to me and I'll help you further.
Thanks for responding . Most of my confusion is coming from me not knowing what my audio output device setting should be and what my audio input device setting should be. I currently have them both on Scarlett 4i4 usb. These settings can be found when you press the Logic Pro tab and then go to preferences.

Can You Use Mixcraft with a Talkbox?
As long as it has a synth plug in where you can make a talk box patch.
What synth did you open the ESM in?
Open up an empty instrument track, Press X to open up the mixing tab, then where it says "input" select ESM.

How did you get to ES M? It doesnt appear to be a stock instrument in logic
It is a stock plug in for Logic. When you open a new track you might be able to find it under software instruments. It's been a while since I used it but I know it's there

Is there any way to apply the Talk Box effect on an existing audio vocal track without having to use an actual talk box at all?
How do I know which keys to press when saying a word and that it sounds correct in the talkbox.
That all depends on the song you are trying to play. But if you just want to talk I would start with only using notes in a specific scale. You can pick any scale but I would start with the Cmaj scale because it's the simplest one to start with imo.

Yes, if you want to sing a song on a talk box you need to play the right notes that correspond with the song. Knowing how to play the piano will help you greatly.
I don't see your microphone! I thought it needs a mic in order to use it. It does have to be connected with the microphone right? It is all audio going through midi! You should explain how the microphone is being used, so that it's not to confusing I like what you did in the video to show the steps though! You just need to add how to hook up the microphone in order to record.

Open a new instrument track, select ESM. Or open a new I instrument track and open up your mixer menu, then add ESM on that track.
