    Iodine isn't bad for shrimp, as a matter of fact, shrimp like krill are high in iodine. BTW, you should try these self sustaining tanks with other species. Triops are a good option, so are Killifish and livebearing fish like guppies and platys. Killifish would be interesting, because their eggs can survive out of water. They are one of the few vertebrate animals that have a behavior called diapause, which stops or delays the growth of eggs until conditions are right

    • @ADRdaniel
      @ADRdaniel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      George Charalambous my hypnosis is that a simpler set of genetics is harder to mess up. So a low amount of seed genetics shouldn't effect the diversity of the shrimp. Also the system should not change in a wat that requires them to adapt. So the genetic downfall is more likely to be genetic drift then inbreeding. According to my hypothesis.

    1:30 You mentioned that it would need a shielding against radiation. As far as I know, some smaller creatures can handle lots of radiation. Like the LD50/30 for a human is somewhere around 3 Gray, whereas for a wasp its at about 1000 Gray (according to wikipedia). For smaller creatures like these shrimps it should be even higher, right? Would be cool it you could expose them to some radiation (but be careful).

There used to be a little duckweed in there, but that has decayed after a period of not growing. There also used to be 2 small pond snails, but they never reproduced and later died. The algae growth used to fluctuate wildly, but it has now stabilized to a small "bush" at the bottom. It's pretty neat and shows no signs of stopping.

    This is a pretty cool idea- Cody. I'm sure you could devise a way to replace the atmosphere and dissolved gasses for a really awesome experiment! Replace some of the inert nitrogen with more oxygen. How would a high-oxygen environment (say 30%) affect the brine shrimp over several successive generations?? What morphological changes could be observed? Increased size?? Changes in proportions? ... who knows??? You could simulate various atmospheres - at different periods in Earth history (like the Paleozoic era). That would be very interesting indeed. I'm sure the professors at Utah will all want one...
    How else could one go about devising such an experiment?? Your glass box is unique in this way. Once you set the basic atmospheric perimeters - that's it! It will last seemingly forever. I can't think of an easier way to conduct such a long-term "maintenance-free" experiment. What would happen in 20 years time if the culture is sustained? ...or 50 years?? Can you even imagine? Then crack 'em open and take a look at the biology.
    Anyway thanks for the upload, look forward to seeing more!

      Evolution does not always take millions of years. There are swallow populations for instance that live close to major highways who have slightly shorter wings than their normal counterparts because having shorter wings makes them more maneuverable and enables them to evade cars better.
      There are also rattle snake populations who have lost their ability to rattle since humans would kill them so much and one way to find them was to get them to rattle by pissing them off with noise so you could hear where they are. The ones with deformed rattles would survive more often because they didn't get killed by humans.

    Alright, wacky idea time: After long periods of adaptation to each box, could you start a selective breeding process with adults from each box and see if you can breed a super-shrimp of some sort? I'm talking like, subject one box to "enhanced gravity" via centripetal forces, subject another box to minimal light energy, subject another box to sustained water currents, subject another box to low temperatures, subject another box to high temperatures, etc. Do all of these things until each box's shrimp have adapted to thrive in each condition, THEN begin selective breeding to try to get offspring with multiple adaptations. It would take years, and each condition would probably have to be gradually increased over time until the shrimp are able to survive and thrive in each extreme condition.

    • @Togmot
      @Togmot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The algae don't really eat the sunlight. They just use the energy to convert C02 into carbon and oxygen.
      Sorry for being pedantic. You're right though, without light this couldn't work.

    • @mspeir
      @mspeir 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe some bioluminescent microorganisms?

    • @bigoljoe1829
      @bigoljoe1829 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ..if you're going to go out of your way to be pedantic toward someone who you agree was correct, at least be correct yourself.
      The primary function of photosynthesis is to convert solar energy into chemical energy and then store that chemical energy (sugars) for future use. Chloroplasts combine carbon dioxide and water with sunlight to produce the storage sugars. In the process, the plants produce oxygen and release a small amount of the water they absorbed. The point isnt making o2. o2 is a waste product of the process. The plant does obtain carbon during this process that it uses for other things, but its far from the only or even the main job of photosynthesis.

    • @speye22e
      @speye22e 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mark Speir Still wouldn't work--the 2nd law of thermodynamics means that you need an outside source of energy to sustainably power life. The bioluminescent microorganisms wouldn't put out enough light to power the algae to make enough food to feed the microorganisms. Everything would just slowly die.
