      They get so big anyways that cutting the bottom section really does not take away from the whole hedge

    I have a limelight here in Tx, zone 8a. I have it in a spot that gets sun until about 1pm and then goes into shade for the remainder of our hot brutal days. It requires a lot of water even tho it gets a fair amt of shade or the leaves start getting crispy. There’s no way any panicle hydrangea could be in our full Tx sun, but it is doable if u can give it shade from the brutal afternoon sun here. Ur hydrangea hedge is stunning, and I hope to get another limelight later this yr, but everywhere that I have space for a hedge like urs is in the full sun so it won’t work for me here in my garden. I will always admire urs tho! 🥰😍😍🥰

      Good to know. I am in 8b in the mountains of S. CA. I thought morning sun - till about 2:00 p.m would be better. What do you think? Most people say the heat is too intense here to grow hydrangeas.

    • @loricawley54
      @loricawley54 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pattischolten7303 It’s been my experience that in the hotter, more intense zones, hydrangeas need to be planted where they get morning sun and afternoon shade. I’d still be prepared to run drip to it or water it every day by hand bc mine needs a lot of water here. It’s on drip irrigation being watered by the drip 3x/week, and in between those irrigation days, I hand water. Once we hit our high summer temps between 110-115 (we’re in west Tx which is desert so it’s HOT in the summer), I’ll run the drip every day bc otherwise my limelight wants to get crispy leaf edges if I don’t. Our house faces the west, and our backyard faces east so my limelight is in the backyard which gets shaded by the house by about 1pm. U can try one hydrangea and see how it does for u. That’s what I did bc I wasn’t sure it could survive our brutal climate, but it has survived and has done well provided I give it plenty of water. I plan to get another one this fall since the first one has done well bc I find planting things in the fall fare better bc the weather isn’t as brutally hot then. Hope this helps!

    Dear Roxana, your videos inspired me a couple of years ago. I bought 3 limelights in 1 gallon containers for about $100 total and planted them in spring 2021 in my heavy ohio soil, about 7 feet apart. This year they are already 3-4 feet tall but just weren't growing fast enough. So I'm putting wood privacy fence and transplanting them elsewhere in the yard. While I don't have the patience to wait for them to grow, I've fallen in love with how beautiful they are. And I got a few more on sale last fall. Thanks for your fantastic videos. I find you so relatable and trust your gardening advice.

    I’m so glad you said what you said about starting with smaller containers. I’m planning a hedge and the cost of five hydrangeas in #7 containers is more than I wanted to send. I usually start with smaller plants due to budget, so that really helps.
    I wouldn’t have them in full sun here in Georgia, though I always assume when someone says ‘full sun’ they don’t mean Georgia sun! 😂😂😂 your hedge is just lovely and I can’t wait to do mine.

    I would recommend pruning the lime lights in the fall if you get heavy snow in the winter. I lost a few big limbs one winter where the snow was very heavy and wet and the branches got so weighed down, a few snapped.

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  ปีที่แล้ว

      We do get snow but not in quantities where I would worry about limbs thankfully.

    Beautiful! Do you have any pictures of what you do with the hydrangea when it's dry. I bought 2 paniculata hydrangeas last year and then realized how big they really get. I don't know how I can reuse it to decorate. Thanks

    Excellent information! Thank you. I would love to grow hydrangeas. I live in the mountains of CA - the high desert area. While it snows a bit in the winter, it can be up to 100 in the summer. Would 1/2 a day sun be ok for them? I'm thinking of planting one as a test plant on the east side of my house.

    • @SoilandMargaritas
      @SoilandMargaritas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would think you need to give them a bit of evening sun for sure and plenty of water, but check with somebody local, even in your neighborhood where you spot one.

    Hello! Thanks for this video! Have you ever planted a hydrangea on a slope? Will it grow upwards, upright, after compensating for the slope? Or is it going to droop over down the incline and tip over if I don't assist it and growing upwards? It's not a huge incline. Maybe 35°
