@@banjoboy1337 you may know the banjo brought over from Africa made out of gourds. A strang is a strang ABCDEFG. Roots of southern music primarily Scot Irish Fiddlers and African Banjo. Hymns and spirituals roots of Rock N Roll. People have been banging rocks and sticks together singing in harmony for thousands of years and put the rock in the roll. Otis Taylor I think the name of the black banjo player put out Bringing back the Banjo I think the name was. Worth a listen.
According to "History of Western Music"...violin is what the instrument is called when music being played has virtue and fiddle is what it's called when music being played has vice. So yeah.... church and the tavern
Fiddle is simply the Anglosajón way of calling the violin. There is no major difference, they are the same instrument. If it is true that this term is used more in the traditional music of those countries, such as Scottish, Irish, or old time music.
Well obviously they don't know the difference but there is a subtle difference which I will now explain both the violin and the fiddle are the same instrument however they are totally set up differently meaning the distance between the string and the bridge the shape of the bridge the shape of the fingerboard the distance between the string and the nut and the strings are entirely different. I have made seven so I know a thin g or two. Not from a kit from scratch. It's much easier to convert a violin to a fiddle than it is to convert a fiddle into a violin you can't put wood back on an instrument that has been sanded or carved away that's why set up is everything.
The fiddle or violin are objects. They do not become something else when the are or are not being played. While they are being played they are identical. The difference is in the playing not the object. The fiddle and violin are just different names for the same thing.
The difference isn't the instrument: a fiddle is still a violin. The difference is the style of playing and the bridge. A regular violin is meant for Western Classical music, jazz, and some other cases, but a fiddle is meant for country and folk music where you have a lot more string crossing, more ornaments, some other articulation stuff. Because of that, a violin that's meant for fiddling has a slightly different bridge. Technically the same bridge but the difference is the curvature of the bridge, it's a tad smaller so playing multiple strings is easier. This isn't to say that you can't use a regular violin for fiddle-playing but the bridge isn't really made for it.
Most people say the playing style is the difference between a fiddle and violin but I'd also argue that there are more aspects. For example, I come from Finland and our fiddle music (atleast in the Central Ostrobothnia region) is very much based on the Swedish style of fiddling, which in of itself has alot of baroque ornaments. So some playing techniques may be completely identical to classical violinists but I think the main difference is that ornaments are improvised and personally embellished as the music is usually learned by ear rather than sheet music. So I'd say that fiddling is more about playing more freely and personally, as there is no exact right way to do things.
Old Time Fiddlers used to flatten the bridge. I happened to visit George Washington Carver's museum near Joplin Missouri, Fiddle country!. There was a "violin" there with samples of music Mr. Carver played. I noticed the fiddle had been refurbished, and mentioned that to teh docent. She was impressed, I was the only person to catch that. So she brought out the original pieces that had been replaced....and low and behold there was a flat bridge. Mr. Carver had acquired the instrument from his Uncle....who was a well known fiddler in the area! And western fiddlers put a Rattlesnake rattle in their fiddle....I have one in mine. I learned that from Cliff and old fiddler who taught me.
I just want to hear the whole version and I can't find it. I'm tormented I have a favorite song but I've only heard thirty seconds of it's awesomeness lol.
What's the fiddle / Violin pic -up called ? Maybe i can put in on my Fiddle / Violin or maybe Viola aswell . Check: Kentucky Snake Oil and Joint String Friends 😁 Keep on Fiddle'ing 🎻🎵🎶🎵😎😁
A violin and a fiddle are the same instrument, but they are played in different styles of music. The main difference between the two is the type of music performed on the instrument.
The difference is the bridge the strings rest on at the base. It's usually flatter and a little shorter when the instrument is used for fiddling. Mostly, it's the style of playing, though.
Why is it that a fiddler's instrument always has a large amount of rossin dust left on the surface? I personally like to keep my instrument dust-free. I'm genuinely curious.
The difference between a violin player and a fiddle player? With the fiddle player, it's like lightning. The fingers never strike twice in the same place.
A fiddle is a bowed instrument used in bluegrass/country music but generally it’s a violin. How you play it determines weather it’s a violin or fiddle mainly haha.
There is no physical difference. Physically, they are the exact same four-stringed wooden instrument that dates back to 16th-Century models from northern Italy. The difference is the style of music which is performed by the player. Classical musicians call it a violin, and trad musicians call it a fiddle.
I had a music teacher that taught that a fiddle was just a violin you can spill beer on
More accurate would be spilling whiskey. A couple shots of whiskey turns a violin into a fiddle.
A couple shots of whiskey turns a violin into a fiddle. Simple answer.
LMAO
I heard that the fiddle has strangs and the violin has strings

You full of shit
That's a really good analogy. 😮
Thats the best one ive heard
PERFECT description!
a fiddle is just a violin with ideas of freedom
haha!
Its actually in a quantum superposition in which you don't know actually what instrument it is until after the music starts playing
A violin is carried in a case. A fiddle is carried in a gunny sack.
That's funny!😅
The only differences are the way they’re played, and the way the bridge is set up. Fiddles have flatter bridges so it’s easier to play double stops.
I think it's left to personal preference
@@brysondavis7619 totally personal preference
Definitely personal
Mine has a very different bridge than most others I've seen
A fiddle doesn't know a bridge from a rope.
According to "History of Western Music"...violin is what the instrument is called when music being played has virtue and fiddle is what it's called when music being played has vice.

Well now I have heard definite fiddling in Southern Gospel Music.

They played it like a damn fiddle.

Good explanation
One difference is that you don't spill whiskey on yer violin

I play fiddle in my bluegrass band and violin in the orchestra, but use the same instrument for both.

A fiddle is fun to listen to. 😂
indeed
Ying and Yang. Fiddle is warm Violin in cold. Violin in kinda well behaved, fiddle is wild and untamed

They don’t wipe their rosin off the instrument

This sort of thing always makes me want to ask: Can you play the violin as well??
The difference is the bridge the strings rest on at the base. It's usually flatter and a little shorter when the instrument is used for fiddling. Mostly, it's the style of playing, though.
Yup but the only problem is finding a fiddling bridge without having to go to a luthier to custom make you one

Not so. Read Robert Boldin's comment. He's a luthier.
The difference is genre. Also, Violin has a Better care and more Complicated maintenance
Not true
As a fiddler AND a violinist, they are the same instrument. Fiddlers just have a bad reputation about taking care of their instruments
@@Watermelon_cat-ro6qc yea, i know both is a similar instrument

Fiddling is hitting two strings at once with the bow. That's it. So one can fiddle cellos too.
The differenece between a fiddle performance and a violin performance? Nothing. Except the audience of one claps more after every song.
The way its played makes the difference.
The only difference is the kind of music you play😊
Always please to hear this🎉
A fiddle grew up in the south and a violin grew up in Europe
Same instrument, the difference is the technique with which it is played
Strings on violin and strangs on the fiddle
I was always told if you play it sitting down it's a violin, and if you're standing it's a fiddle
