This side of Galle is outside of the fort area so you see many local Sri Lankan people and less tourists on this side of Galle. Differences between Sri Lanka and India: Cleaner, quieter, no horns, no cows in the street. I did notice that the storefronts are all run by men. You didn't see women in the tourist center.
Yes in Sri lanka generally women take on the more traditional roles of a house wife and attend to cooking and cleaning, therefore they make up a surprisingly small percentage of total workforce. But that is changing these days with more girls continuing their higher education and pursuing careers, and more women starting up their up their own businesses especially in the big cities.
@@damianxavier7343 It is interesting that, if you cross the border into Burma (Myanmar), this changes... you see women running restaurants and such. Nepal, probably Tibet as well.
Buying the milk is a well known scam. They are asking to buy some kind of expensive milk. Do not fall for that again.

I think he’s married to Sinhalese women. Those women didn’t look like they were Muslims or he works at the shop or he’s visiting/helping out a friend’s shop.

The man who asked for the milk seems to be a liar. Even genuinely poor people don't ask for such things in Sri Lanka. Those people are tourist scammers who are waiting to take an opportunity out of the generosity of kind tourists.

You seem confused at the start of the video about what is a fort. By definition it should be an enclosed area & Galle fort has schools , places of worship , offices etc. all attended to by locals. No one is barred from going in.
As for your question of the bad side of tourism, you got the perfect example with Mahinda. Tourism has created many "Mahindas" who have found an easy way of making money. $12 you paid for the Sustagen , which your friend would sell , probably back to the same shop.
Finally some explain this thing to this guy😅 he was looking for a answer what he wanted to hear. As a person who living galle i can confirmed 99% of people only think about the positive side of tourism and most of people here love to share each others cultures and no one worry about it too much. And normally upper class, upper middle class and middle class people love to living little bit away from the main city. So the side he focused as local life doesn't do the justice for real local life in galle. To be honest it's really calm

That shop owner also must be aware of it that is why he gave priority to you than the other costumers when paying the bill of that Sustagene. Don't trust everyone who approaches you so quickly . The guy you bought the milk for, for his mother. There is a scam in india where a tourist is asked to buy powdered milk or formula. Usually for their newborn baby that they can't afford to feed. A story which will tug at anybody's heart strings. They don't have a baby and later they take the milk back to the shop for a refund.
I'd like to think the man you bought for was genuine, but his story was odd. Special milk for an 83 year old sounds a bit dubious.

My friend you have to learn alot of things about South Asia. Be street smart. I've seen many youtubers fall for this trap. The man would buy that milk powder and return it to the same store and make some money. The store owners are also part of this fraud. The old man knows tourists are vulnerable. 55 years, he is doing this. Be smart, man. Next time, buy the milk, go to his house, and see if his mother is really there.
