Waggoner Ranch: Iconic Chunk of Texas for Sale at $725 Million

  • The Waggoner Ranch in north Texas is slightly smaller than Rhode Island and is the largest ranch in the U.S. within a single fence. Everything about it is Texas-scale: the colorful history, the sprawl, the oil that lies beneath it, and the feud among the heirs that is forcing a court-ordered sale. This old-fashioned working ranch comes with 6,800 cattle, 500 quarter horses, more than 1,000 producing oil wells, nearly 30,000 acres of farmland and more than 150 years of history. The price tag: $725 Million. (Video by: Jeniece Pettitt, Ryo Ikegami) (Source: Bloomberg)

I live in north Tx, and went to school with guys who worked on the Waggoner Ranch, I hate to see it sell because it is an iconic part of TX, I cant imagine someone who can pay that much money for a ranch that would have respect for the life style and what ranches like the Waggoner meant for the development of America.

To her, the ranch wasn't about the oil. Family disputes can ruin your heritage. What _typically_ happens is a few families no longer want anything to do with the ranch (either they live elsewhere or are in financial problems) and want to sell "their share," but the inheritance clause/contract stipulates it has to remain in the family or be sold all together. The family members who want to sell probably make five or low six figures a year and figure this will make them rich quickly. They can't sell "their share" to other family members, because they don't have that liquid cash on hand.
When the majority rules without respect to the minority, this is what happens.

Such a shame when family argues over land. My great grandfather left land to his kids and to this day the grandkids (my aunts and uncles and their cousins) are arguing over what to do with the land. It has caused a rift in the family that shouldn't have been.
This ranch has so much history and I can't see it staying a ranch unless a conservancy buys it and tries to maintain some of the old west.

You mean your great-great-great Grandfather came out and took (stole) the land from the entire native Indian population that existed there for thousands of years before your grandfather, and you all get rich. Don't want to talk about that.

acourtneyification get over it. If you are so concerned about stuff like that go back to where your family originated 3000 years ago. Ever country in the world has been taken over by someone else at some point. Even your precious American Indians invaded and stole land occupied by other American Indian Nations. Stop looking backwards in time live for now and tomorrow.

im sorry but you act like america was under control by one group of people... hundreds of different indians tribes savagely killed each other over land all the time. there was no organization that controlled land. indian tribes have been fighting for land control for thousands of years.. we just came and did it better and won. get over it

Long interesting story. There were two heirs from two branches of the family and it was in a trust. Neither side could afford to buy the other out and they couldn't decide whether to sell it off in bits or divide it down the middle. A judge ordered it to be sold.
