    Always clean out the voice coil gap before installing the replacement kit. This is very important since any part of the old coil left behind or any flaking of the magnet coating could damage or shorten the life of the new recone kit. Doulbe sided tape or tape folded so that the sticky side is out on both sides should be sliped in the maganet gap and then drug around the gap. Do this with how ever many pieces of tape needed until the tape comes out clean. Blowing the gap out will not clean it .

    I never had the guts to attempt this...had a pair of Yamaha S4115H speakers and one needed a recone real badly but the working unit sounded incredible. More power I could ever want.

    I don't care what everyone else says, your methods worked & the end result shows it. 'Nuff said!

    I always just use an angle grinder with a thin wire wheel to grind away anything resembling a remnant of the spider or surround or glue. Makes QUICK work of any speaker frame, and this way you have clean bare metal for the spider glue and surround glue to adhere to.

    I always wondered about why the surround was shiney on the commercial paper cones.

    I think you've left out the most important part... Cleaning the voice coil gap making sure you've got nothing to foul your new coil. You must do this. Also I'd not turn the driver while in the gap. This could cause the voice coil do damage and possibly create a short. Also once you've glued the surround and gaskets down, turn the complete driver upside down to let dry so the weight of the unit can pin the glue together. Also ver important.... Wash your hands! Happy Reconing!

    It centres the speaker so that it doesn't rub.
    If the speaker isn't centred when you glue it, it might be slightly out and it'll rub against the magnet. It has to be perfectly centre.
    If the kit doesn't come with it, you could just use card or anything else that will slide down there tight!

    I have so many questions... Was that the original cone on those speakers, and
    about how old/how much use had they seen? Also, what is the typical
    lifespan of them? Am I correct in assuming they don't use a foam
    surround because it can be a weak point of speakers which get driven as
    hard as those?
    This reminded me of the time I almost bought a pair of original Bose 901's on stands from a thrift shop for like $75, then noticed all the foam surrounds had completely deteriorated. There was no way I was gonna try to repair 16 4-1/2" speakers by myself, and the only speaker shop I know of won't do anything smaller than 5". I'm still kicking myself for passing on those, after seeing a few how-to's on it now.

    reconing is that much cheaper that it actually worth the energy and time put into the process? And if that is the case how could it be that much cheaper if you get every part of the speaker excluding only the frame and the magnet?

  • @madjimms
    @madjimms 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don't understand, can't you just use heat to remove the entire cone without cutting it? Then you could just remove the voice coil and keep the cone.

  • @tmmtmm

    actually that's a common misconception. A more powerful amp will blow speakers more easily, period. A 500wrms amp driven into clipping probably makes like 750wrms, which is no harder on the driver than a 750wrms amp playing cleanly. Just use an amp that has the same rating as the speakers and don't clip it!

    You have to remove all of the old spider, not just glue over it. JBL recone protocol is to clean the gap to clean out all the bits of old VC, and check the gap with a gauge. You can't buy OEM recone kits from JBL unless you've been through their certification class.

    • @MisterTalkingMachine
      @MisterTalkingMachine 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +oldbob1951 I would have never guessed such a thing as a protocol for fixing busted speakers existed.
      I am curious on how to clean the gap, since I usually come across speakers that are rubbing pretty badly on the dust, or the coil is downright stuck inside and doesn't move a bit.
      Sometimes whatever crap gets in there is ferromagnetic, and the magnet holds it in. There was one rubbing Wigo from around '55 that was full of metal filings. I tried many methods, but the only one I found that worked well was using sticky tape, slide a piece into the gap and move it around, repeat several times. Got the Wigo working flawlessly.

  • @Trpmanne

    Tell me what it means by clipping??? does that sound like clicking sounds from the subwoofer??? only had this happen a couple of time but mainly due to uneducated connections. My 2240H playing at a full 600w of amplified power bridged 8-16ohms. No problems whatsoever....so Clipping just to clarify?

    Hold up, bro...you just glued to the old ratty spider. Not impressive. You say the glue is 'hard core'....does that mean you got it at an adult shop ? LOL.... anyway, I'm hoping that speaker still works, cause your recone experience was a bit 'iffy'.

  • @dwkimmons
    @dwkimmons 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dude, YOU should NOT be reconing speakers!!! Your lack of cleaning the spider web off completely has rendered the voice coil out of dead center calibration creating a weak forward throw bias. That speaker will NEVER stand up to its rated power now.
