Have a single portal, central in your base/village that leads to a portal room further away from base.
In that portal room you have portals to everywhere lining the walls, and you cram it full of comfort items and keep a box of decent food.
Portal in, get rested buff while you eat your food, then head off on your adventure.

@@valguy4u I got that - but when you are living with multiple people you kinda end up needing more by nessecity. But this method still does keep it cleaner - we were able to keep it to 4 portals in our "hub" between 3 of us (which still sucked cause we ended up needing to dedicate a room to it...) But it was better than the 15 odd locations we had portals to haha

Great video! I switched from many portals to 2-3 portals as well. Some things I do, I have a portal board with all my portal names written out so I don't forget what I called them. I also create an alt who stays in my base full time. That way if I accidentally go through a portal that hasn't "switched over" yet, I can log over and rename it easily.

One that you edit the tag to where you wanna go.
And just drop a pin on the map with the tag ID.
Need set a new portal tag here's how:
Goto location and build portal shack,
Then set to Static Home tag
Change variable portal tag as desired.

Even quicker: when needing to set a portal to "Home" , let it light up, then change it back to "8" or whatever you intended then go through immediately, bringing you home, but changing the portal back in one go. Saves two of your steps. Edit: this way your "home" portal is already unlinked when you get back, and you never accidentally keep your "home" portal linked to anything.

Not bad. I eventally settled on a system of sequential portals, traversing my bases in order - meadows connects to forest, which also connect to swamp, et cetera, with branches off for other things located in the closest base. Dealing with the hassle of portals is why I eventually installed a mod that allows you to go from any portal to any other portal, so I only need one portal in each location.

  • @asteranx
    @asteranx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

A refinement to this would be to have two portals at each location. One 'outgoing' and one 'incoming'. The incoming portal is named and never changes. You leave the outgoing portal name blank.
To use it you change the name of the outgoing portal to the place you want to go and let it connect like in the video. Then - and this is key - clear the name immediately before you step through. As shown, the actual connection won't change immediately but rather will disconnect shortly after you arrive, so it'll effectively send you on a one way trip. You want this because you don't want to leave anything connected to the incoming portal at your destination as that would prevent incoming connections from other locations. To return, repeat the process. Rename your outgoing portal to the incoming portal at your home location, wait for a connection, clear it and step through.
There are several advantages: First you can travel from any location to any other location as you like. No need to return home or to a hub of some kind. Second it is less error prone. Since the outgoing portal is normally blank you probably can't accidently step through 'early' and end up somewhere you didn't mean to go. The only part you can mess up is forgetting to clear the outgoing name as you leave, and if you do that then you're left with an open portal back to your origin that you can use to try again. Lastly it's better for multiplayer since every time you use any portal the whole system reverts to its base state of one named and one unnamed portal at each location.
If you're resource starved you could theoretically do this with a single portal at each location and just change its name back to the incoming name instead of blank before stepping through, but you have to be careful not to introduce any typos, as that might prevent you from reconnecting to that location.

The big advantage of your system is that you need half the grinding for finewood (I usually have plenty of cores and greydwarf eyes), saving on space is a close second.
I've gone a while with just one portal at the home base, but your second pre-named spare nicely eliminates the risk of getting stuck (if you go in too quickly after a name change - and end up at a dead portal).
The only disadvantage is you need to take some effort to rename the far end after each emergency to keep a "Home" free for the next emergency, and you need to remember what you named your portals, but those seem small compared to needing only half the materials and using only, maybe, 1/10th the space compared with if all the portals were in dedicated pairs.
In practice, now, I keep ~3 dedicated pairs (I use so much that it would be too much trouble to constantly rename them), and then I use one to connect to any of the 12 others as you show here.

    • @valguy4u
      @valguy4u  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

A lot of people keep the "home" portal I use as an emergency portal, but they don't name it.

This is great for solo/single player worlds, it gets a little hectic with Multiplayer though as you either have people trying to connect to a portal network and not being able to or people needing to wait to use their portals. I like what some others have said, and what I've done once or twice, in making a hub for your portals away from or buried in your base. It's clean and still lets multiple people use multiple portals without congestion.

    • @valguy4u

Whoever makes the portal names the portal with the 1st letter of their name. So my portals (Valguy) would be V1, V2, V3 and so on. Yours would be A1, A2, A3. Use the cartography table every couple of days and boom, problem solved.

Another tip might be, if you have the long boat, just leave the mats to make at least one portal in it's storage. I don't know how many times I've decided to go exploring, get way far away from base, then figure out I forgot the portal mats. So frustrating. In fact, this is a strat I just thought up, so I'm going to do this next time I log in. XD

Another thing is to not forget at least 10 wood for the workbench. I once thought I was well set with 20 fine wood, 10 greydwarf eyes, and 2 surtling cores. But if you go to a new biome and you forgot the 10 wood, you need to cut some local trees, agro mobs that can kill you, then die in a very unfortunate place.
While 10 wood would have saved you so much BS.

I do a kind of hybrid of this. I like building "portal hubs" near spawn which will have like 15-20 portals, these cover locations near all bosses, a portal link to each of our bases (there are 3 or 4 of us who play together on the server) and then some other random locations. The hub usually also gets repair benches, comfort items, and dump chests so people can clear their inventories quickly and head back out.
But then also if I want multiple portals on the same continent I will set them to all have varied numbers and a single portal at the hub can be used to connect to all of them (with signs of their names above it). Then to finish off I also always keep an "emergency" portal in my base for the times where I'm out raiding or whatever and decide I'd like to have a temporary portal (Infested Mine runs for example) or another portal doesn't change it's connection quick enough and I would otherwise get stuck.

After playing this game hundreds of hours I finally came to this realization and do a system exactly like yours. One thing I do as well is set up my comfort area right around this singular portal and a set of "drop boxes". This allows me to come through my portal and quickly clear my inventory while gaining a comfort buff at the same time. I set up a permanent/sorted storage close enough to go to while encumbered for when I finally feel like cleaning up the drop boxes. It's also nice to have repair station relatively close. I also keep a box of boat materials and a box of portal materials right near this singular portal for when I need to quickly make or store a boat and expand to a new portal #. My "home" portal is usually located in some out of the way location since it is only used in a rare emergency.

Very good explanation, I do this as well. I also clear the active portal with a name that doesn't exist, wait for the portal to shutdown, then type in destination- no risk of transporter "uhoh". It's still good to have a "home" portal when explorations start from another portal or you want to half travel time when moving/unloading ore. In mistlands a decent spot to place portals is in the skulls that you find soft tissue in- seem to be unbreakable by anything except the dark metal pick (Gjall spit, seeker attacks don't cause damage to the skull) and it's pretty easy to set up an entry that breaks line of sight.

Another option, starting with maybe core wood. Though stone looks better.
Meadows biome: Leave space for portals until you need them, then place them when you need them.
Compass Portal hub: Four portals in the center: Home, Hub 1, Hub 2, Hub 3. (Hub 1-3 are backup portals incase one you forget to unclog one.)
First row: Five portals north, stairs, five portals east, stairs, five portals south, stairs, five portals west, stairs.
Stairs lead up to a second row.
Second row: Six portals north, stairs, six portals east, stairs, six portals south, stairs, six portals west, stairs.
Stairs lead up to a third row. However, you can either swap one portal or one set of stairs as a downward stairs. This frees up more room to build portals for rarely visited places by building underneath the second and third rows.
Third row: seven portals north, stairs, seven portals east, stairs, seven portals south, stairs, seven portals west, stairs.
Build a dirt wall for defense. Maybe add a moat on the outside of the moat to be extra-safe. (Especially on sides near a hill going up, but ideally the spot would be fairly level; though I know that isn't always an option)
If at any point you need to have more than 55 portals (Plus the less-used under-portals and emergency 1-3 Hub portals), build a fourth row using the stairs by building up from the existing dirt wall. Then build a new dirt wall for defense. (Or build the dirt wall first after measuring how much room the fourth row will require. If you're paranoid, like me.)
You would theoretically be expanding the portal hub once at most.
Don't forget to decorate your portal hub so it looks nice. :)

I do something like this, but I use them slightly differently.
If I'm at portal 8, I'll change it to "home" and step back to let it connect. I then change it back to "8" and step right through. It won't have reconnected yet, so I'll end up at "home". However the portal I stepped through will now be called 8 again, ready I be used as before. Stops you from having to jump back and forth a few times, but you've got to have faith.
If you get stuck, you can also log in with a different character, change the name and switch back.

Personally I use a portalroom at home for locations I frequently visit, then I have one 'mining' portal which functions basically like your home portal. Only I use it for slapping down a connection when mining a skull in the mistlands, or before that to have a quick way back to the mining area from a port (from the silvervain to the nearest port, so i have an instant way back to the vein for moving the metal 'quickly').
So yeah, having one extraportal usable with retagging is very nice. But for places I frequently use, I really prefer a permanent portal and I try not to build too many actual bases. Built one temporary small shack near the spawn, built a temporary base at a black forest coast (really should have picked the meadows instead with distance to the black forest, so much more calm) and lastly one permanent base in the plains. I have 10 permanent portals and the mining portal, but I think I could cut down a bit on the portals near bosslocations as I do not visit them regularly enough.

I use two way portals for each special location or base and always have some spare portals for travelling. So in my main base I usually have travel1, travel2, travel3 etc. and I try to store materials for portals in every ship I have. But recently I started a new world and totally gave up on creating bases everywhere. I just use one big central-hub with a portal building for "travel portals" and for some basic location for eg. trader. In my other world I have too many bases: a huge "town" (the main base) in the black forest with big harbor, a smaller harbor with a forge near the spawn point, an enormous castle in the mountain side a lox farm base, two smaller swamp bases (one have a quite nice harbor) and an another big castle on a hillier part of the meadows.

I still remember the double world portal hack. Made transferring ore less of a time consuming event.
Just start a new world with some basic set up (house, chest, bed) and any time your portal won't let you travel due to items, you just load up your character inventory with what you want and log out. Load in your other world, dump all the items into a chest and then log out again and go back to your main world. You then travel home or wherever the portal you want to use and once there, log out again and go grab your items form the other world you couldn't portal with. It's a hassle but definitely faster than sailing in most cases.

I use a three tier system. One portal room for the main locations (farm, haldor, spawn, bioms) and if I need more than that, I build another base with a new portal room in one of the locations (second tier). For example, I've got all of my "farm portals" in my main farm. That includes Greydwarf, Draugr, Lox and Wolf farms etc. It takes more time because you need to portal twice, but usually you'd only go to these locations once in a while. The third tier is what you do: Just two portals. One home portal and one rotating portal for all the locations I'm currently exploring.

Build one portal that leads to a separate portal structure containing all portals to a direction. Have 4 stone houses set apart surrounded outside by hoe walls. Then just put 4 cardinal portals in you main base. I then put a pin with the portal name on my map incase I forget were they go. It works. I also have an untagged portal, and one named home for the situation you talked about.
However, if you only plan on going to one area at a time its easy to have one home portal. You pin and name your satellite portals in the field, and just rename the single portal at home before you leave. You then leave an untagged portal at home and use it to return, rename home, go back and retrieve your untagged portal.

The developers really should add a dialing device, and the Futhark runes could be used as glyphs for an addressing system; but this is a good (albeit somewhat risky) workaround strategy.
If I was going to do this, I'd probably still have several dedicated home/destination portals, probably at a rate of one per continent. That way, if I made a mistake and I got trapped as you describe here, I could at least type in an address for the portal on the same continent. That might still mean a long run back, but it wouldn't be as catastrophic as requiring sailing, especially if I got trapped in a Plains or somewhere I couldn't farm the necessary mats to actually build a boat.

To get back home you could have renamed your portal 8 back to 8 and go through the portal while its changing connection, so you would not have to go back to rename it.
My current system is having an unnamed to drop while exploring, then 2-3 to reconnect as needed. And my naming is something like "HI1" where HI stands for "Harbour Isle" and a number for the isle number. Or "B1" for Base 1. In older Saves i had always an isle prefix like "I1" and a suffix to remember like "I1-B1" (Isle 1 Base 1) or "I1-S" (Isle 1 Swamp)
With only numbers like yours i would always have to remember or lookup where it was, especially if i take a break and come back after weeks :D
If i would be forced to use numbers i would have created a number coding for portals like [01-99] for isle number [01-99] for type (01=Home,... 10=Copper deposit,... for example) and [01-99] for portal/type count. So i would get:
010101 = First portal on the main isle home base
011005 = 5. portal on the main isle that leads to a copper deposit.
Good that we are not forced to use numbers :D

I use a very similar system.
I put the primary portal in the middle of my storage area so when I come back encumbered I can just dump everything where it needs to go.
The second portal I leave unnamed. That way it will instantly match with any pocket portal I place down. Or I can just clear the portal name instead of renaming it.
I often have a third portal in a building nearby called "backup" which is the emergency portal if I have screwed up a couple of different things in a row.
Portal names I do the same as you and write them on the map. But I use names rather than numbers because it is easier for me to remember. All lower case no spaces so they are easy to type. 'farwest' 'swamp' 'cosynook' 'farm' etc.

That's an interesting idea considering the fact I like to build small. To help prevent messing yourself up when changing the name, would it help to de-construct the portal at home you want to change to a different location THEN change the name, so you make sure there's a delinking and a relinking to the other? I know that sounds a little tedious, but changing the number portal to the right number then running back to the home portal to change the number to it sounds a little tedious too, but I do agree, always keep the home portal.

  • @arlo1961
    @arlo1961 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yep, good system. I use essentially the same base system except that I name my portals real names like "TRADER" and "ELDER" which I mark on the map. At my home base I have a permanently named portal like your "home" portal that's also always unlinked. I use the blank name portal as my "pocket portal", bit faster cause it links up right when you build it. It's unnecessary, but I always have a third portal off in a dusty corner named "1", which I rename to, usually, "STONES" for switching boss powers, or visiting the trader and what not. I always rename/unlink it back to "1" just as a precaution.
Also worth noting that when I play with a friend of mine this system is a bit less functional if they log off some place and leave the blank portal linked. So I add a couple more portals with my name and their name which functions in place of the blank portal.
I've also found it useful recently to drop a portal at my longship when exploring new places and naming it "LS", and then exploring with another portal. This way if I die with the portal on me I always have one back at my ship. On land I'll carry a cart from place to place, filling up with the non-transportables, then portal back to the LS and sail back the the cart.
Random bonus tip: Build your swamp base within spawn range of a surtling pire that you've hoe'd down to water. It kills them when they spawn, but when you sleep the trap goes off 10 or so times so there's a huge pile of coal and cores waiting for me in the morning. I always smelt at the crypts too, so very productive sleep.
Random bonus bonus tip: Keep a stoncutter and forge in your longship when exploring the mistlands. The stonecutter lets you demo that marble structures and the forge lets you tear down the iron bar reenforcements for the bridges. Lots of marble, lots of iron.

We used to be able to rename and run through quickly as you show here - I found that to be a FEATURE not a bug! This allows you to do a one-time dial.. You can dial a gate and rename it only to slip through before it takes effect. This has since been patched away. Im working on figuring out how to mod the portal mechanics to revert it back.
If i am renaming an active portal, I through in a FALSE name first to trigger a disconnect, then I input the destination dial, then upon connection I rename it back to the map-listed name and hop through before the connection drops once again.
This is hard to explain in words, but it results in even *less* portal usage than cited here.
Basically the TL;DR is that you can "close the door behind you" and not have to keep portals active all the time. This allows far less portal usage since you can use ANY portal to reach ANY portal. This is the behavior that has been patched out... and that which I am going to mod back in ;)

My rules are no caps, and just type the name until it stops accepting characters. The portals "Forward O" and "forward o" are not going to link, btw. My reserve portal is always "911". i mainly do this exact thing, yet i name all my landmasses and then do NSEW so if i go to 'Reynir-Land' then at that base there is 4 portals to NSEW on that landmass. so main castle has portals to all the other landmasses and then i can travel throughout that land and also back home. to avoid getting lost and waiting for portal to reset i just name it something i know doesnt exist and wait for it to unconnect first then i rename it again

@ValGuy the thing is that portals are just cheap and easy to make late game. I actually used your strategy at the start simply because I lacked surtling cores.
I would actually change tags all the time, and break up portals to make them elsewhere. No I don't bother with that. I have too much greydwarf eyes already, surtling cores can be farmed and finewood isn't a challenge to get either. So I might as well make a large portal hub, mostly with 2 variable portals and the rest fixed.

I do the same thing except I have 3 at my base. That way I don't have to switch as often since I have an extra.
Instead of numbers, I have a text document that I call my "phone book" with all my portal names. Less trial and error trying to remember the numbers. Also, I have a fourth portal to the boss power stones that never changes.

I understand why people put a lot of portals down. It is technically easier to travel. Also I don't think a lot of players, especially newer players, even consider changing the portal names as an option. Especially when the norm is to set it and forget it.

Cool vid :) I'm thinking of doing the same but instead of having a portal named home though, I would just leave it unnamed.

@@valguy4u I use it for general exploring as well, just pop it down somewhere safe and go on an adventure :) If i decide it's actually a good spot for a portal i will do the name juggle and jump through. I prefer a portal hub, and themed portals. My farm hub, for example, has a portal to a little flax farm and a much larger barley farm in a different plains biome. My boss hub has all the bosses we've killed accessible. Then the community hub has portals to all the players' bases. I prefer doing it this way because if I tried to do it your way, I'm almost positive that eventually I would run into a situation where another player is trying to get to the portal I'm trying to go to and one of us would have to change a portal name.
If I ever played a solo map maybe I would do this though. Would save some time going into crypts or killing surtlings.

  • @michaelmorrow9927
    @michaelmorrow9927 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Simpler solution if you play solo and are always on the move.. 5 bosses total 10 portals plus the bossStones = 12.. have one at main base called Temp and a pocket temp.. Use temp always. keep all portals in a chest until needed dropping one at each location after you have found them. total in game portals = 14 only 12 active all times once end game is reached. Use the temp for all resources except for the obvious ore which you make a 4x4 cabin that can contain all you need up to a 20 min buff. when done break it all down put loot on a boat or in a cart depending on distance and on your way. another solution is seed hopping no portals

I keep portals from one land at that land on land-main-base. So you can travel through main-main-base portal to the land-main-base and then to other regions of that land. Also I keep names intead of numbers. But after watching your system I realize how to rename portals if I disliked their previous name. I'll just use 2 portals with old and new name on the any main-base and rename sub-portal.

@@valguy4u Not sure it has that name to anyone but me, but that's how I think of it especially considering the portals are surrounded by runes lol! I typically play portal-less but over the holiday break I was seeing what portal life was like and learned the hard way about not keeping an open channel to dial home with! On the flip side, the phenomenon of portals not changing their endpoint instantly means you can rename portals easily! Simply dial the old name, then change to the new name and step through. If you make it through you just set the other end to the new name and hop back. Naturally keep that open line home because I've accidentally renamed the portal to "w" as I was stepping through without realizing it! I also had a 3rd portal set up if there is somewhere I frequent like the trader.

What we do is only have 2 portals in home base we have a portal named for the base always for emergency purposes incases like getting stranded on an island or somebody dies and cant portal back and the other portal is the one that we always change to wherever we need to portal. That way we dont have to dedicate an insanely large amount of space for portals
