Nobody told him to straighten his feet. Bank his body. Clench his fists. It was all natural. And still 40 years on after numerous hero incarnations he is still the one that makes us believe. Thank you Chris
Christopher Reeve was a pilot so he knew that banking his body would make it far more realistic that simple staying flat. A fantastic Superman and a great actor.
I heard that was a nod to George Reeves, who was Superman in the 1950s. George would sometimes look into the camera and give a little wink to the audience. That was cool of Chris to do something similar at the end of each of the four films he did. He had watched George when he was growing up, btw. But at the time, I bet he never dreamed that one day he would put on the iconic skinsuit, cape, and boots and end up flying into history as the greatest Superman there ever was or will be.
i often dream that is easy to fly but always ( in the dreams) at the end of the flight or when i have to stop flying it turns out difficult to reach the place where i want to land
Look at all the little touches Reeve brought to the flying scenes. When Superman takes off or when he's flying fast, his fists are closed, like he's using extra power. When he's not in a hurry or just carrying someone slowly, his hands are open, just gliding. Also, the position of the arms, using them to bank and turn, one forward, one back, and the way he leans his body when landing. Amazing stuff.
And just before he lands, he always lowers one foot with his toes pointed to make for a softer landing. Especially important if he's carrying someone he cares for, like Lois.
Yeah, unlike Cavill's. His Superman shoots into the sky like a rocket and most of the time lands like a boulder. The way Chris's Superman took off and landed was pure poetry.
I love Henry Cavill as Superman, but in my heart..Christopher Reeve is and always really be Superman. Christopher flew planes and because of this, he could make the flying sequences so realistic.
Same here my friend. I love Cavill as well. Mainly because he proved to be Reeve’s greatest successor. And he deserved better. But Reeve will always hold a special place in my heart. He will always be my Superman. Having grown up with his films (particularly the original and Superman II), Reeve has always been the Superman I always associate with as the real man of steel. And what made him so special is the fact that he wasn’t just Superman on screen, he was Superman in real life as well. And for that reason, Christopher Reeve will always be the definitive Superman for me.
I'm 54 and remember seeing the first Superman at the theatre and was in awe when he took flight, no wires were visible and it looked so real. Christopher Reeve was so graceful, made it look believable.
The prison yard take off from the first film is just insane in its grace and effortlessness. And that Evil Superman takeoff from III (after the bar) is just nuts. It's so good.

What is so freaking cool about how they made it look like Chris was actually flying was one, because Chris could effortlessly hold his body aerodynamically due to his experience with hang gliding and two, they did it back when there was no such thing as CGI!
I wished the Superman movies these days had these type of flying scenes. Christopher Reeve looked so graceful and so smooth it’s awesome. We need more practical scenes like this for example Christopher’s take off is wow.
@@CaramelloGuy Thanks. Zack Snyder said in an interview quote." In Chris Reeve's films it was made to make you feel you were flying with Superman. And the close up even the cape is cgi...millions wasted when even the cape is cgi. Reeve's cape still looks the best
MRLASTSONOFKRYPTON MRLASTSONOFKRYPTON yes that’s what I’ve been saying to people for years. CGI is great and all but you should on use it to fix little mistakes or use it for things you can’t do with practical effects. They use CGI for the most useless things like a cape. But I agree with you man. Btw did you see Brandon’s suit and performance in crisis on infinite earths?
Beautiful video! Well edited.Of all the actors to play Superman, Christopher "flew" the best. He really knew how to work the wires and the blue screen to look like he was really up there. I think today they use so many CG double that you lose much of the actor in it. He really was the best.
In the shooting rehersals of Superman 1978, the stunt doubles were not able to "fly" naturally, so Chris Reeve did all the stunt work in the movies. The way he takes off and lands look so perfect, gracefull and real that I truly believe in 2021 that he could fly. Thank you!!
He flew just like a plane would! Notice how during his landings where he came in at an angle he would let his legs down gracefully and then touchdown. Magnificent! I think the flying at 1:35 looks absolutely real. It’s just too perfect. If someone told me that during this scene that CR actually flew. I’d say, “okay, I knew it!” Long live CR!
It's a fun fact that the movies imply something, that has been confirmed by the comics almost 20 years later: A kryptonian's body emanates heat/warmth while in flight (using the solar energy stored in the cells of the body). Lois wasn't cold when she flew with Superman over Metropolis ("He even told her, that she won't need a coat or jacket") or to the north pole. Even Lex Luthor didn't freeze to death when he flew to the Fortress of Solitude on Ursa's back...
I think I've already commented on this one but watching it again today-Well done! The flyers today take off and hit the ground hard and fast. And when they do, they're usually cg doubles. Chris Reeve really knew how to "fly". He really worked it well with those take off and landings and when he was in mid air you could almost believe that there were no wires holding him up.
That's because Chris had a little secret that today's Superman fans might not know: He could effortlessly hold his body aerodynamically due to his experience with hang gliding. I didn't know that about him until I looked him up on Wikipedia. And his always-flawless performances were due to his years of acting in stage plays, where you don't have a lot of room to screw up. If someone missses a cue or flubs his or her lines or sumn, there is no director there to yell "Cut!"
That was very generous to include shots from the sequels for this tribute but every memorable flying moment came from the first film. The other three don't even come close.
When ever he flys off or lands, it’s always so calm and chill and his speed he flys is like a child on a tricycle while Zach Snyder got him going Mach 1 around a large city
I remember wishing I was the kid @ :45 when I was little. Christopher Reeve looked so comfortable in the air, never a hint of rigidity or fear of anything going wrong. But if you were Superman pretending to be Christopher Reeve what else would you know?
Wire rigs. Christopher Reeve had been a glider pilot, so he could could make his "flying" scenes look very aerodynamic and smooth almost without trying. Definitely the most graceful Superman. It was physically demanding though. Being suspended from wires for one or two hours at a time and laying prone like that with nothing underneath you, and having to keep your arms raised for some shots (that can sometimes take hours to set up by the way) can be very demanding on a human body. It's one of the many many reasons playing a superhero can be extremely exhausting.
