Being illiterate did not help. Maybe he just couldn't understand what he was getting involved with.

Sounds like he was guilty of accepting the money but his conscience led him to play well. He appears to be a reluctant accomplice. Reluctant or not, he appears guilty. It hurts, but I think Landis did the right thing.

Back then they were permanently out of baseball
In today's world you cheat, and cheat...win the ws, then bench coach becomes Manager

A sad and tragic figure. Further he is always described as a nice guy and good teammate.
Nevertheless, ignorance is never a valid excuse for committing a crime.
Personally, I think he accepted his punishment without too much pushback.
He was in on the fix…. You know you can’t be just a little bit pregnant !

Jackosn did accept money to throw the 1919 World Series, and this is absolutely documented.

Yes, in his 1914 civil trial they produced bank records proving his wife deposited the $5,000 he received to throw the series.

@@jefflewis4 As I am sure you know, there are many who dispute his involvement, and cite his batting average, but in the games that were fixed, he did not hit well, and his defensive play was said to be suspect.
