Excellent, informative review of the first Hall of Fame class. On the downside, the BBWAA gets mixed reviews: When Mathewson receives 90.7% compared to Grover Cleveland Alexander's 24.3% (despite each having won 373 games and Alex with inferior teams), one must wonder what the voters were thinking?
There are a lot of possible reasons. One is Mathewson's 1905 World Series performance. Another is Alexander suffered shell shock as a result of the war. He had seizures that some people interpreted as drunkenness which was unfair. Alexander of course had his World Series heroics, too. He came in relief in Game 7 of the 1926 series, bases loaded, and preserved the win for the Cardinals. Both players were incredible legends. I will be making a video of Alexander soon.
There are also reporters who don't believe in unanimous selection and won't vote for someone because of that. Mariano Rivera is the only unanimous inductee, so hopefully that school of thought has been weeded out.
Ty Cobb played the game like his hair was on fire. He was America's first sport superstar, and he's probably the most tenacious player that has ever played American sports. The Georgia Peach once had his tonsils removed with no drugs for pain, and then he PLAYED A GAME the same day! Cobb = Legend
@todd4317 Oh, well then.....We could all get our tonsils out without pain meds, and go play a doubleheader.......As long as it was only an exhibition game!! ROFLMFAO......pure moron.....
Quite a group, but you have to wonder which writers kept Ruth and Cobb from being unanimous selections? Hank Aaron wondered the same thing when he came up short, musing about which nine writer's thought he didn't deserve to be in the HOF. And while he was a great reliever, there is no way Rivera should have been the first to achieve that distinction. Sorry. Just like there is no way Bill Mazeroski or Phil Rizzuto deserve to be in the Hall at all while a player like Lou Whitaker gets passed over year-after-year, but I digress. I get annoyed when all of the "modern-day" experts pick Miguel Cabrera as the greatest Tiger hitter of all-time. I've seen knuckleheads who didn't have Cobb in the top-five of all-time Tiger hitters. A lot of that is because of the hatchet job that no-account washed up drunk New York sportswriter did on Ty in his BS book, after Cobb was dead of course and wasn't able to defend himself. Cobb was one of those guys who would have been great in any era. Same goes for the Babe. He saved baseball after the Black Sox scandal and he changed the game. Not too many players, Cobb included, can make that claim. And Ruth was colorful. People loved him because he played the game like a big kid just having fun. Problem was he handled off-field life the same way. One of my favorite stories about Babe Ruth was the time one of his teammates got beaned in the head and Babe asked how the guy was doing. They told him he had a case of amnesia. Babe replied: "Tell him to save me a bottle." How can ya not love a guy like Babe Ruth.
Yes, I'm puzzled how a legend such as Cobb seems to have been forgotten. People forget that he topped the inaugural voting for the hall of fame. As a side note, this modern standing of Cobb is a major reason I started this channel -- to preserve baseball history in my own small way. Ruth seems to be getting a similar treatment as Cobb. I've also come across comments saying that the term "Ruthian" to describe homers is now obsolete. They claim its now "Judgian." As for the writers, unfortunately votes were not revealed during that time. Someone must've really disliked Cobb and Ruth to keep them off the 1936 ballots.
Ty cobb did not have a controversial reputation until a book written in the 60s came out even though no research was done people just took the book as fact and it tarnished cobb
I love (very) Old school Baseball!! Great video!!!
Thank you!

mathewson was gassed during wwI, and everyone thought he was a good human being.

great video. enjoyed this.
Glad you enjoyed it
Ruth revolutionized, and popularized, the game. Thus I ranked him ahead of Cobb.

Christy Mathewson 1880-1925 not 1920

How could these guys all not be unanimous. 95.1 for Ruth is a travesty.
Yes. The hall thought that both Cobb and Ruth would get in unanimously.
One. (1)
