I hear you man...I was a kid when this was flooding the local radio stations of Philadelphia and South Jersey...my brother killed himself back in ,1992 but turned me on to ELO back in 78, 79....what a decade of great music, the 70's wrote an enormous amount of hits ..this included
It's more than that. The chords and melody line are heart-wrenching and linked up perfectly with lyrics that many can relate to. But even if the lyrics align with nothing in a person's life, Jeff Lynne's delivery comes from deep within and stirs the deep waters in a person's soul. But yes, there IS a strong current of nostalgia woven into the song. The "doo wap" pre-chorus takes us all back to a time when things seemed golden and pure. This song is pure genius, wonderfully recorded. It makes me cry even if I don't want to.
I heard this song for the first time watching Billy Madison in the 90s. I was around 8 or 9 and remember thinking this song was so beautiful and it was playing when Steve Buscemi was putting lipstick on so it was pretty unforgettable LOL. Great song and a timeless classic.
You know why I love ELO so much? Because it's like listening to music from a parallel Earth where The Beatles never broke up, and that's the highest compliment that I can give.
@ Tony Midyett. It is interesting, and I don't doubt that you are aware of this, John Lennon stated that had the Beatles stayed together into the 1970's, they would have created music similar in style to ELO! That was a tremendous compliment by Lennon about the great music of ELO!
My girlfriend's flatmate had A New World Record when we were students in Uppsala in 1977. We almost wore the LP out. This track has always been my favourite and when he sings "I'll just sit tight , through shadows of the night, let it ring forevermore....", it still brings a tear to my eye.
This song reminds me of my wife and I don't think she ever heard this song before she died. I lost her beautiful soul to COVID 3-30-21 RIP my darling Jennifer Ceballos Salazar
Woah, that's an incredibly beautiful interpretation. I was not expecting to find a comment that evokes such beautiful imagery in one sentence. Thank you for sharing your interpretation of the song; it's really profound and melancholic. May your Grand father continue his eternal rest in peace.
For some reason those small tunes, and the ringsignal, and the "hello, how are you" just planted it self in my head today. It has been there for hours. It´s been years since I listened to the song. Strange how it works. Thank You for posting it with lyrics as well.
They play this song at work everyday and I always want to crack up laughing, thinking of Steve Buscemi putting on lipstick and staring longingly at the ceiling
I remember when I was a kid my older brother had tape of ELO and all time when I have the chance I take it because I liked the logo and I tried to make copy with my crayons, after years I got the CD and for me was a big surprise how much I like this band
It’s been a long time since telephones sounded like that. If you get a regular land-line, they STILL sound the same way they sounded in the 1970s!!! But the land-line is going the way of the do-do bird, just like the transistor radio ( short wave radio ) did a few decades before.
I remember when my brother left home joined the us army and I moved into his room and inherited all his albums and 8 tracks. Lol. Every time I hear this song it makes me think of my brother and his room wondering what on earth he might be doing while in boot camp. Man did he have some stories to tell upon return ! Love you Bro ! SAW
You made me remembered my 13 year now I’m 60years old at that time I met my wife whit that son , we still together .from El Salvador.thank you guy’s for that song
When iPod was JUST taking off, I had my iPod, I was only about 15 years old, and I hated the music that kids listened to. Rap was better than it is now, mostly, but it was still shitty to me, and kids criticized me for liking this music. I didn't simply care what they said. I had a boyfriend who loved the music I did, who was sweet to me, and quite frankly, was a great guy. I remember going to a ritzy college, and after a dance, just lied on a balcony bench, listening to this music in my dress.
Always think of a great memory with this song never gets old can listen to it over and over again. That first time we locked eyes and although we parted ways I know what we felt will always remain in our hearts❤
I lay awake in those long ago days, sometimes in overwhelming grief and sorrow, knowing I could tell no one.except my younger sis and only sometimes .Listening to this and a few other songs were like having an advocate who sang my pain to anyone who listened. My mother made fun of me! My grandma did NOT. I suspect Grandma Jean had quite a few discreet convos about how not to eat her own young.
I remember being 5 sitting in my parents station wagon in the summer listening to this song. 1977 I was 5… I would think how sad Jeff must’ve felt. Little did I know that one day I’d be hurting like him 🥲
absolutely kicking myself right now for not getting into this band earlier. the first thing i said was "whoa! he sounds like paul mccartney" and the second was "oh god they're hitting all my buttons"
Wow, You can just hear the heart ache in Jeff's voice.Song gives me goose bumps. Love this song, love this band!!! ELO forever!!!
That one line, “Blue days, black nights”. Hits like a 747.

One of the best underrated groups ever!!!
When did the ratings come out?
Don't bring me down, Gruess!
Listen to America and Thin Lizzy both criminally underrated
Underrated? they were global super stars, numpty
No arguments here about that they really are good for the soul magical❤❤.
The nostalgia of this song makes me wanna cry.

True,it's feels like Jeff is singing it from his heart/soul but feeling sad at the same time.
I'm crying....everytime I watch this. The energy is significant❤
I saw elo live last night in Vancouver … I indeed cried witnessing this live

And John Lennon never died
Love this comment.
IMO, he was the brain-child of The Beatles and George Martin - in numerous directions. When he was good he was fantastic! 🙂
Stones are better than the Beetles
Such a beautiful and sad song. One of ELO's best for sure.

Much worse in 2023 ...sadly
Such a great timeless track, love the emotion in his voice....
So much energy gained from this song. A true masterpiece.
What are you even talking about. This song does not have so much energy, it's a low-key song. Pfft.
IK what you mean. Much love 100mph
Elo meravigliosi, uno dei miei gruppi preferiti.

Those harmonies…seriously. This is a really beautiful song and sad which is perfect. A true masterpiece indeed.
Beautiful song
this song reminds me so much of my grandpa. i always imagine the “telephone line” leading to heaven, and all the things i wish i could say to him.

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and my favorite ELO-song forever! Just brilliant!!❤️👏❤️👏
the best song in life, there's other good songs but this one is so special
after decades of misunderstanding the lyrics, i can finally know what he's really saying; thanks!
Can you help me understand it, please

They play this song at work everyday and I always want to crack up laughing, thinking of Steve Buscemi putting on lipstick and staring longingly at the ceiling
I remember when i first heard this song on a juke box in Pascagoula Mississippi, at the steak and egg house, was 12 years old, loved it and still do.
This is such wonderful music! what a gem, going to look for more ELO songs to groove to.
(i guess my mom really was right afterall)
Indeed!

This is another great song that wouldn't be around if it hand been written twenty years later than that 70s.

Wow!
A beautiful and very sad song 🙏🏻♥️
I have to thank Billy Madison for introducing me to ELO! Love them.
Songs such as this make me wanna go for a drive and not coming back :-)
Love this song bring back good days.
John Lennon said if the Beatles had stayed together in the 1970s, they would have "evolved into a band much like ELO."
He wishes…. There was only one ELO
Great song. It's actually crazy to think about how different this song meant back then people than it does to ppl now
“Telephone Line” (1977), ELO’s breakthrough ballad, might well be their greatest SMASH SONG ever‼️ 💛☎️💛
i agree

Recorded through an actual ''tellyphone'', ELO was far ahead of their time. Jeff Lynne IS a real musical genius.
Cheri, I still remember you sending me this song on a recorded cassette tape. Timing is everything, huh? Always.............
