Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin Lyrics

  • This song is a beautiful all-time classic from the 60s. It was written by Hayward at nineteen years old when he was inspired by satin bedsheets a girlfriend had given him. He explained that "it was a very emotional time" as he "was at the end of one big love affair and the start of another."
The album version of 'Nights in White Satin' included a spoken word poem on the end: "Late Lament." However, I felt the image I was trying to portray was more powerful with only the song. I apologise if this upsets anyone.
The lyrics are in the video, but here also:
Nights in white satin, never reaching the end,
Letters I've written, never meaning to send.
Beauty I'd always missed with these eyes before.
Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore.
'Cos I love you, yes I love you, oh how I love you.
Gazing at people, some hand in hand,
Just what I'm going through they can't understand.
Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend,
Just what you want to be, you will be in the end.
And I love you, yes I love you,
Oh how I love you, oh how I love you.
Nights in white satin, never reaching the end,
Letters I've written, never meaning to send.
Beauty I've always missed, with these eyes before.
Just what the truth is, I can't say anymore.
'Cos I love you, yes I love you,
Oh how I love you, oh how I love you.
'Cos I love you, yes I love you,
Oh how I love you, oh how I love you.

I know it's been a year since you posted this comment but I'm truly sorry for your loss. While it's not exactly the same, I lost my mom when I was 17 years old (I'm 39 now) and in March, I lost my very best friend of 23 years. I also believe that we will see the people we loose again. I think heaven is a replaying our favorite memories and our favorite people coming to see us over and over again.

My Wife of 29 years passed 8/5/2022. For the last 2 weeks as she laid there, sometime aware, sometime not, I'd softly sing this song, as it was her favorite. No matter what, she would smile once I started, except the last 2 days. I think she was between Worlds. I still sang it to her.
Rest in Peace Carolyn, thank you for loving me.

We need a comeback of oldies.... Real music that stirs the soul. Real musicians, beautiful words and feeling in their deliverance. Today is lacking, and I'm very grateful to be almost 56 years old and was born in the sixties when music was real. Bring back real. 😍

I was in my early 20s and living in England when this was released. Still one of the great songs from that classic era. As good today as it was then. Along with 'A whiter shade of pale' by Procol Harum.
Nice to see a younger generation discovering these songs which bring back so many memories for my generation.

I've loved this song since I was young. My parents raised me on oldies stations and classical music. Something about this song always moves me so deeply, I cry without fail every time I hear it. My first love, and my first long term relationship, I told him I wanted this to be our song, and he agreed. He sadly showed me he was undeserving of such pure beauty, so hopefully someday I'll meet someone truly worthy of sharing this song with. As others have said, I love this song so much I want it played at my funeral. It's a truly timeless masterpiece.

    Nights in white satin
    Never reaching the end
    Letters I've written
    Never meaning to send
    Beauty I'd always missed
    With these eyes before
    Just what the truth is
    I can't say anymore
    'Cause I love you
    Yes, I love you
    Oh, how I love you
    Gazing at people
    Some hand in hand
    Just what I'm going through
    They can't understand
    Some try to tell me
    Thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end
    And I love you
    Yes, I love you
    Oh, how I love you
    Oh, how I love you
    Nights in white satin
    Never reaching the end
    Letters I've written

Yes, granted that if it wasn't for Dark Shadows I probably would have NEVER actually heard this song in it's entirety. I actually didn't know how haunting it is, and how much of it I can definitely relate to. I don't for one minute think that this is a kind of love song that is meant for a happily ever after. Instead I think it about knowing what real, true, honest, soul-mate kind of love is, and not having that love, for one reason or another. That my friends is a fate worse then death, and when I hear this song, it is exactly what I feel. All those times I wrote letters that aren't meant to be sent, but meant to be a sort of comfort that maybe they will realize these things without it. And when you see people in their happiness, they don't have a clue what that torture is. I may not be a child of the 60's, but I am not a modern robot void of emotion and truth.....

I love this song and it reminds me to tell others how much you love them as we dont know how long any of us will be on this earth . I lost my sister when I was young and didnt get to tell her much i loved her as I took it for granted . Later in life My fiance died of a heart a few hours after i took her out for coffee. I kissed her goodbye and said I loved her and She said to me as i was looking Down “ Look deep into my eyes when tell me you love ❤️ me. “ I kissed again and looked deep into eyes and soul while I told her I loved her” Thats the last time i saw her and got a call a few hour later she died from a heart attack . I always look loved ones in eye when i say I love you . That was very sad but it is important to let others how much you care for them.

I will never, ever tire of this; the lyrics of being in love with some one to the point of pain is just utterly heartbreaking .

This song was way before my time, but even as a child, I heard this somewhere and it hit me deep in my soul then.. The words are beautiful, I have loved someone with this intensity (and lost them) and it still evokes such strong emotions... I hope to love like this again some day, so I can play this song to them so they can hear/feel the beauty in it

Music from the 60's always felt like someone reaching in my body and grabbing my soul. It relaxes me so much, that it feels like I'm floating. And I'm not from this decade, I was born in 1980. But, grew up listening to music from the 60's & 70's.

... more than 50 years after the release of this record, thrills while listening at it are still there, intact, superb ... Probably no other song make you imagine a night of love like this one ... and you are there, feeling as just being amidst the waves of the sea ... or the satin bedsheets

I was very young in the 60s when I heard this song. I couldn't speak English then, but the melody was so strong, the words,* I love you, yes I love you* stick in my mind to this age. Lovely song.
