Bucket Y I actually think the opposite would happen. Nintendo, king of all gaming powered by Sony, would keep most games in the family-friendly bracket. Maybe Microsoft could jump in with nature games later, but I think part of that vision comes from the mature games on the PlayStation showing its possible. That's scary in its own right.

Surprised you haven't heard of NMS, since it got a lot of negative press around launch, and this was... a couple years ago, i think. Basically the creator promised a lot of things that would be there day 1, and they were just... not. It did get those features eventually via updates, and people liked it a lot more than how it was at launch. However, as for potential entries in a "hated at first, loved later on" countdown, I'd say Luigi's Mansion, EarthBound, and LoZ: Wind Waker, since those games weren't well received when they first came out but people liked them more as time went on. I remember hearing in the case of Luigi's Mansion, it didn't really get popular until the time the Wii came out.
Yeah, I mean, heck, Luigi's Mansion could have also gotten bigger and better press because of it's sequel Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, and the 3ds port of Luigi's Mansion are definitely reasons for it. However, I still feel that Dark Moon helped boost the original's reputation.

A group of people that were working for Atari complained that they weren't getting paid enough, so they left and formed their own studio to make their own games. That studio is now known as "Activision," and it was their actions that caused the over-saturation to start. Even the guys that started the company said that they were indirectly responsible for the crash of '83. Say what you will about Activision, but that is actually pretty unfortunate. The guys just wanted to get paid properly, and in turn they accidentally caused other people to flood the market. Ouch.

Even though Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Secret of Mana and Super Mario RPG were all released at around the same time, towards the end of the Super Nintendo cycle.
Even still, Square was obviously ambitious with FF7 and saw the Nintendo cartridges as too restrictive with what they wanted to do with the game. Considering how big of a game FF7 turned out to be, I think they made the right choice in the end.

A lot of the recent flak Earthbound has been getting comes from Undertale fans, I've noticed. I don't have anything against that game or its fanbase, but a lot of people in the Mother fanbase didn't take Undertale very kindly and pushed back a little too hard, and suddenly all of these Undertale fans that are being told that their game "sucks" compared to Earthbound are looking at this classic more critically. It's unfortunate, really.

Probably because a good chunk of viewers are American, and probably don't know all the details. Arcades were completely fine, and you were golden if you had a computer. It's just that the home console market for a couple of years developed a burnout thanks to oversaturation. Nintendo had to get creative in order to sell their Famicom, basically resorting to calling it a "toy" here in the States. If you already knew all this, sorry. I did a fair amount of research regarding the Crash of '83 a few years back.
That's because the EU for certain had a very robust computer market at the time and computers could always fall back on the fact that they do other things besides video game. We can't exactly ignore that the NES was the Nintendo Entertainment System. If they put console on the cover everyone would have ran away from it on sight, and it took that entire generation of goodwill to walk back from the failure of E.T. and the licensing oversaturation.
Even in the US, home computer software was still doing fine even during the events of the crash in late '82 - early '85. It wasn't until Nintendo showing up that things improved in the console space.
Loot boxes that affect gameplay or lock certain content behind a RNG wall do indeed count as gambling, so long as there is no alternative method of obtaining said content. If you can just purchase the items outright with real money and/or acquired in-game currency, then it turns from a matter of "is it possible" to "when is it possible".

I had a Saturn. If you were willing to search out the 2d games, or go further and get a ram cart and converter, it was an incredible system. Guardian Heroes, Dragonforce, Marvel Cap, all the Darkstalkers. Sadly, it was a 2d powerhouse in a new 3d era.
Sega didn't announce the Saturn the same day it was released. Their surprise announcement was they'd brought the release date forward a good six months because they were worried about getting ahead of the competition. The console had been formally announced a good year or so prior. It annoyed retailers because only select chains had been chosen for the early release. It annoyed developers as it meant bringing game release dates forward. It annoyed consumers because hey, we were kind of budgeting with a set date in mind that you just brought forward. It also meant it launched with a pitifully low number of games - we're talking single digits, three titles if memory serves.

I don't have anything against that game or its fanbase, but a lot of people in the Mother fanbase didn't take Undertale very kindly and pushed back a little too hard, and suddenly all of these Undertale fans that are being told that their game "sucks" compared to Earthbound are looking at this classic more critically. It's unfortunate, really.

Probably because a good chunk of viewers are American, and probably don't know all the details. Arcades were completely fine, and you were golden if you had a computer. It's just that the home console market for a couple of years developed a burnout thanks to oversaturation. Nintendo had to get creative in order to sell their Famicom, basically resorting to calling it a "toy" here in the States. If you already knew all this, sorry. I did a fair amount of research regarding the Crash of '83 a few years back.

That's because the EU for certain had a very robust computer market at the time and computers could always fall back on the fact that they do other things besides video game.
We can't exactly ignore that the NES was the Nintendo Entertainment System. If they put console on the cover everyone would have ran away from it on sight, and it took that entire generation of goodwill to walk back from the failure of E.T. and the licensing oversaturation.
Even in the US, home computer software was still doing fine even during the events of the crash in late '82 - early '85.
It wasn't until Nintendo showing up that things improved in the console space.

If you can just purchase the items outright with real money and/or acquired in-game currency, then it turns from a matter of "is it possible" to "when is it possible".

I had a Saturn. If you were willing to search out the 2d games, or go further and get a ram cart and converter, it was an incredible system. Guardian Heroes, Dragonforce, Marvel Cap, all the Darkstalkers. Sadly, it was a 2d powerhouse in a new 3d era.

Sega didn't announce the Saturn the same day it was released. Their surprise announcement was they'd brought the release date forward a good six months because they were worried about getting ahead of the competition. The console had been formally announced a good year or so prior. It annoyed retailers because only select chains had been chosen for the early release. It annoyed developers as it meant bringing game release dates forward. It annoyed consumers because hey, we were kind of budgeting with a set date in mind that you just brought forward. It also meant it launched with a pitifully low number of games - we're talking single digits, three titles if memory serves.
Which, to be completely fair, was more games than what the Nintendo 64 launched with.
