In case you don't know, no Mega has HP change so Mega Meganium having 125 is a bit cheaty. However, I suggest redistributing Base Meganium's stat to match it, so it doesn't look weird (in reply cuz TH-cam is weird with long comment)

Worst thing is, despite all of its weaknesses, Grass has such great resistances that it's genuinely far from terrible (though having it as a pure type is really not good, it can easily shine as a dual type, similar to Bug in that regard). So while yes, I kind of agree with the sentiment, I still think that Grass deserves more respect, it's not Rock or Ice for example and I'd rather be pure Grass than pure Psychic or Normal defensively as I at least have resistances and things to pivot into
Theorycrafted like a Toxic, fucked up version of the Meganium haha. Just a glimpse into my dark reality. A full stare into my twisted perspective would make most simply go insane lmao
If you don’t mind, I’d like to put my ideas for a bulky support/sweeper onto this. First: BST. Remove 30 from its Speed, dropping it to 50 to be better in Trick Room. Give all of that extra stats to HP to boost it from a disappointing 80 to a very respectable 110. Then drop 10 from its Attack (82->72) and give it to Special Attack (83->93). Next, the type is actually the one thing I keep the same. The rest of the Johto starters are monotype as well, and I don’t want to give it a secondary type like Dragon because “it’s a Dino”, Fairy because “flower = fairy”, or Poison because “flower = poisonous”. Instead, I’d like to give it two new abilities (ideally imo all starters would get three ability options instead of two, and they can just be locked into their “signature” starter abilities when given as starters). First, give it Thick Fat since they beeg and it means the two most important weaknesses of Grass are erased. Secondly, my personal favorite change, give it Flower Veil. It actually affects the user as well as partners as long as they’re Grass type, but no Flower Veil Pokémon as of currently are Grass type. What does Flower Veil do? Blocks all stat drops and all status conditions. Now it not only can’t be burned, paralyzed, slept, frozen, or poisoned, but it also blocks Intimidate, Parting Shot, the slowing of Icy Wind, and so much more. Finally, four new moves. Earth Power to hit Fire, Steel, and Poison types that previously resisted its STAB. Strength Sap to heal against physical threats while also crippling them. Pollen Puff to hit fellow Grass types and heal allies in Doubles. And finally, Calm Mind to be a more thematically fitting boosting move that works better with its new Special leaning. Now, Meganium is able to use moves, abilities, and stats to become a true defensive powerhouse by minimizing the weaknesses of the Grass type and maximizing its strengths. It’s a Calm Mind sweeper in Trick Room who can also become a team cleric that keeps itself and its teammates at high HP while whittling you down and either being hard to hit super efficiently with Thick Fat or impossible to weaken with Flower Veil.
honestly idk if this goes far enough but i love how it keeps meganium relevant without drastically changing their identity, like the video or other comentors suggested
@@charlescalvin8680 yeah, it likely won’t see use in anything like OU or high power level VGC formats like Reg F, but I could see it having a solid role in things like RU/UU or Reg H, which is already a massive buff for it. Glad you approve!
I love you for this. I agree so much with this. The flower veil and calm mind is what I've been feeling for years. I love this so much as meganium is my favorite starter
The problem with the grass type is that it has far too many common weaknesses to more offensive types, and any grass type *needs* to be exceptional in some way outside of its typing in order to be viable. All the other grass starters excel in some way - be it stats, ability, movepool, or an additional typing that makes up for the grass side. A mono grass type with mixed bulk can never work; it has to specialize in one of either defenses to be effective! Excellent video as always
Gen 2 was not nice to grass. It beats only Chuck’s Poliwrath (and kinda Bryce’s team) of all the gym leaders. Kanto had Rock water and ground gym leaders . Johto didn’t.
Grass is underrated as a defensive typing, while it has common weaknesses, it also has very good resistances. There are many grass types that has been able to function as defensive mon over the years. I agree it should specialize in one out of the two defendes though, it would need much better stats if it was to do both, which doesnt fit a starter.
No megas change the base hp of the pokemon, probably because it might be weird in game when the pokemon return to base form with the hp not being calculated in percentages. Also the thing that makes clefable and quagsire great is mainly their abilities, so I would say change the trash that is leaf guard (i think it has leaf guard? idk it might be something else useless) into magic guard and it will be viable.
5:14 this example is tiresome lol that's an egg move. It's there because it'll grow arms. How is Meganium gonna grow fire or ice? Great video but some of the justification doesn't really hold up. If the reason is vibes I would just embrace that tbh
5:04 Not only does Wooper have access to Ice Punch (Gastly also has access to the elemental punches despite... you know, not having hands), but Tyranitar, Aggron, and Rhydon can learn Hydro Pump, Gourgeist can learn Fire Blast, and _Cubone_ can learn Ice Beam. Despite all of them being weak to said moves.
4:00 I don't disagree with your overall conclusion, but Water Spout is a baffling choice, since not only does the chart you show confirm it was never a signature move, but so does anyone who remembers trying to set up on Wallace's Wailord in Emerald. Like, I vastly more closely associate that move with Wailord, specifically for that one fight.
huh, I've never seen anyone suggest grass poison. Me personally I've always liked the idea of giving all the johto starters an additional normal typing
I'd say it's best to keep Meganium in line with its lore, where it's known for being gentle, passive, bringing life to plants around it, and having a sweet aroma. With that, I'd say Grass/Fairy with an ability that either makes it resist its weaknesses (like Filter), or something like Grassy Surge. Giving it Rock Slide instead of just Ancient Power can help as well. Plus, now having access to Fairy-type moves helps offensively. Giving it Worry Seed, Floral Healing, and Flower Shield also helps
Here’s something better in my opinion Type: Grass/Fairy Ability: Overgrow, Grass pelt Mega ability: Triage No stat redistribution Mega stats: HP: 80 Attack: 92 Defence: 120 Sp.atk: 108 Sp.def: 125 Speed: 100 Additional moves: Draining kiss Sleep powder Calm mind Earth power Dazzling gleam Sleep powder Strength sap Power whip

Movepool is a big reason Meganium fell off the way it did tho. It has a decent support movepool, but it’s nowhere good enough to compete with mons like Vileplume or even Eviolite Tangela/Roselia. Sleep Powder and Strength Sap would do wonders for it. Toxic Spikes too would be a nice addition. It just needs options so it can be a flexible support. Add a hidden ability change (which they’ve already done with starters like Empoleon) like Triage or Regenerator and it can actually thrive a bit in the lower tiers. Personally, the best way to fix Meganium is to double down on its support role by giving it the proper tools to make use of its decent bulk. An offensive Meganium was only legit back in Gen 2 when the power level was significantly lower and bulky mons were prized because they could last long.
my way to fix meganium would be make it grass/fairy, and if you want to give it a new ability i’d give it triage. then it could run giga drain/draining kiss as stab with priority. all it would need from there is a boosting move like calm mind and ground coverage for poison and steel types
Alternatively: ●Give meganium grass/fairy typing ●Triage as hidden ability ●draining kiss, horn leech (for dd sets) ●lower both defenses by 10 and give 10 to HP and sp.Att ●sleep powder There you go, unique bulky healer/cleric. potential set: ○leech seed ○giga drain ○draning kiss ○sleep powder ability: triage nature: modest EV spread: 252 HP, 252 spAtt, 4 sp.Def
i would personally try to make meganium better by making it a much stronger support pokemon, but these changes are really cool and creative. Hopefully we get at least some kind of buff in the new legends game.
Malignant chain doesnt confuse a pokemon the confusion effect comes from pecharunt's ability which confuses a pokemon that it either poisons or badly poisons
Meg's biggest issue to me is it's movepool is crap paired with a lackluster ability. It's got no good Fire coverage, awful Speed, and no Chloro boost, why would I ever put it out in the sun? It'd die to an Ember. I once had 3 megas drawn up for Johto's starters. They all gained their weakness as a secondary type and learned some thematically appropriate TM moves from that type as well as gained some really useful unique abilities. Typhlosion was a volcanic geyser themed Fire/Water which ignored most Fire and Water damage/effect mitigation and negative Rain/Sun weather effects on it's moves, including Harsh Rain/Sun. It didn't ignore the type effectiveness chart though, a Flamethrower still would do less damage to a Charizard and couldn't Burn it for instance. Typhlosion also learned a Fire type support move called Heat Therapy which healed a target 25% max hp and cured Par or Frz (and would instantly thaw a Frozen user if they successfully tried to use it, even if the move fails just so long as the user would pass all call checks like flinch, confusion, or disabled otherwise the user will have a standard Frz check to see if it thaws naturally and will then flinch, hit itself, or be unable to us Heat Therapy if it does.) Feraligatr was a swamp monster themed Water/Grass which would nullify opponents' positive stat modifiers when active. It didn't remove them or stop them from being added to (ironically it counted as an intimidation effect and would proc an opponent's Rattled every turn), it just didn't allow them to apply to calculations while active. It also did nothing to protect your own stats from unwanted modification. And Meganium was a fiery thorny floral dinosaur themed Grass/Fire which always treated all attacks it used or receieved as though they were under Sun conditions. MegaMeg got like +10 Atk, 30 Def, 10 SAtk, 30 SDef, 20 Spd to its base stats, which seems kinda middling for a Mega, but it fixed up its Speed quite a bit, made it *BULKY,* and lightly lifted its offensive potential right up until one considered it would always +2 Atk and SAtk on a Growth, wing off 1 turn STAB Solarbeam/blades, and launch Sun boosted STAB Fire Weather Balls because of its Ability. A MegaSalamance or MegaPinsir would still dumpster it, but those were Aerilate Mega nuisances for the whole metagame so hardly anything new there.
I think Meganiums main issue is actually its abilities in combination to its less than optimal stat distribution and movepool. Its HP is way lower than what you would want for a bulky Mon despite base 100 defenses, at least base 100 HP and boosting its defenses to 110 each could help better. What abilities though? Overgrow has to stay, but Leaf Guard has to go. Unaware could work, making it way better at tanking hits from setup sweepers, or even a new ability that makes moves like Giga Drain or Leech Seed heal more, like the Big Root item. Lean into that defensive profile so you dont have to justify giving it a new type. Would it make Meganium better? Yes, but probably only in the lower tiers since Grass still isnt a great defensive type. But at least it would help it a lot more than what it has now
Common ways Meganium gets somewhat fixed in fan games is by giving it Dragon Dance and defensive abilities like Thick Fat. Is not like it becomes powerful, but it gets the change to buff itself and start sweeping. I like Physical Meganium better.
Jothor's initials are the same numbers, but organized to make a different role. out the typlosion his numbers are to have an equal battle with the charizard.
A mega evolution would be really cool, but I think Meganium's salvageable without turning it into a new pokemon. Replace leaf guard with a good ability, give it one or two really good spammable signature moves and a signature item (light orb but for hp let's gooo)
Problem is, game freak doesn't intend to buff a pokemon stats without proper reason or change it's typing. It's usually the ability that get swapped to something better or give it a move that make it valid in battles
I made a (Sorta) regional form for Meganium, it's a grass/rock type slow physically bulky physical attacker, similar thing to Great Tusk. Also, Embaor with a terrible design? My lawyers will be in waiting
If I had my hands on meganeium I’d make it relatively fast and bulky because I love those stat spreads, thick fat with 90 speed and 110 in hp would go far in making it better instead of mid all around 😭
Give Meganium an ability that sets up Grassy Terrain and gets a 1.333x attack and special attack boost when Grassy Terrain is active Boom, problem solved
I think her stat spread is pretty good, it's just her abilities and move pool are DIRT. They should make multiscale her hidden ability and give access to both dragon and quiver dance, and trailblaze for setting up a sweep. Other misc attacking moves like moonblast, earth power, leaf blade, x scissor, psychic and aura sphere. And for support give her wish, follow me, and rapid spin. Lowkey an instant OU even without the mega.
@charlescalvin8680 Ooh mad 🥴 Most OU mons are in that tier either because of their ability and moves, or because they match up well against others in the tier. Alomomola and Clefable are examples of this. A bulky and fast grass type with fighting, ground, psychic and fairy coverage already upsets half the mons currently in OU, especially if it can run multiple sets.
@@Ltcolkilgore19 yeah, the problem is that meganium has ok speed and alright bulk, you compared your version of meganium to clef and alomomola, and the problem with that is that both of them have top 3 types while meganium has a bottom 3 type, alomomola has better bulk and clef has a way stronger ability, but meganium stats and typing leave it at best as an niche spinner in UU
Here me out. Give it the fairy type and Triage( Comfay’s signature ability) and finally give it a nasty plot or tail glow clone. I promise it will be doing numbers
I wouldn't need a boosting move with Merciless + Leaf Storm because crits ignore the stat drop, QD is overdoing it imo. When going over abilities I thought you'd go with something like Chlorophyll maybe buffed like it always crits in the sun + speed, cuz like fuck it, some of the newer mons have abilities that are just 2 abilities like Bloodmoon and the rider forms
Good spread but I think you min maxed it too much. 125hp, 160spa, 140spdef and 105spd feels like it’s too much especially with quiver, fire blast and ice beam
You lost me at Quiver Dance. This is a buff just for the sake of buffing. Would prefer to keep it at least slightly realistic... Fun video anyways, but yeah that's a bit much 😬
Small note: malignant chain wont confuse if maganium uses it, it will only toxic. The confusion comes from pechurants ability
2:07 I would argue giving Meganium Grass/Fairy, thematically it fits better than dragon and poison in my oppinion

Meganium new stat spread
HP: 80 -> 125 (+45)
ATK: 82 -> 65 (-17)
DEF: 100 -> 85 (-15)
SPATK: 83 -> 85 (+2)
SPDEF: 100 -> 85 (-15)
SPE: 80
(45 - 17 - 15 + 2 - 15 = 0) => Total unchanged at 525

Personally, I would buff meganium without changing it's stats or typing in this way:
1) teach it the following:
Rage Powder (read Bayleef's Pokedex entry)
Barrier (+2 defense, already learns Reflect and Light Screen via level up)
Growth
Strength Sap
Flower Shield (4 fun)
If I'm being spicy:
Stored power
Baton pass
2) Give it Flower Veil (Triage is great and all but radical red already did that)
Why this meganium is good:
-resists Surging Strikes
-immune to stat drops, including Intimidate and icy wind
-immune to status including burn or paralysis, so you can sweep with swords dance and trailblaze
-you keep your stat boosts.
-immune to Rage Powder
-learn Rage Powder for doubles, for redirection whose defense cannot be lowered
-strength sap lowers attack while healing for longetivity
-Barrier to boost defense for Body press and Stored power
-cannot be burned so Body Press does full damage
-Growth for +4 stat boost in sun combined with Stored power
-interesting tera, since it loses the benefits of its ability if it changes types, but allies that are grass type or use tera grass benefit
-baton pass to pass boosts that are difficult to remove
-great with co star flamigo
-great baton pass receiver too (haze and clear smog are the only outs)

Lean into that defensive profile so you dont have to justify giving it a new type. Would it make Meganium better? Yes, but probably only in the lower tiers since Grass still isnt a great defensive type. But at least it would help it a lot more than what it has now
Merciless? I dunno, Meganium is too cute and friendly looking to have that ability
Common ways Meganium gets somewhat fixed in fan games is by giving it Dragon Dance and defensive abilities like Thick Fat. Is not like it becomes powerful, but it gets the change to buff itself and start sweeping. I like Physical Meganium better.
Malignant Chain only poisons the target, it doesn't confuse them.
My favorite and only mega pokemon to stay in the game
Yanmega 😢
As you said, poison type, malightic chain, quiver dance and merciless, but give her flamethrower and earth power GIVE HER EARTH POWER
goofy ahh stat spread
Give Meganium an ability that sets up Grassy Terrain and gets a 1.333x attack and special attack boost when Grassy Terrain is active
Boom, problem solved
holy shit 635 bst is insane, idk if it would take that much
I think her stat spread is pretty good, it's just her abilities and move pool are DIRT.
Lowkey an instant OU even without the mega.
my fellow a mono grass mon with mid stats is going to be bad even with those changes, what you suggested helps a lot but its maybe ru at best m8
@@charlescalvin8680 Rillaboom
@@Ltcolkilgore19 bro rillaboom has great bulk, great attack, strong priority and a pivot move, dont you dare try to compare them
@charlescalvin8680 Ooh mad 🥴
Most OU mons are in that tier either because of their ability and moves, or because they match up well against others in the tier.
4:17 "erm achually malignant chain only poisons because of pecharunt's ability 🤓"
Also you should add hex on to the moveset for the lols
Here me out. Give it the fairy type and Triage( Comfay’s signature ability) and finally give it a nasty plot or tail glow clone. I promise it will be doing numbers
it always makes me so sad whenever i see people drag meganium, i love its design a ton. meganium fan club unite 🗣️🔥
No mega evolution increases HP btw, so I guess just raise its defenses more
I wouldn't need a boosting move with Merciless + Leaf Storm because crits ignore the stat drop, QD is overdoing it imo. When going over abilities I thought you'd go with something like Chlorophyll maybe buffed like it always crits in the sun + speed, cuz like fuck it, some of the newer mons have abilities that are just 2 abilities like Bloodmoon and the rider forms
No mega evolution boosts HP so i think you should rebalance the stats to account for that.
Sometimes I think gamefreak just hates grass types besides a select few
MEGANIUM?!?! I’M ONLY HUMAN AFTER ALL!!ii!!ii11!!
I love meganium and chesnaught partially because of the hate they get, they are amazing Pokémon and I love them dearly
please dont put the goat and meganium in the same league
man can you stop with the descriptions
Bro you CLICKED IT 😭
Good spread but I think you min maxed it too much. 125hp, 160spa, 140spdef and 105spd feels like it’s too much especially with quiver, fire blast and ice beam
Lil bro made her a monster haha
Emboar hate is not needed.
💀 Grass/Fairy would’ve made more sense
How is it just a her, and then go on to saying “it”
Meganium justice
I dont care if he sucks I like him how he is
>:0 wdym despite emboar’s bad design
Pokemon snap reference tail glow woahhhhhh
Meganium isn’t even ranked in the tier below ZU, SU.
😂
Meganium is my favorite pokemon
You lost me at Quiver Dance. This is a buff just for the sake of buffing. Would prefer to keep it at least slightly realistic...
Fun video anyways, but yeah that's a bit much 😬
My girl was done bad :)
7:23 EXCUSE YOU
HOW DARE YOU
the way i would fix meganium is simply just erasing it from existence
🗣🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
They* ☝️🤓 but meganium can be male too
>she
Primer comentario hell yeah
If you like meganium alot play emerald redux, its an emerald from hack where every pokemon has 4 abilities and meganium is hella broken in that game
