On one hand I agree. On the other hand; I was thrown off by how this episode starts; with Aron seemingly recovering from laughing from something and then going into the video topic. Maybe he did that on purpose? I dunno! I'm gonna stop typing now as I think I made my point and I'm just ram................
I think Sheckler used to do them, even in contest runs. I think a reason why they aren't popular besides the reasons you mentioned is that they seem kind of gimmicky. Like yeah they can look cool and take skill, but they're also kind of like a random video game circus trick, and skaters can be snobs so maybe that's why they didn't catch on.
You nailed with that last reason, 100%. You’ll still see some random clips of some park wizard kid doing a random fly-out backflip in an instagram montage. I’m telling you, Instagram is shite but it’s caused an explosion in insane tricks.
@2.56 second trick. On a more important note, Its incredibly refreshing to listen to a clearly well educated skateboarder talk about the sport and not just another illiterate skater who grunts and acts too cool for existence. Keep up the amazing work, whenever i see your videos in my feed i always know I’m in for a treat. Big love from Scotland
Has a University degree and is well spoken....Can't coordinate his body with simple Physics. Intelligent people lack something more simple people do, that is the ability not to overthink things and it is actually a skill to able to simplify a complicated task, if your a smart person you usually play out all probable outcomes before doing anything, this messes with their commitment, thus making them less rad on a skateboard.
Just wanna say that I've been watching for a while now and have really been enjoying your videos. I love how in-depth you take your research and fact checking. Keep up the good work my man.
This channel should have so many more subs. You bring back so many of my childhood memories on a topic not discussed as much nowadays. If you're reading this rad rat, keep making these amazing videos. THPS2 on the gameboy color was my first skateboarding game and even my first ever game.
Just a note here. In '79 Mark Lake was doing Lake flips, which is a backflip to fakie where he puts his front hand on the coping to guide himself back into the ramp. Sort of in-between a miller flip and a backflip. This episode of Jeff Grosso's Loveletters to Skateboarding has one 6 minutes and 15 seconds in. th-cam.com/video/xhzQVlbrAgw/w-d-xo.html
3 foot 11.75 Einrich Meinz of Germany. This puts him a quarter inch shorter than WeeMan. 7 foot 11.25 Ying Tao Yingsztu of China These are the heights based on either bring a pro with a video part in a skate video or medaling in a major professional skateboard competition. That’s all I could find.
I dont think thrasher neccesareily tries to pick the absolute best skateboarder wvery year so much as a solid skater who made yhe MOST impact on skateboarding. Its usually someone who puts out a really good video part or two, gets solid commercial exposure , inteeviews and lots of footage overall.
Exactly. I'd call it "best skateboarding performance while maintaining Thrasher's image of a skater". I add in that second part because Sheckler and Nyjah could never get it no matter what tricks they did.
Dave gravette does backflip tucknee's. But honestly i think one of the reasons people dont do them that much is just because its somewhat of an ugly looking trick. Id rather see a stylish 360 over a funbox or a nice tech air then a backflip.
Flyouts are one of the most clowned-on things in skateboarding, and most backflips are done as flyouts. No one was hating when Cardiel and Gravette did them over pyramids.
Just want to drop a plug for the old school snakeboarders / 'streetboarders' who do lots of body flip tricks. If you haven't seen them, these boards are kind of like a skateboard with footstraps. Gabi Muñoz has done a double backflip and a backflip to 50-50. Max Anderson did a 720 misty flip down stairs. Brinton Gunderson did rodeo 900s. Pretty crazy stuff - look it up!
the back barrel roll wont be done on a skateboard because to do it u have to push your hips out straight away off the jump to initiate the spin and without the board strapped to your feet it will be impossible
Glad I found your channel. Great work. RIDE did a short-lived show a few years ago with a British guy covering trick history and things, but I don't think their audience enjoyed it sadly.
I just remembered that i seen someone do a Backflip the other way. You still grab Indy but instead of flipping nose to tail you go literally backwards like a somersault.
first backflip i ever saw was Sluggo in Red Dragons "RDS/FSU 2002" one of my favorite videos ever and also coincidentally my youtube logo since like '06
Sluggo is a gun at gymnastics and he's small, you basically have to be a gymnast to be able to do one like sluggo does, snowboarders usually do it like a side barrel roll
Actually there is one guy who tries to film himself doing every single skateboard trick ever heard of, I saw a trailer of a documentary about his project some years ago. I wasn't able to find it anymore though.
The video of Sluggo on the DC ramp that kept playing while you were talking about wildcats was the only skateboarding backflip ever done that WASN'T a wildcat. He's actually flipping toward his back.
Maybe if someone was also awesome at tricking they could invent some kind of insane spinning double backflip twist or whatever their moves are called with a skateboard.
Snowboarder here... so the clip of the snowboarder at 8:30 is what a wildcat is... the trick on a skateboard that is next is known to snowboarders as a crippler
I got extrememly excited when I saw this title... I've always wondered this, and you made an amazing video on "why nobody cared about the first 1080", so I'm assuming this will be just as interesting and insightful. I stopped watching for a bit when you said that you'd be taking a break from TH-cam for a while. It's good to see it was short-lived.
i dont know if skater of the year is necessarily "best in the world"... also, idk if its THAT impossible to learn every trick. R Mullen pretty much did most tricks BESIDES ramp tricks. if someone like Mullen wanted to skate ramps, it could maybe almost happen.
I doubt anyone could learn every Rodney Mullen trick, let alone the dangerous Tony Hawk stuff like the 900, kickflip McTwist and the loop... Not to mention the Lyon 25. It is impossible.
Rad Rat could you find video of two tricks of Chris Joslin that dont' seem to be on youtube: Inward Heel Wallenberg imgur.com/IrANCNG Hardflip revert Wallenberg www.rollingstone.com/sports/features/chris-joslin-born-under-a-bad-sign-20150616 I know this isn't really an ask radrat but I was wondering if you could apply your skateboarding detective skills to find video!
Hey Rad Rat, Really enjoy your video's and especially your gaming reviews! I have a suggestion for a video for you. Maybe you could review freerunning the game for the PC, published by Rebellion. I know it might not be skateboarding related but I think it still fits your channel and I would love to see you review it!
Hey why is the shirt you're wearing listed as 'beanplant' on your website? that's what I would call a boneless, beanplants are grabbed with the front arm on the side of the nose while bonelesses are grabbed with your back hand like an indy grab
I can't remember who it was. But a while ago I remember a video were a guy did a bunch of backflip tricks. Mini ramp transferstuff like backflip out one ramp to grind the coping of the next.
Hey rad rat, have you heard of beaver fleming he is the king of backflip variations. If you search up "beaver fleming king of flyouts" there should be a rad video on him. You should go Check it out. He inspired me to do a backflip
That intimate eye contact at the beginning 😤👌
ThunBeast 💦 Rad 💦 Rat 💦
This is the funniest shit I’ve ever read
you're getting better and better with your show. always enjoyable to watch.👍
On one hand I agree. On the other hand; I was thrown off by how this episode starts; with Aron seemingly recovering from laughing from something and then going into the video topic. Maybe he did that on purpose? I dunno! I'm gonna stop typing now as I think I made my point and I'm just ram................
He needs to do a video about YOU lol
@@SQUIRTGANG yeah
I think Sheckler used to do them, even in contest runs. I think a reason why they aren't popular besides the reasons you mentioned is that they seem kind of gimmicky. Like yeah they can look cool and take skill, but they're also kind of like a random video game circus trick, and skaters can be snobs so maybe that's why they didn't catch on.
You nailed with that last reason, 100%. You’ll still see some random clips of some park wizard kid doing a random fly-out backflip in an instagram montage. I’m telling you, Instagram is shite but it’s caused an explosion in insane tricks.
That video of the guy falling from a backflip in the pool was enough answer. No words were needed
Hi, could you do a video about most famous spots, history of them etc...
We're not the most educated part of the society... Actually I don't know any skateboarder with a university degree
Has a University degree and is well spoken....Can't coordinate his body with simple Physics. Intelligent people lack something more simple people do, that is the ability not to overthink things and it is actually a skill to able to simplify a complicated task, if your a smart person you usually play out all probable outcomes before doing anything, this messes with their commitment, thus making them less rad on a skateboard.
roboliño schmidt Truman Hooker has a PHD.
Sheckler used to do them quite a bit.
FifthGear first person that came to mind
DANYAL same
Which is why no one else does them.
The first person to come to my mind was Danny way
Just wanna say that I've been watching for a while now and have really been enjoying your videos. I love how in-depth you take your research and fact checking. Keep up the good work my man.
If you learned ever trick ever you would basically just be a tony hawk character
even better than that, which really puts it into perspective lol
Can you do a video on the best skateboarders who never went pro?
This channel should have so many more subs. You bring back so many of my childhood memories on a topic not discussed as much nowadays. If you're reading this rad rat, keep making these amazing videos. THPS2 on the gameboy color was my first skateboarding game and even my first ever game.
Gravette does them

th-cam.com/video/xhzQVlbrAgw/w-d-xo.html
Why the hell are you so underrated?!
Hers a question who is the tallest pro skateboarder and the shortest pro skateboarder to ever skate in history
Shortest pro is definitely Wee Man from jack ass
Poncho Moler might be the shortest
Figgy is 6'4"
the largest ed duff.
3 foot 11.75 Einrich Meinz of Germany. This puts him a quarter inch shorter than WeeMan.
7 foot 11.25 Ying Tao Yingsztu of China
These are the heights based on either bring a pro with a video part in a skate video or medaling in a major professional skateboard competition. That’s all I could find.

Exactly. I'd call it "best skateboarding performance while maintaining Thrasher's image of a skater". I add in that second part because Sheckler and Nyjah could never get it no matter what tricks they did.
I was under the impression the voting was a formality and Phelps just picks who he wants.
Joseph Lozano oh it is...
derekperc yeah that about right.
Dave gravette does backflip tucknee's. But honestly i think one of the reasons people dont do them that much is just because its somewhat of an ugly looking trick. Id rather see a stylish 360 over a funbox or a nice tech air then a backflip.
Ruben Tevreden idk, I don't think backflips are ugly...plus I've seen some super laid out backflips on instagram and that has a lot of style imo
Kyle Ganger k
Flyouts are one of the most clowned-on things in skateboarding, and most backflips are done as flyouts. No one was hating when Cardiel and Gravette did them over pyramids.
Well now I want to see someone do one of those tamedog flips on a skateboard.
Just a quick correction, in snowboarding the backflip variation he called tamedog is a wildcat.
Ral_Dogg C well he said he was wrong in the video on the side but he didn’t give the name so thx
8:28 He knows, it's already in the video
Wildcat is backflip version of Tamedog...
Great video but just a note a tamedog on a snowboard is just the opposite of a wildcat or just a frontflip
Yoo dude gotta question ppl say backside boneless in transision they grab with there front hand butt thats a bean plant is there a reason for this
holy crap is that Jeff Grosso doing the backflip at 6:05?
Definitely looked like him. Think we kinda forget how good he actually was cos he spent so long telling us he sucked lol
the back barrel roll wont be done on a skateboard because to do it u have to push your hips out straight away off the jump to initiate the spin and without the board strapped to your feet it will be impossible
Glad I found your channel. Great work. RIDE did a short-lived show a few years ago with a British guy covering trick history and things, but I don't think their audience enjoyed it sadly.

first backflip i ever saw was Sluggo in Red Dragons "RDS/FSU 2002" one of my favorite videos ever and also coincidentally my youtube logo since like '06
I remember Andy mac landed something similar to a "tame dog" type of flip in his runs quite often.
When is someone gonna do a backflip on the skateboard, as in like a body varial but backflip
Screw doing back flips, do a front flip :P
Sluggo is a gun at gymnastics and he's small, you basically have to be a gymnast to be able to do one like sluggo does, snowboarders usually do it like a side barrel roll
I love it when you talk about freestyle
Actually there is one guy who tries to film himself doing every single skateboard trick ever heard of, I saw a trailer of a documentary about his project some years ago. I wasn't able to find it anymore though.
sheckler did one in contest and bob burnquist did a christ air backflip over the mega ramp.
The video of Sluggo on the DC ramp that kept playing while you were talking about wildcats was the only skateboarding backflip ever done that WASN'T a wildcat. He's actually flipping toward his back.
What impact do you think rob dyrdek had on skateboarding? With his shows, appearances on skate, and hand in dc shoes, etc.
Chris Cole did a backflip in KOTR
What about miller flips
Maybe if someone was also awesome at tricking they could invent some kind of insane spinning double backflip twist or whatever their moves are called with a skateboard.
followed ya since the Aronl days, love this ask rad rat series so much!!! thanks for the rad content
I'm surprised you didn't mention that Bucky Lasek did two backflips in this THPS2 video.
Snowboarder here... so the clip of the snowboarder at 8:30 is what a wildcat is... the trick on a skateboard that is next is known to snowboarders as a crippler
Is 8:43 closer to a tamedog than a backflip? Great episode BTW. You've hit the stride!
waiting for this channel to blow up
Can u do a video on balancing caspers
i have never stood on a skateboard but i love those vids!
Keep on doing what you're doing!
Cheers from germany :)
that type of side-backflip on a snowboard is called a wildcat, hence why tame dog = frontflip
This channel is a skateboard encyclopedia,
Questo canale è una enciclopedia dello skateboard,
I wish there was italian subtitles
Danny Way and Cardiel have also done backflips.
The world needs more flatland comps
At 8:40 that looks like a tamedog/barrel roll not a backflip 🤔
I have seen one guy irl doing a backflip.
It's good to see it was short-lived.
the begining pause had me weak, great video 👌🏼👌🏼
Cheers man. Good video.
This channel rules!!!!
Did anyone notice him saying "Second Trick.." instead of "Second question.." at 2:54 ? Lol just saying! Love your videos mate!
The awkward first 3 seconds tho lmao
i dont know if skater of the year is necessarily "best in the world"... also, idk if its THAT impossible to learn every trick.
It is impossible.
sluggo part is RDS/FSU/2002
watch that shit, mind will be blown
Backflip Tim on instagram has some pretty nuts variations instagram.com/p/BThGR_5Devn/
Snow is softer than concrete!
Like a lot of other people have said i think backflips just don't look that great in skateboarding and do seem gimmicky
a "regular" back flip in snowboarding btw is called a "wild cat". wild cat, and tame dog.
Rad Rat could you find video of two tricks of Chris Joslin that dont' seem to be on youtube:
Inward Heel Wallenberg imgur.com/IrANCNG
Hardflip revert Wallenberg www.rollingstone.com/sports/features/chris-joslin-born-under-a-bad-sign-20150616
I know this isn't really an ask radrat but I was wondering if you could apply your skateboarding detective skills to find video!
That water tower gap doh...
There is a guy at my local park that can do backflips, he even backflipped over my friend.
Hey Rad Rat,
Really enjoy your video's and especially your gaming reviews! I have a suggestion for a video for you. Maybe you could review freerunning the game for the PC, published by Rebellion. I know it might not be skateboarding related but I think it still fits your channel and I would love to see you review it!
Tf no
SBN was not a surprise but Daveed Gonzalez was quite controversial
David Gravette CSFU
2nd trick?
Hey why is the shirt you're wearing listed as 'beanplant' on your website? that's what I would call a boneless, beanplants are grabbed with the front arm on the side of the nose while bonelesses are grabbed with your back hand like an indy grab
X88X but his front hand isn’t grabbing like an Indy in the photo
The front hand is in the air
its a beanplant.
X88X you're looking at it incorrectly
The question in the title is 5:45
I can't remember who it was. But a while ago I remember a video were a guy did a bunch of backflip tricks. Mini ramp transferstuff like backflip out one ramp to grind the coping of the next.
Mrskategnar was the channel name !
Only rollerbladers do flip to grinds. Some scooter kids are starting to do it. Never seen skateboard and bmx do it.
80s and 90s were amazing for freestylers
*John Rankin* i miss them. The best duo ever
Sluggo's still doing it...even better now I think...there's very little 'twist' in this one from last year - th-cam.com/video/ZLdFi8gOt68/w-d-xo.html
What happened to Bill Pepper and Colt Cannon? Also, why did Colt Cannon only wear khakis?
I really wanna see a skater do a tamedog.
Bon Burquist doing front flips in mega ramp and Dany way doing back flips rocket man
u rock
Most underrated channel
I think your dog was chewing on the mic XD
Great content
Anthony van Engelen 2015 Age 37
Hey rad rat, have you heard of beaver fleming he is the king of backflip variations. If you search up "beaver fleming king of flyouts" there should be a rad video on him. You should go Check it out. He inspired me to do a backflip
Good vid bro keep it up please
That shirt is fucking awesome
Jagger eaton does them
I really love this channel
Sick shirt
Danny Way left school when he was in the 9th grade
Jeff Wright
Well Danny way and Daewon Song are not really your average pro..
Colin McKay can do the backflip. Or at least he used to be able to.
But can you skate?
1. We stand sideways
2. Not very hard
I think it's more that backflip's are an ugly gimmicky looking trick. Inverted spins like McTwists look way better.
Dude there is more backflip options that didn't really answer
