How To Treat Minor "Fishy" Injuries - Damaged Scales, Split Fins, Bruises, Scrapes

  • Folks, as it goes in life, we all get minor scrapes, cuts, bruises, and scratches and our fish are no different. Fish can get injured like we can, but when it's simple injuries and not a diseases, what can we do to treat it and potentially prevent them?
    I've received quite a few questions on this topic recently, so I'd like to share what has worked for me over the years. While the traditional "fixes:" Melafix, Pimafix, and Bettafix has never worked for me (they do for some hobbyists), my go to is Kordon Fish Protector. I'll explain why in this video and show a recent example of Kordon Fish Protector's effectiveness. I hope this video is helpful to you,
    Keep tankin!
    Mike

    My betta really messed himself up. He got stuck in a decoration and all his fins are basically gone, and he has a massive gash on his back. I thought he wasn't gonna make it, but it's now been 3 days and he's swimming upright again and accepting food. I'm astounded at how quickly he seems to be recovering. For the record, yes I removed that decoration from the tank.

      Rod - thanks for the kind words and continued support! Kordon has great stuff. I'm not sure why Fish Protector seems to be a "kept secret" in the hobby, so I wanted to spread the word. It's really great stuff and not much out there like it. Glad the video was helpful!

    Melafix cured my chili rasbora's onset fin rot (if that was what it was). All of my fish are doing completely fine and LOVE their tank now they've gotten used to it, they have adjusted to my presence although they still school up and glass surfing if I look for too long. I literally cannot see them on a night as they all have their own territories and relax spots so I know where to find some of them, I actually thought they'd managed to escape from the tank through the tiny gap between the lid and the tank. I also appear to have a nice ratio of males to females, I think I have around 4 males and 8 females and I don't think I've seen the males fighting yet although there is a male which is way more vibrant than the others so I think he may be the alpha of the group or may spend most of his time in the dark areas of the plants and so his colours are more vibrant. I expect that there may be other issues that arise in the tank but I'm ready for them, especially because I need to move the tank down stairs since it's next to a window and I have the hottest room in the house so I could really do with having the curtains open and having fresh air into my room since it is affecting my sleep. Do you have any ideas/tips on how I should relocate my tank? Should I remove the fish from the tank and completely drain it of water? Do you have any other suggestions?
    If you do read this comment I would like to congratulate you since it is rather long and am surprised you haven't fallen asleep yet, thanks for the help!

      Arenos - glad to hear the rasboras are doing well! Sure. Since it's a small tank - here is what I would do: Don't completely drain it. Drain the tank about halfway, put the water in a large bucket....remove all fish/plants/rocks and put them in the same bucket with the tank water. Then drain the water down until you have about an inch of water left (drain that water into another bucket). Keep the substrate in the tank. You should be able to pick up the tank with the substrate and an inch of water in it, carry that downstairs (Get Help If You Need It!) Once you have it where you want it downstairs, replace the rocks/plants, then pour the water back in from the 2nd bucket (the one without the fish). Put the fish back in, then fill the tank with the water from the first bucket... fill it up so the tank is about 70% full with the old water, then add 30% new, conditioned water. So as not to upset your beneficial bacteria colony, no need to totally drain the tank of water :) Also - you can put your filter media in the second bucket of water to move it downstairs...Hopefully that helps!!

    Kribs get real territorial when defending a nest. I'm surprised the pleco was able to get in his cave at all.

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Anthony - they sure do...it's amazing. These two are still learning how to be parents. This is only the 3rd batch, so I suspect they may defend more in the future. This really wasn't a great spot they chose. What I love is that they might uproot plants and dig and make a mess, but once the babies hatch, they put all the substrate right back and fill up their holes....it's like they were never there, so at least they have impeccable etiquette ;)

      Happy Holidays! Yes it was! I tried to treat and save Jasper-Blu after his beautiful fins got caught in the small openings of the pump in the bottom of the tank! For the past months I had him, he would swim past it or not go near it! Lol He fought his best the later part Saturday but made his transition later Sunday evening! I was truly heartbroken. He was my charming and handsome betta! I think he went through stress and shock after this fins got caught!

    I instantly put general cure in when my fish had some scales coming off, I’m now convinced that he just hit his head, is the general cure going to hurt him?

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It shouldn’t hurt him at all but general cure is more for parasitic diseases. If he just hit his head (it happens, believe me you aren’t alone), depending on how bad he hit it, I would use something like Seachem stress guard, which works a lot like a liquid bandage. It helps protect the wound. If it is a really bad cut or scrape and you are worried about infection, you can treat with an antibiotic like erythromycin or Kanaplex at the same time you use stress guard. But if it is really minor, some stress guard should do the trick 👍

    I use half the recommended amount of aquarium salt on my water changes, if i switch to this product, how long do you suggest i wait till i am able to use this? (After i stop using salt)

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use it at the same time 👍. The salt won’t have an effect on it. This is kind of like a liquid bandage for the fish. The salt with help treat for any bacterial infections - another alternative is Seachem Stress Guard. Also a good product to use. Both work well and won’t have any adverse effects with the salt. So it would actually be a benefit to have both the salt and the Kordon or Stress Guard working for you. Hope that helps!

    Hello from Australia
    I came home from a holiday to find my Driftwood Catfish had wedged himself into a small ornament I had in the tank.
    (The fish were all looked after during my time away)
    He has rather nasty wounds on his side and belly.
    I placed him in a quarantine tank and treated him with Melafix.
    I was wondering how the processes goes for open wounds and how you know it's healing properly?
    What do I look for in relation to infection?
    Chernavska is one of the fish I have a bit of a bond with. So if I can save him I really want to. It will be devastating if he dies.
    Thank ypuin advance.

    My orandas just went through their first spawning season and the female is pretty beat up (a lot of missing scales). Will this stuff help her, and also is there a way I can prevent her from getting hirt again in the future?

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kaite - So sorry for the late reply here. I don't have much experience with orandas, but the Kordon Fish Protector should help. As tto whether this might happen to her again, I'm not sure how aggressive Orandas can be when they breed or spawn. Sometimes, we can't prevent it. Golden wonder killis are like that. My males beat the females up so much trying to breed, I had to remove the females....there unfortunately wasn't anything I could do....

One died in the hospital tank, and the only one has missing scale patches. And her fin is torn apart. I’ve been doing aquarium salt water baths. Are those helpful?
