It reminded me of "Rebecca" Alfred Hitchcock's first movie released in 1940. It features a huge gothic manor called Manderley. The interiors were entirely done on soundstages and with painted backgrounds and the exterior shots were actually a miniature built on a table.
The amount of care that went into the sets, costumes, etc. of this show is so evident, and it really adds to the immersive quality I love about good period dramas. Bravo to all those involved! :)
I love this show. The only thing I don’t like about it is having to wait for weekly episodes. I wish I could just binge the whole season in one sitting. I predict it will go on for 5-6 seasons.
@@kendramills2138 that’s not how it works, and Netflix has demonstrated it. Even a hybrid model of releasing half the episodes up front and the other half weekly has proven to be successful.

Doing it is this way they get their money’s worth, notoriety, & longevity. The show would not be talked about as long as it would if they did it how you stated, that’s just a fact.
Can you imagine the world we would live in, if everyone attacked their jobs with the dedication and attention to detail, the costume and set designers of these type of shows have? They must be truly remarkable people. It's a shame, we rarely hear and see very much about the people 'behind the scenes'. They really deserve just as much attention as the actors and director.
I had wondered if the interior of the Russell's home was a green screen. How nice to see it is a set that was meticulously designed! Well done! Very beautiful set design!

One of the things that made Downton such a success was the meticulous attention to detail in the sets and costumes, all of which help to transport the viewers to a different age. A very unauthentic detail however, is the absence of horses dung in the street. At that time city streets would be strewn with horse dung, not pristine and clean like in the show.
My only issue with the sets are they are too sparse for what would’ve been decorated in far excess as was part of being fashionable about the gilded age, thus showing off your wealth by the large amount of items on display. The Van Rhijn household for one as old money is vastly under-furnished. I was quite taken back by what the production designer said, basically that if they did it full period accurate it would distract the audience as if our contemporary eyes couldn’t handle it, or so he said. I find it funny as Downton Abbey was full period accurate in its setting with a lot of real locations fully furnished and while it’s own character in its right, it never distracted from the storyline or the characters acting. I love the costumes but the sets look unfinished. I hope they remedy this in season 2. I completely agree on how overly pristine the neighborhood is though in a somewhat wealthier area of town they would have street sweepers though to at least keep the dung to a minimum.

The Gilded Age is absolute perfection. I was wondering if I'll ever love a series as much as I love Downton Abbey and than this comes out. Am watching it on repeat, my husband is worried 😅😆
@Lucien I was not saying it's perfect as in it is a 100% accurate. Certainly not, Marian kissed her man in broad daylight in the park. That was not a thing in that time. I just find it perfect in every way otherwise, love everything about it. 😊

The Frick museum on Fifth Avenue was once a private house. There are other castle-like buildings still in existence in New York City. Also, Brooklyn was a separate city back then with beautiful brownstone houses still there.
