      Back in 1991 92 93 Tuesday night fights used to come to the Palace in Auburn hills many times a year and when I was about 12 years old I met Sean O'Grady and I was in shock because it was a guy on TV and he was such a great fighter. He honestly was such a nice guy signing boxing magazine and saying encouraging words to me I'll never forget that.

    O'Grady was the very definition of toughness. He was so gritty and determined,.....you'd find yourself nearly tearing up watching him take punishment while dishing out as good as he got. The man really did leave his mark in boxing for sure.

      Absolutely correct..If I recall,the Ref was about to stop the fight after inspecting a cut on Watts eye&then all of sudden he stumbles forward(with no sneakiness or finesse at all) and gives O'Grady a "Glasgow Kiss" and split His Head open!
      ..It was ridiculous how the Scot wasn't disqualified!

    • @Shinobi33
      @Shinobi33 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But even after they stopped the fight wasn't Sean ahead on the scorecards? I don't understand how Watt won. Were the rules for the fight different?

      @@Shinobi33 Prizefighting (whether someone's a avid fan or not), has always been crooked!!.. And a hometown champ will always have many advantages!.
      So basically they picked Sean O'Grady at short notice,assuming it w/b a cert for Watt,but then Sean O decided not to stay with the script&Adlib,&then JW was in serious trouble!!

Didn't look like a boxer but turned out he was one hell-of-a fighter who had a lot of talent and heart. I always liked watching him. Thanks Rich---this one just really made my day, cause I love Sean O'Grady! I'm originally from Philadelphia, but I moved to Hawai'i a long time ago...I always used to love watching Sean & Al do the commentary on Tuesday Night Fights...one time, I was back visiting family in Philly, with my wife, who was Native Hawaiian...we went out to lunch at a nice place down by the Delaware River...my wife came from a family of fighters, & her brother was Golden Gloves Champ for the state of Hawai'i...she knew how much I loved Sean O'Grady...the place was really busy & we were waiting to be seated...then, from around the corner, comes Sean O'Grady walking back to his table from the bathroom...I quickly & quietly pointed out Sean to my wife as he was passing by...so, my wife told me to say hi to him, which I did...I'll never forget how friendly he was...I told him that we were in-town from Hawai'i, visiting my family...Sean was in-town, because they were broadcasting Tuesday Night Fights from the Blue Horizon that night...he said to us, "Come over to my table with me & say hi to Al & the crew." So, we walked back to his table & briefly met everyone, & they were all very hospitable to us as well...naturally, we told everyone to come visit us in Hawai'i, if they ever got the chance...anyway, they were all a class act! This was a great video on Sean & his family, & I'm glad to hear The Champ is doing well! Aloha, Bill

      Watt headbutted O'Grady intentionally. And the referee screwed up by allowing Watt's corner to commit a technical foul in applying pressure to Watt's cut during the break. Corner's are only allowed to attend to cuts or other needs in between rounds. It was definitely highway robbery.

    O'Grady was a very good fighter who was able to become Champ. Looking at these clips makes me think he could have been a great champion if he was around today. His grit and conditioning were unquestionable, his offence above average, his defense had potential and his chin was adequate. Can't criticize his dad (RIP) because that was different time and in this ruthless sport, he wanted to protect his son. Perhaps if Sean and his dad were around today, they would have brought in different defensive specialists to enhance his defensive ability as well as get him better sparing and different looks in all the great gyms that exist today. His name is forever recorded in the history books as Lightweight Champion of the World, something that very few can claim especially at that time. Saw some these fights when they happened and the one that bothered me the most was the one with Verderosa because it signaled the end, and I did not think the Heat was on his level. Was really good seeing these clips again because memory sometimes fades and now, I am reminded of how good he was. Thanks for your superior contributions to my favorite sport. You are batting a thousand.

    I love to see families working together like this. Sean literally had his whole family in his corner. He was one of my favorite analysts growing up and a bit before my time as a fighter but saw some, the guy had heart and determination along with talent, it's not a surprise that he took the WBA lightweight title. BUT I must say, once he got to that big championship level, his dad and mom should have realized they were out of their depth when it came to managing and match making. A 17 year old kid shouldn't have been in the ring with that version of Danny Red Lopez who was a hell of a fighter in a division that was teeming with talent and had guys at super feather just waiting to take the step up as well. they should have had a co-promoter or brought in someone more experienced as a match maker. Just my humble opinion. Still, it worked out as Sean had a hell of a career boxing AND after boxing - so obviously they did some things RIGHT.

    Sean O' Grady had guts and heart! Very entertaining fighter! Glad he retired and had a successful career as a color commentator on Tuesday night fights! You know he started so young as a pro. Probably too young. Also an Arguello vs. a prime O'Grady would have been fun...prime O'Grady vs. Mancini would have been brutal!

    I was in my mid teens when Tuesday night fights would come on and would always look foward to watching the fights always knew about Sean Ogrady reading Ring magazine and other articles but never seen footage it always seemed to me like no one gave him props made him seem like he was over rated or that he couldn’t fight but seeing his footage here he had good technique and he could fight and was tough as nails props to O Grady for being a champion in the 80’s which is probably the toughest era in boxing history

    It's crazy and also indicative of what a tough sport boxing is when a fighters punch resistance can be shot at such an early age ...some fighters are better at clinching when their hurt and are even wiley enough to lose s point for it but others just can't seem to hold on and they then try to fight their way out of trouble which rarely ends well .
    He was a tough kid but in some fighters the body can only take so much but at least he stopped with his faculties...great video

  • @kingalexander2704
    @kingalexander2704 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I was a big fan of O'Grady from the start but I saw early on that his career would be short because of the mismanagement of his parents. Had his father only handled his training and allowed a more competent person to manage him I believe Sean would've been far more successful. Too much family drama behind the scenes.

      Jim Watt went on to become Britain’s Worst Ever Boxing Commentator after his fight career ended. To be fair, - headbutting, (under Glasgow Rules), barely constitutes an offence. A stab wound - “of not greater depth than two inches” and “requiring five or less stitches” will occasionally see a point deduction but not if it breaks the “flow of the square go”.

    Looking back on his fights I did not realize how big Sean was compared to most the lightweights of his era. His first title shot he blew it by not protecting himself and he took a deliberate headbutt that robbed him of the title.
    I love how his family stood up to Arum and his crooked contracts but his loss in defending his made up title was a bad loss. He was not prepared to fight a southpaw that in my opinion Sean should have beaten. I would love to have seen him and Howard Davis Jr. go at it. Skill wise Howard was better but Sean was much better puncher.
    Sean absolutely was one of the best announcers of all time. USA Network should bring this back I know I looked forward to Tuesday Night at the fights.
    Sean did it right...he got his and got out.

    Nothing straight about Pat O’Grady. Nothing. One Mexican fought Sean four or five times in different parts of Oklahoma, under different names, when it came time to pay the fighter, O’Grady called the immigration on them. He was a scoundrel.
    He thought he was slick, got a 15 or 16 foot ring to fight Howard Davis. But Davis pulled out at the last minute and they brought in Andy Gannigan, a top 50 puncher in Ring Magazine history, destroyed Sean in 2 rounds.
    The small ring was supposed to keep Davis from running. It instead got Sean obliterated. I can go on.
