Thank you Rich for bringing back the memory of Gino Perez. That fight was the very epitome of guts and toughness in the ring. My friends and I were regulars at the Felt Forum cards and wars like that weren't unusual. Rest in peace for a true tough guy, Mr. Gino Perez.
I watched lots of fights on msg channel from the felt forum with announcers John Condon,Tony Paige and others also.but this bout would have been tough to top.even at the felt forum.
Man that fight was hard to watch. I'm at a loss for words... The toughness of both boxers was incredible. Thank you for presenting this Rich, well done.
Just absolutely and utter brutality. Another great representation of yet, another Lion. I always almost shed a tear when I see these guys walking through the valley of death and the fire,...all for honor and victory. Just a different breed among us these men are. R.I.P. Lion Warrior.
What a stud. Never backed off, never quit, never stayed down, and even mortally wounded he stayed conscious just long enough to congratulate the man who had bested him. That's the heart of a gladiator, a warlord, and indeed a Lion. We all die sometime, but this man died WELL. Nothing can be taken from him in regards to his effort, courage, skill, or character by the manner of his passing. Strength and honor.
This is why I both love and hate boxing. People giving everything, often getting badly hurt to the roar of the crowd. Yet, where else can you find people pushed to the very limits, against the odds and win? A true warrior. A sad and lonely way to go out. RIP. Thanks again, Rich.
As both a boxing fan and a boxer, I really enjoy your channel Rich. I love hearing these in depth stories about "forgotten boxers." By shedding light on boxers like Gino Perez, we learn and remember these ring warriors.
I’ve always been hungry for older stories of past boxers. But it’s so hard to follow those stories that didn’t get main stream attention. Thank u for filling this gap for us.

Sad, sad story once again, like so many times in the boxing world. I felt like - because I kept getting cut - my trainers gave up on me too soon but, I'm glad I got out when I did. SO MANY wind up getting neurological damage, even the very best; Wilfred Benitez, Gerald McClellan, etc.
This is exactly why I cringe when so called fight fans boo a fighter into the ring. Boxing is the only sport in which you can legally kill your opponent with no fear of prosecution. When a fighter enters the ring, no matter how fit he is he is putting his life on the line and people should show some respect even if they are fans of the other guy in the ring. RIP Mr Perez a true warrior who trained hard and fought hard to support his family. I hope you are sitting at Gods table.
I've always wondered what it is about the human race that drives us to do things that we know can seriously hurt or kill us? 😟 But, that same thing also leads us to greatness.
The referee should have stopped it earlier... This man was just to tough for his own body.his heart could take more than his chin.I've watched a ton of fights from that time and never heard of either fighter. This fight to me was better than Hagler vs Hearns and yet they probably only made about 10k each,if that, it was 1983 however. This was a grueling tough fight.it was a hard watch.I can't ever watch this again. It was just to brutal.

It seemed pretty clear that Gino was not hurting Cruz with any of his punches.....and he may have been winning on 2 judges' cards by the 7th round but it was very apparent to me that Cruz was simply hurting Perez too often, basically beating him down. Something Hagler would do to most everyone he fought....That said, Perez was one tough dude to hang in there like he did.....so sad the outcome :(
I remember this fight well. Just tragic. Boxing at it's best is also at it's most brutal. Like the man said, we all know it could happen to us. But it's always the other guy. At least, that's what you tell yourself.

RIP I always feel bad for the other fighter too - imagine killing somebody you respect on accident while you were trying to hurt him on purpose? Such a weird and brutal sport.
