"they rub on rosin...to keep the bow from slipping off of the strings" NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. anyone who plays violin knows that they need to be rosined to create friction on the strings to produce sound, right?
well friction is what causes something not to slip. If the bow just slid across with no friction, aka slipping, then it would make no noise. He was right in saying that, although he could have worded it better.
It transfers (conducts) the vibrations from the bridge to the back of the Violin. The back of the Violin then resonates and the body of the instrument acts to amplify the sound. Different kinds of wood resonate differently. If you ever have a tuning fork or a little wind up music box listen to it when you are holding it, then listen to it when the bottom is pressed against a piece of wood, like a drawer. The audio will be louder and fuller than before.
@@courtneycallis1245 Oh, I've seen the whole thing. The "destroy-a-violin pranks" were the worst. Even if they were super cheap ones, that wouldn't make it any less painful. With rock music, I don't care for the "smash your guitar" trend Pete Townshend (arguably) started.
Yes, with any stringed acoustic instrument, the shape and composition (what its made from) can vary the sound. A Viola is almost identical to the Violin, but sounds notably different, because it is larger. Cellos, are much bigger and have much lower pitch still. So changing volume as well as shape will have an effect.
3:41 These are Basically Flatwound Strings which came around 1874 to replace the Gut Strings on Bowed Stringed Instruments because they last longer, hold tune better, and are easier to bow.
that was intresting. i just started playing violin myself. i love the sound. i think ive picked it all up pretty quick except for vibrato which seems alot different from how its done on a guitar. im looking foward to mastering it and using it on a song. its such a great instrument :D
you'll have to go to a violin making school to be certified to be-able to make them.. and i believe you also have to know the basics of playing the violin to graduate
***** I know a violin maker that passes his violins to a soloist to be played and check the violin for its tone. He doesnt play the violin all that well
One day my violin fell down and I was crying because I was to afraid to lift it up again. Luckily 'only' one of those 'little zylinders' fell out. The violin survived.
Also nice video (even though it brought up horrible memories). Though you did miss out on the point in history, when something changed in how violins were made, which is why old violins are very loud in big rooms while being not that loud on shorter distances. New ones don't show this phenomenom and nobody knows why ...
haha, well, i've made a start on one, whether it'll be done before christmas, i'm not so sure, but it's coming along pretty well so far, just gotta figure out ho to shape and hollow it out then it should be pretty good from then on in
the particular one he is making in the video i would guess probably won't be too great quality. it looked like he was going pretty fast with the ribbing and planing, even the most minor disturbance can make quite a huge difference (with those)
I so want to relearn to play. I have one but I have to trade it in because it's too small. I'm hoping that if I wait till the grade schools get close to going back into session, the local violin shop will have back to school specials.
That's some damn strong glue! It must be custom designed to soak into those wood fibers for maximum adherence. Anyone else slightly anxious about the possibility of those high tension strings lined up with your face snapping? I squint with each bounce of the bow and pluck of pizzicato.
Well, it probably won't be flimsy. some cheap violins are made of plywood instead of maple or another tonewood. You might check to see if the fingerboard is real ebony or if it is painted black. If it sounds good and feels comfortable that is the most important two qualities.
I always wondered how the heck you could build a thing like violins but now i know. Violin aint music. nono. Its piece of art and poetry. Its so beautiful
around 0:38 is acutally incorrect to some degree Stardivari and Gauneri and a few other makers of the past used nails for the neck but yes nowadays it is most common to only see glue used.

Fun background music. Let's celebrate this beautiful instrument with a Casio keyboard demo song from 1986.
Heraclitean HAHAHAHA
lol
it was originally rejected for a porn scene.
What could be better? Mozart? Niccoló Paganini?
@@lanceroberthough1275 yes, because those composers use the violin for their pieces.
Then you're left with a regular ol' Plumbus
Background music isnt even violin XD
Actually it's to accompany what the person is saying about how they make the instrument
Anyone just hugging their violin while watching this?
yep, me. just comparing
***** ??? ^-^
Peace Yin yes, yes I did. Me talking to my violin: DONT LISTEN TO THE VILOET. YOU ARE REAL!!
Lol
No. The bridge is missing.
i was XD
The to slots are called F HOLS
fuck holes?
Lol
I prefer to call them h'ears...
Because they're shaped like an f...
😧

I thought the same thing.
naturegirl92584 well its all the orchestra that needs rosin
Rosin looks like cocaine
Wow! I learned that they can make the violin in 4 minutes and 51 seconds
Who are my fellow violinists out there?
HEEEEERRRREEE
Meeeeeeee!
I play clarinet, But also a little bit of violin
Yo
Right here!
Why the he'll am I watching this???
My dad makes violins 😂😂😂😂
bruh me lmao

stop right there
not all violins are shiny
mine is matte
*t r i g g e r e d*
The real shit is shiny. You’ve been scammed.
I prefer matte because they look older and more professional in my opinion
And also shiny ones don't look great on stage
nootmoon it depends on how the luthier makes it
love the violin
"gypsy music"
+Alastair Smith because nomatic
I love the violin, been playing it for almost 3 years, and I LOVE IT!
It's been eleven years so it's been 14 years since you started how's it been?
I LOVE the violin, and I even did a PowerPoint on it! Two of my classmates play the violin! Great video.
I’ve always loved the sound of a violin. I don’t play one, but I love listening to it in classical music
It's no wonder violins are so expensive. Well, quality ones, that is.
Watch tosetviolin watching violin fails. I dare you. I couldn’t make it through the first four clips. Painful 😣 very.

I seriously had never thought that violins are handmade :\
I thought the bass bar was never glued. I thought its carved.

wow that is awesome! i've played the violin for so long but i've never really thought about how they make one.
Love this show!! so educational and inspiring!!

how good are you with it now?
Woooww :'D So amazingg ! Such a BEAUTIFUL instrument
Wow! I played the violin when I was in school so it's really interesting to see how they are made :D
what level do I need to unlock the violin making ability?
you'll have to go to a violin making school to be certified to be-able to make them.. and i believe you also have to know the basics of playing the violin to graduate
xMinimalistic u dont have to
***** I know a violin maker that passes his violins to a soloist to be played and check the violin for its tone. He doesnt play the violin all that well
lol, and @xMinimalistic do you really have to be certified to make violins? or am i missing internet sarcasm again?

all by hand too... now THAT"S amazing!
An absolute work of art.
thats so cool i nvr knew it was so precise to make a violin
Making a violin is hard work because it's a long job. Very difficult.
Love it!
Well good luck dude, I hope it turns out good
When I first got my violin, the bow was so un-rosined ( if that's a word) that it just slipped off the strings and sounded like a cat dying.
No, the horses just gets a haircut from their tail.

2:52 "Withstanding Centuries of Violinist's fingering" "f Holes" and "g string".... violins are a bit perverted (o.o)
Did you hear him say f holes
yep, thats what they're called.
Yeah that was funny. :-)
if you think about it the wrong way, it's really don't and disturbing
lmao yea i giggled for some reason
It's not really that funny. They're shaped like an f. It's what they're called, because it's what they are.
I played for two years as well and now I want to pick it back up again. It is boring to learn but it pays off.
I find this really interesting I dont know a whole lot about violins but i work for the oldest guitar manufacturer in the US
that... was awesome
I wish they had explained more about what those circular holes were.
the particular one he is making in the video i would guess probably won't be too great quality. it looked like he was going pretty fast with the ribbing and planing, even the most minor disturbance can make quite a huge difference (with those)
Any other viola players watching this?
Amazing!
wonderful
What is the background music called?
I had quite a shock when my bridge fell off once. Just put it back on and retuned it, but it gave me a big scare! 😂
I think he meant that it allows the bow hair to grip the strings to make them vibrate so it doest just move over them without friction.
Impressive!
This is so amazing omg omg
I so want to relearn to play. I have one but I have to trade it in because it's too small. I'm hoping that if I wait till the grade schools get close to going back into session, the local violin shop will have back to school specials.
wow...knowing my violin went through all that is scary lmao
those numb chucks drove me nuts
violins are sometimes used in metal music too btw
Amazing (:
he/she didn't even ask if he/she could bomb it
This is AWESOME!!!!
=D
this is so amazing
In-country music, it's called a fiddle
btw ... the finest ebony comes from borneo, indonesia ... it's really durable ... people use them to make houses there
It's much harder than you think. Much harder than a guitar. Everything is very delicate and needs to be done perfectly
so many thoughts went through my head when i read your comment
Online orchestra where you at.
I have the viola and this is cool to watch!!

Awesome
I now know why violins are so damn expensive...
now i love to play violin even more now that i know that the bow is also made of my favorite gem stone pearl :D
@HIMADESU223 i finished my project now but thx for offering to help :)
*2:50** that's what she said😏*

This is so satisfying idk y ❤
What an artist beautefull
wow, I play violin and I saw this vid so now I know how it's made. looks harder than I thought but cool! =)
You must give the best gifts XD
woah that's why theres a kinda obvious split in the wood on my violin....
I wish I could learn to play the Violin T^T Lessons are too expensive and so would getting a violin D:
While this video was uploaded I didn't even knew about instruments
wow I never knew and I play violin
you put rosin on it xD lol, i like how you described the sound xDxD
I always wondered how the heck you could build a thing like violins but now i know.
Violin aint music. nono. Its piece of art and poetry. Its so beautiful
Omg beautiful
id be cool if they left the violin unfinished
Wait, so they show how to make the bows, but when it comes to brass instruments they don't show anything about the mouthpiece?
"You like Jazz?"
