It transfers (conducts) the vibrations from the bridge to the back of the Violin. The back of the Violin then resonates and the body of the instrument acts to amplify the sound. Different kinds of wood resonate differently. If you ever have a tuning fork or a little wind up music box listen to it when you are holding it, then listen to it when the bottom is pressed against a piece of wood, like a drawer. The audio will be louder and fuller than before.
"they rub on rosin...to keep the bow from slipping off of the strings" NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. anyone who plays violin knows that they need to be rosined to create friction on the strings to produce sound, right?
well friction is what causes something not to slip. If the bow just slid across with no friction, aka slipping, then it would make no noise. He was right in saying that, although he could have worded it better.
3:41 These are Basically Flatwound Strings which came around 1874 to replace the Gut Strings on Bowed Stringed Instruments because they last longer, hold tune better, and are easier to bow.
Yes, with any stringed acoustic instrument, the shape and composition (what its made from) can vary the sound. A Viola is almost identical to the Violin, but sounds notably different, because it is larger. Cellos, are much bigger and have much lower pitch still. So changing volume as well as shape will have an effect.
that was intresting. i just started playing violin myself. i love the sound. i think ive picked it all up pretty quick except for vibrato which seems alot different from how its done on a guitar. im looking foward to mastering it and using it on a song. its such a great instrument :D
@@courtneycallis1245 Oh, I've seen the whole thing. The "destroy-a-violin pranks" were the worst. Even if they were super cheap ones, that wouldn't make it any less painful. With rock music, I don't care for the "smash your guitar" trend Pete Townshend (arguably) started.
you'll have to go to a violin making school to be certified to be-able to make them.. and i believe you also have to know the basics of playing the violin to graduate
***** I know a violin maker that passes his violins to a soloist to be played and check the violin for its tone. He doesnt play the violin all that well
@ralph5656 Right handed is alot more common, so you can make em in large amounts, but left handed prolly are made in pretty low quantity, so price is higher... as you know, buy one bow for like 10euros, buy 10bows for like 60-70euros....
haha, well, i've made a start on one, whether it'll be done before christmas, i'm not so sure, but it's coming along pretty well so far, just gotta figure out ho to shape and hollow it out then it should be pretty good from then on in
around 0:38 is acutally incorrect to some degree Stardivari and Gauneri and a few other makers of the past used nails for the neck but yes nowadays it is most common to only see glue used.
@baccdaggthr i play a left handed violin right handed...i feel uncomfortable playing right handed violins even though i am right handed, luckily i was passed a lefty violin that was my great great grandfathers!
I so want to relearn to play. I have one but I have to trade it in because it's too small. I'm hoping that if I wait till the grade schools get close to going back into session, the local violin shop will have back to school specials.
the particular one he is making in the video i would guess probably won't be too great quality. it looked like he was going pretty fast with the ribbing and planing, even the most minor disturbance can make quite a huge difference (with those)
One day my violin fell down and I was crying because I was to afraid to lift it up again. Luckily 'only' one of those 'little zylinders' fell out. The violin survived.
Also nice video (even though it brought up horrible memories). Though you did miss out on the point in history, when something changed in how violins were made, which is why old violins are very loud in big rooms while being not that loud on shorter distances. New ones don't show this phenomenom and nobody knows why ...
@ralph5656 I happen to be left handed and play a 'right handed' violin. I cannot imagine playing with a left handed violin. that would feel so weird now that I've been playing with a right handed one. Lefties are sort of at an advantage when playing with a right handed violin. FYI people, yes it's called and F hole. Deal with it. I wonder if someone named it that on purpose -.-
That's some damn strong glue! It must be custom designed to soak into those wood fibers for maximum adherence. Anyone else slightly anxious about the possibility of those high tension strings lined up with your face snapping? I squint with each bounce of the bow and pluck of pizzicato.
Well, it probably won't be flimsy. some cheap violins are made of plywood instead of maple or another tonewood. You might check to see if the fingerboard is real ebony or if it is painted black. If it sounds good and feels comfortable that is the most important two qualities.
It's a half hour program and they cover several topics... three or four. They only give each subject a very overview treatment, but they are good about covering the processes beginning to end. This must be the least expensive program in the universe to produce. There are no actors or personalities 'trying their hand' at any of the steps, just a camera, the craftsman, and then mixdown and narration. In some ways I find that preferable to programs of similar formats.
haha, i do try to give people good gifts :P i build guitars and wanted to have a go at a violin, my girlfriend used to play, i have no idea how to play one, so i may as well make one for her while doing something i want to try at the same time :P it's still in the making, just need to hollow it out and cut the F holes before i glue it all together and start finishing it, it looks pretty awesome so far, hopefully it'll be done by christmas still =p
I always wondered how the heck you could build a thing like violins but now i know. Violin aint music. nono. Its piece of art and poetry. Its so beautiful
Oh believe me, it is very hard. I watched my grandfather build 3. (He was building a 4th, but he died before he finished it). He hand carved them, and I play the ones he made. It took months of very hard work as well. If you want to learn to make a violin, read all about it, then try.
i wanna ask,, if there is a violin for a left handed, who doesnt want to practice a violin facing on the left.. coz im very comfortable facing on the right..
It really isn't that simple to say if it would be no good, because you can get one plenty good to learn on for that price. Check craigs list and local violin shops if there are any near you. Used is the way to go at that price range, but be careful if it is cracked... certain cracks are really bad, make sure the neck is on cracked or the back near the neck. Umm, you will have to get a bow too... and a decent bow will be around 50 dollars... Good luck ^_^
Yeah, that's the technical term. I'm a violinist in an orchestra myself, and my friends and I always joke around with it. We put the bows in the F holes, and because we're super mature we laugh our asses off about it X)
@interactionbeebo Defy cheap because iv been toying with the idea of getting a violin and most of the decent ones I saw where pretty expensive like 400-500 dollars 0o (The violin would not be my first instrument btw)

Fun background music. Let's celebrate this beautiful instrument with a Casio keyboard demo song from 1986.
Heraclitean HAHAHAHA
lol
it was originally rejected for a porn scene.
What could be better? Mozart? Niccoló Paganini?
@@lanceroberthough1275 yes, because those composers use the violin for their pieces.

Rosin looks like cocaine

I’ve always loved the sound of a violin. I don’t play one, but I love listening to it in classical music
I LOVE the violin, and I even did a PowerPoint on it! Two of my classmates play the violin! Great video.
I love the violin, been playing it for almost 3 years, and I LOVE IT!
It's been eleven years so it's been 14 years since you started how's it been?
Anyone just hugging their violin while watching this?
yep, me. just comparing
***** ??? ^-^
Peace Yin yes, yes I did. Me talking to my violin: DONT LISTEN TO THE VILOET. YOU ARE REAL!!
Lol
No. The bridge is missing.
i was XD
Very skilled craftsmen. Thanks

love the violin
It's no wonder violins are so expensive. Well, quality ones, that is.

Making a violin is hard work because it's a long job. Very difficult.

Wow! I learned that they can make the violin in 4 minutes and 51 seconds
I seriously had never thought that violins are handmade :\
stop right there
not all violins are shiny
mine is matte
*t r i g g e r e d*
The real shit is shiny. You’ve been scammed.
I prefer matte because they look older and more professional in my opinion
And also shiny ones don't look great on stage
nootmoon it depends on how the luthier makes it

all by hand too... now THAT"S amazing!

I played for two years as well and now I want to pick it back up again. It is boring to learn but it pays off.
I thought the bass bar was never glued. I thought its carved.
What is the background music called?
btw ... the finest ebony comes from borneo, indonesia ... it's really durable ... people use them to make houses there

I had quite a shock when my bridge fell off once. Just put it back on and retuned it, but it gave me a big scare! 😂
thats so cool i nvr knew it was so precise to make a violin
When I first got my violin, the bow was so un-rosined ( if that's a word) that it just slipped off the strings and sounded like a cat dying.
