    This is absolutely fantastic. I've seen so many of this style of build but they're on such huge trucks that for me become impractical. This is perfectly sized and so practically partioned. Excellent work!

      Thank you Tatias, I had a bigger 13 ton MAN truck before this one and often got stuck in small Northern vials or on bridges that did not carry the weight - so that one is perfect.. Thanks for watching and safe travels! cheers Simon

      I never see somebody coming out of the living box of those kind of trucks. They are always already outside and take the staircase out. Do they jump out ? What in an emergency situation... in the dark ? I travel alone, the last thing I need is some injury on my foots or legs . Crawling trough the cabin ? Why then not always crawling in and out ? Once I made a box with a door in two parts met folding steps on the down part. This time I made a strong door, with an elevator on it. I go out that way, if I stay somewhere the platform of that elevator is almost up and there is put a staircase on, that is kept outside. It's 1,40 m high . to get in and I have a second door as a " screen door " so the outdoor can be open when I'm in or out and stil privacy . So, I come out in the morning, go down with the elevator , put the elevator up again, staircase on the platform en go in and out with that staicase. The door makes 90 ° with the wall. 🙂 ( elevator, folding platform and folding side protection so going down between that protection and the wall,/wheel of the truck. Platform is a grill to clean the shoes ) O, I builded the box and everything in or out ,myself.... again, I have to know everything, being alone on the road and I never use mechanics from garages, they are selden just at that spot where I can have a probleme... 🙂 Nice truck by the way !

      @@rangemog21 thanks, great comment and solution to your problem. I actually asked the same question you were asking. How do I get out when the stairs are not down. But, I can easily get out without the stairs pulled out, by simply taking two steps down to the ground by holding on to the sides of the door. Thanks for watching and safe travels to you!

      @@simonjourneyman So, the revers way to get in, steps out, going in, on the knees to put the steps back in place. On the knees, steps out going down, steps in, back in place. Looks safe to me and all we do is most a compromise and personal opinion. If you go to a truck building compagny and you ask for an elevator on the door, they send you away as a fool. because nobody ever has asked that and they don't offer that themselves. I had never seen one compagny who offer the folding staircase on the door,so why should they come up with an elevator.... 🙂 A door with steps on it, a lot of small planes have it for ages. A door in two parts and that close correctly and can hold people is ofcorse complex, more then a frame around a sandwich plate. My doors have no outside locks, nothing visible to start to put stuff in with damages by people who wanne go inside when the owner is not present. It looks all verry expensive.... and safety to protect it is not a subject. Or, five heavy locks and no protection for car windows... I ame a builder and an owner. The last thing I want that somebody was inside my home. It's an unpleasent feeling, as long as one have to live in it again.... I write this in general, not for your truck only, don't misunderstand me, I write from the point that people who see your truck, will thinck about going on adventures themselves. So the more owners share theyre toughst on things, the better... in my humble opinion.... 🙂 Times are changing, for a lot of reasons and protecthing ones things is more and more a probleme. I had never problemes, I'm 73 and my last project has a lot of wood... to hold on .... 🙂 Keep on safe trucking and thanks for your reaction.

    A great build but I have driven this style of truck for a living and they are a death trap in a front end collision and they were designed for short urban trips not long distance driving. We were trained to get our legs off the floor if a collision was imminent to avoid them being trapped and crushed when the front of the cabin folded back.

    • @simonjourneyman
      @simonjourneyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. Yes I am very happy with the Mitsubishi, drives like a Mercedes 4x4 van. The noise level is ok, not perfect. It has been additionally insulated from noise from outs and the engine. The consumption is also ok for a vehicle of that size: 14-17 / 100km. But I am a very moderate driver, between 90-110km/h for longer distances. Safe travels to you, best Simon

      www.woelcke.de/wohnmobile.html - this is the company that built my vehicle. It used to be around 4 years to have them build an individual vehicle, but I think now they are able to do it faster. However I think that the Mitsubishi truck base is no longer available, you might have to look for an alternative vehicle base like MAN, IVECO etc. But I can highly recommend Woelke in Germany, they do very solid and high quality work. Out of all the small 4x4/off road campers that I've seen over the years on youtube this is my favorite one to date. Its not too flashy/luxurious or plain, the interior is welcoming and cozy, plus for the size the bathroom has the shower and toilet separated. The fordable sink with flexible hose was a simple but smart solution for space limitations. I love this camper.

    What are the dimensions of the box in terms of length and width in feet or meters?

    • @simonjourneyman
      @simonjourneyman  วันที่ผ่านมา

      hello and thanks for commenting. The inside of my cabin is 4x2 meters, the hight 2m. The overall length of the vehicle is 6.5m which is a reasonable size for an expedition veicle. I am still able to curise the streets of inner cities and even park in regular size parking lots. My previous vehicle was a MAN 9t vehicle with a 7.5 x 2.4 dimension which made it quite difficult to cruise in narrow streets of Norway and Sweden up to the North Cap. So I think you are very well off with a smaller, more efficient vehicle if you plan to explore more narrow paths. Good luck and safe travels, cheers Simon

    I really like this build, but for the price am baffled why the solar electronics are such a mediocre grade. Only 400 watts of panels and very cheesy invertors etc.
    I would expect at least 1200watts min, in panels and ALL ancillary components to be top end Victron.
    I am presently building a roamer that will cost a fraction of what is invested here, but am sparing no expense on my off grid power system and am also installing a (must have) re-circulating shower.

    Love these trucks, not a fan of the build out. I really like the fold out sink, thats smarts. Other than that though, its just a standard build, not spatially idealized, which is what I am always seeking. Plus got to quadruple the size of your water supply, WAY too small.

    • @simonjourneyman
      @simonjourneyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for watching and commenting. Maybe you are right, every build is very personal, I used to drive a much bigger Man truck with an even more individualised build. It did not work for me, hence I decided to drive a smaller truck with just the bare necessities, including the 200l water tank, works perfectly for me = less weight and always fresh water. Safe travels to you, best Simon

    Well specified vehicle!
    Well executed build out!
    Excellent video!
    May I ask several questions:
    What other base vehicles did you initially consider and why did you choose this one?
    Diesel tank size?😢
    What is the weight as equipped, wet (water and diesel and propane all full) - and what is the maximum permissible weight?
    In practical road driving, what kind of milage do you average so far?
    Diesel heater (water and heat) or propane?
    That engine choice (+ad blue) probably is motivated by local emission rules (and then makes a lot of sense) Can this engine be operated in areas where only much less clean and much higher sulfur content diesel is available? What could it all run on - if need be?
    You separate drinking water from general water and have the drinking water in containers that seem easy to clean and if need be to replace (makes sense to me). But then I got confused about the filtration. You are not really sending both through the same filters and pipes/hoses - or? Could you please explain?

    • @simonjourneyman
      @simonjourneyman  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ralf,
      thanks for commenting and watching my video.
      I used to drive a larger MAN truck from KERKAM in Hamburg, Germany. It was simply too big and clumsy and I often got stuck in from of bridges that did not carry the weight of 13 tons, or tunnels that were not hight enough to pass. So I decided to sell that vehicle and buy a more compact 7.5 ton truck. - And I am very happy that I chose a Mitsubishi Fuso from WOELCKE in Heimseim Germany.
      So far I drove 15'000 km in the past 9 months, with a average of 14 - 17liter Diesel / 100km.
      And yes, this is an AdBlue vehicle, Euro6 emission class and I was very lucky to be able to import it from Germany to Switzerland, since the rules for vehicles from the EU are very strict in our country.
      When you drive in The Central or South Americas, you can adjust the engine to the worse quality diesel without AdBlue by implementing a chip. - But I have not tried that so far.
      Yes, I do have a diesel heater and I am very happy with it, almost no consumption, but with the floor heating and radiators always nice and warm, even during very cold temperatures.
      Drinking water: yes, exactly, I use the tree 30l tanks for the drinking water and the tanks can easily be cleaned when I fill up the tanks. And no, the water is not running trough the same tubes, it is filtered by two separate UV filters without getting mixed.
      I hope I was able to answer your questions. Safe travels, thanks for subscribing and greetings Simon

      .. the weight is 6.5 tons with empty tanks, the max weight 7.5 tons. The gas tank is 200 l and the water tank 25o l.

      @patlunde ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@simonjourneyman Is the truck modified to get 7,5ton max weight? I can only find specs for 4x4 fuso with max 6,5ton. (In Norway).
      I really would like to find a 7,5t 4x4 fuso - and have peace of mind regarding the weight😊…And I have to say that you have made a excellent video, of a wonderful, well thought out -and incredibly well built expedition truck! Woelcke is definitely a company I’m going to contact! Have you considered a Cinderella incineration toilet? It’s something that I consider to install in my next motor home.
      Best regards
      Patric

    • @simonjourneyman
      @simonjourneyman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello@@patlunde, thanks for commenting and liking my video - all very good questions that I try to answer: The max weight of that vehicle is 7.5t, at least in Switzerland, don't know if its different in other countries, or if my builder had to change the chassis from 6.5 to 7.5 tons? And yes, after having traveled with a heavier MAN truck, the Fuso feels more like an upgraded Mercedes Sprinter, very nice handling, only the engine could be equipped with a bit more power (which some of my fellow Fuso friends upgraded with a tuning-kit)
      And yes, if fact I am playing with the idea of installing a Cinderella toilet, one of the best toilet systems I think. My compost toilet is ok, but I generally don't like the idea of driving around and collecting the human remains for weeks on end. Happy travels, best regards Simon

    • @simonjourneyman
      @simonjourneyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Ralf, thanks for watching and commenting. I try to answer all your questions:
      I was travelling with a lager MAN truck before buying a Fuso. It was simply too big and bulky, specially on narrow streets in Norway, of passing small villages in France. So to me the Fuso seemed like a perfect solution and I am very happy with it.
      The diesel tank contains 200l. But you can easily install a second, separate diesel tank.
      The total weight of this build with full tanks is close to 6 tons. The max weight 6.5 tons. but you can upgrade it to 7.5t max.
      I average about 20-25K km/year and the water and floor- and radiator heater is powered by diesel.
      Yes, the ad-blue engine is the only street legal diesel engine permitted in Switzerland.
      Friends of mine currently travelling in South America with the exact same vehicle had to manipulate the engine in order to be able to consume low-grad diesel. According to their experiences this should not be a major problem.
      An yes, the separate drinking water containers are the perfect solution to be sure that the water you are consuming is fresh and the containers always clean. And no, I am not sending the regular water and drinking water through the same pipes.
      Safe travels, best Simon

    I’m very jealous of your beautiful house on wheels but having said that I bought an old former British army Bedford RL 4 by 4 and I built the sides solid and a flat 5 ft roof. On the inside is a 5 by 6ft bed and also a small sofa bed with heating and cooking I bought a small stove that provides me with heat when I need it along with cooking, now granted it’s not great to look at but it’s very cozy and dry, I also installed a 5 ton winch at the front for towing which happens to other snobs anyhoo back to your home. Had I the finances to get a custom built one it would be very similar to your one because your home is beautiful. 🙏👍

      Hi Nelson, thanks for watching and commenting on my truck. Seems like you did a great job, building your expedition vehicle and I am truly jealous that you can do that. Perfect build for traveling the world, congratulations. I thought about installing a winch as well, but I think I would not use it that often, but still carrying it around with me all the time. I also have a bike rack on the back, but rarely take that with me. Safe and exciting travels to you and thanks for the many compliments, you deserve them equally.. Best Simon

      @@simonjourneyman I forgot to add that I’ve also got a former army trailer that carries my Honda cj 250, my engwie bike and a small ish generator and what amazes me is that the very people who look down their noses at me and ask for help when they are stuck or a flat battery
