Yeah it’s a shame, but when you think about it... the fact that Porsche drove them out by complaining makes the car even more notorious. Not only did they win GT titles but Porsche was only able to eliminate them by changing the rules. Mmmh not really, rules at that time were clear but subject to interpretation nevertheless hence why BMW actually ran with a prototype engine despite rules specifying that tourism race car had to be direct derivatives of their serial production model. Their complaint was actually legit since the engine in the M3 GTR was not a race modified version of the base model but a different prototype engine even though it was based on the serial production car... GT cars are basically road version cars with tuned engine managment fuel injection/air intake valves, race exhaust lines and lightened reinforced body.
This car has the most nostalgic place in my heart since Most Wanted was the first racing game i ever played as a kid and instantly fell in love with it and the M3 GTR's mechanical raspy whine. Good times. I remember when i first won that car back i would spend endless amount of time just driving around Rockport, riling up cops and come back with a massive bounty lmao, that's all i ever thought of during school, to just go home and play with this car.
I grew up with this car too! In fact, the M3 GTR replaced the R34 GT-R in the number spot for my favourite car of all time (which for anyone who knows me certainly says a lot about the BMW). I plan on obtaining an E46 M3 within the next 2 or 3 years to start a GTR replica project (it won't have the NFSMW blue and silver design though, it will have my own look)
For me I discovered the car in Need for Speed Mostwanted and decided it was one of my favourite cars. Then I did some research into the racing history and the sound and the engine and I decided it was my number one favourite car of all time (this was back in 9th grade or something).
Gamer The Banning I have actually never played the shift games, but I feel like I should give them a go. I also had a video idea that would require me to buy them anyways
Hey man that’s still pretty awesome! You’re living my dream lol. And it is definitely possible for you to build a really good replica depending on how much you want to spend and how detailed you want it to be.
@@TheRacingJoker there is a nfs most wanted replica. A dude who is all by him self transforming his e46 in a most wanted gtr m3. He made the wide body him self cause the companies toke to long. He made the side exhaust. And now he is even putting s v8 in. Its a long project but damn i love it

The BMW M3 GTR is probably the best sounding car ever made in my opinion. When I first played Most Wanted and Carbon I always thought it couldn't be a realistic engine sound, but then I saw it going around the Nurburgring Nordschleife on TH-cam and was like "Holy crap, it actually sounds like that in real life" lol. I love this car a lot

Ever since I played NFS Most Wanted in 2005, my dream car was M3 GTR, I couldn't afford GTR or M3 E46, so I bought an E46 sedan, and I still love the car!!
The M3 GTR also appears as DLC in NFS Most Wanted 2012, the road-going version appears in Forza Motorsport 3, and the #42 race car is buyable in the career mode of Gran Turismo 4.
You got it right mate. The BMW M3 GTR is a legend indeed on the racetracks. Not much is known from this car since it is cut short due to the whining from porsches haha very informational video though. Loved the way you explain it and it's iconic status in need for speed most wanted.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! The dream goal is to build what is called an homage replica after I get out of college. Street E46 M3 chassis (or possibly a genuine E46 GT chassis, the same as the GTR) with an E92 V8 with a supercharger and a holinger transmission
The Racing Joker. Can't wait to see that project of yours on youtube one day! I'm a really big fan of need for speed and BMW! Subscribed to your channel bro! Keep it up😊
Thanks a bunch! The goal is to at the very least buy the E46 within the next 1 - 3 years but in the meantime modify my WRX but do some unique things with it.
What's really funny is that I have more experience with all wheel drive than anything else. I've had my car since 2017 and our Dinan 2016 BMW 340i xDrive is all wheel drive with 414 hp. Grabbing an E46 will be my first main experience with rear wheel drive if I don't drive anything else before I get it.
You can hear that whine on your car as well (most of them at least). IF you put it in reverse its the same sound, because the reverse gear is the only one straight cut :)
This is very true, although it's much more insulated than a racing transmission. In fact even racing transmissions today aren't quite so loud as the straight cut ones from the M3 GTR's era.
An '04 BMW M3 GTR is my dream car simply due to NFS:MW 2005 haha I was actually devastated when I found out that I was near impossible to get one in real life. That car was mesmerizing.
Lol I should probably elaborate that I don't dislike Porsche as a car, but the way they handled the American Le Mans series could've been a bit more mature. I think the 911 GT3s are really impressive cars and have an impressive history with motorsport, so to gain an advantage by whining tarnishes that.
Yeah not their proudest moment in history, I can guarantee you they don't acknowledge it or address it... especially because when the E92 GTR came along and returned to ALMS Porsche started getting smacked around again.
I had no idea that this car was such an absolute monster, or just how incredibly well NFS MW got the sound back in the day. I was amazed when I clicked on the video of Hans racing his M3 on the Nurburgring and heard the sounds of the M3. Blissful I tell you.
Knowing that you had the job to research this and did it in such a good way is something deserving of a reward. And that reward is my subscription to your channel. (Also, why don't you have more subscribers for doing such quality videos? It's honestly unfair how TH-cam treat their small content creators.)
Hey man the channel's growth rate is a lot better now thanks to this video. Last week I was at 370 and now I'm almost at 1000 so I can't complain. It just takes patience and dedication so I'm just gonna keep doing what I'm doing and try not to rush it.

I did a track day at Summit Point WV with the BMWCCA in 2001 or 02 and during our lunch break two of these GTR M3's ran laps. It was incredible. I stood on the wall mid straight and watched them run down the straight flat out for about 10 laps. Seeing this video brings back some good memories of those cars. Just beasts..
John V That’s awesome! Man I really want to do something like that. I’ve always wanted to go to the Rolex Reunion to see the star spangled M3 GTR they restored and hear the P60B40 in person.
@@TheRacingJoker It was both the Blue and White only and the Red/white/blue M3's there that day. I remember that they were about 30 seconds a lap faster than what we were running that day.. Truly a great day at the track..
It's my favourite sound in all of motorsport. 1. Straight cut gears 2. Fuel igniting in an exhaust during gearchanges to make fire and gunshot sounds 3. Flat plane crank V8s 4. RB26/RB30 with old school HKS/Trust single turbo kits (T04Z/T78)
I’m mad that the M3 GT2 wasn’t the successor to the GTR for NFS. They had their chance with Shift to bring that over. Can you imagine those two side by side?? That would’ve been awesome as hell!
Most God Like Sound in a car ever and my old Mustang sounded amazing. Nothing beats the roar of the P60 with the straight cut gears. But damn you can make that whine sound sexier in NFS Heat and Unbound by adding a Centerfugal Supercharger to it and it harmonizes with the gears perfectly
Yes I do lust after this car as well. It's kind of scandalous and I was fascinated by the sound of it before I knew about flat plane cranks and everything.
I learned about the flat planw crankshaft from someone who builds BMW racing engines and has worked on the P60B40 (Chris Fletcher). He said there are other reasons too but that is the main one.
V12Style Definitely, there will always be that difference. I’m not sure what can be done about it but I’d still be happy with a P65 swapped E46 anyways, it’s the closest I could ever get to owning a P60
@V12Style Yeah, but even in the hugely unlikely event that they say they'll sell me a P60 I bet it will cost 200-300k or more. I'd rather just do the P65 and supercharge it for 600 whp
P60 was a race engine... P65 was a Street Engine... basically the same set up produced roughly the same power but we're set up for different environments...
This is true! For a while the true GTR look didn’t appear in the NFS games. Mostwanted 2012 had it as a DLC car but NFS 2015 and Payback have the full kit this time. And I think NFS World also had the GTR style kit from Undercover and Prostreet
Yes, tho MW2012 one is same as 2015 inline6 sound plus tranny whine. NFS World has street version and Racing GTR is in the files. Beta of NFS World had one with the prostreet kit and NFS MW05 sound tho :v
This video made me so happy, the M3 GTR is my all time favorite car but I know so little about due to BMW’s secrecy behind it. I’ve spend many nights looking into the car only to be disappointed by how little information there is on the car and how it’s literally impossible to ever be able to own one
It may be impossible to own one but we should rejoice in the fact that we can still build replicas. I personally plan on building a replica and I can’t wait to get started
The Racing Joker ever since i learned it was impossible to obtain, it became my dream to swap an S65 from the E90 into the E46 instead and then do all of the body work, it’s as close as I could ever get to having the real deal, but man good luck with your project! Once you start you should do like a little series on YT and I’ll definitely watch!
Ricardo Aguilar That’s the plan! I definitely want to document it so that I can share the process with rest of the world. The way I want to do it is a little knew and different so people doing research could learn from what I know (which is why I made this video, this video is a result of researching how to build a GTR replica)
Thanks a lot! I've got three more episodes of Car Topics scheduled to be uploaded. I upload informational videos every friday! If you've got any topic suggestions for future videos hit me with your ideas. Here are some I've got planned (not including the videos I already have uploaded and scheduled but aren't released yet) Dom’s RX7 DK’s 350Z (Requested) A V8 R35! - The Nissan R35 GT1 (Requested)
Imagine if there's atleast 1% chance that EA would revive Most Wanted & Carbon into a single, new game with the same CAST, improved maps & most importantly, a much clearer storyline, covering those theories & mysteries that never got revealed..
The keys 😉 lol but in all honesty when putting together a recipe for a replica of one of these me and the consultant essentially decided street E46 M3 chassis, stripped interior, carbon PTG widebody, S65B40 with upgraded internals and flat plane crank, a supetcharger for at least 575 whp, a holinger sequential, welded chassis roll cage, side exhaust and whatever other supporting mods. So the only extra thing i would ask for is a couple extra hundred horsepower.
Mike Arredondo This is true, but for me it’s about replicating the looks, sounds and functionality. The only difference is a bit of boost. 2M_David is putting together a V10 E46 GTR and that sounds very nice, but for me I’ve been so dead set on this since I was a kid, I can’t imagine it any other way 😆
I have never tested this but I always assumed it to be the case. That being said though all of the cars in NFSMW were made to be ridiculously fast. The M3 GTR at the end of the game has a 2 second zero to sixty and a 245 mile per hour top speed. I mean heck with the way the "ratios" were set up you essentially shifted into 6th gear at exactly 200 mph.
@@bagelitsandila4611 Oh I wasn't saying they were different, just that they were insane. Especially since with the GTR in real life the top speed of the car was limited to about 155 mph because that was the redline. If someone found a way to replicate similar performance on a car with six gear in real life like would be very interesting, especially since the RPMs barely fall during upshifts on both the car in the game and in real life.
I can't confirm that but that would make sense to me since there are three instances where you the car appears in the vanilla game. First is during the intro when Cross chases you, second is during the canyon challenge event where you drive Cross' Vette and the third is the M3 GTR you unlock by beating that challenge. The three versions might be for the three different instances where the car can appear. When going through the debug menu of the game (using the extra options mod) I'm pretty sure there are three GTRs you can cycle through so you may be right.
Clarification: When I say the P60 inspired the P65 I’m talking about how they were able to return to ALMS with a V8 because the E92 M3 road car had a V8. Yes, I know the S65 is derived from the S85, I just used poor word choice 😂 sorry if I made you think I didn’t know that. The main reason why I talk about the P65 so much is because we have the option to buy it (for 80,000 USD or more but still). The P60B40 was never available to the public so my argument was that the P65 was the next best thing for GTR replicas.
Thanks I’m glad you enjoyed the video. And I actually already have a video comparing the sounds of 10 different GT-Rs with different exhaust and turbo setups. I even talk about the owners and the parts used in the cars to get the sounds th-cam.com/video/jfPMNgwy1io/w-d-xo.html

Yeah this quote was always really unusual to me. As a kid I assumed he was talking about the car, until I realized he says it right after inviting Mia to his “winner’s circle” 😶
I have a set of ptg brakes from a gtr and I’m working on putting them on a road going e46 m3. The brakes are performance friction billet aluminum 4 piston both front and rear. The brakes are 380mm in the front and 323mm in the rear. They are product code zr26 for the front and zr22 for the rear. Those are the codes from performance friction. The calipers are nickel plated.
That's really cool! The ones from the link below? I imagine those brakes must be pretty good. We're they used on their V8 powered cars and their P54 ones or just the latter? www.scottsdalemotorsport.com/brakes.html
Enjoyed watching that from start to finish. Not sure that I will ever get into the exotic body kits, but good to have the information on the engine types. My preference is still the 340xi. I just need to find unique mods
I have to admit the BMW M3 GTR has always been my favorite car as well. Even though its a bit out of my price range to even try to make a replica of the NFS Most wanted bmw. still love it though. :)
This is very close, I probably won't use the exact BBS 595/594 but I will use a holinger racing transmission with no insulation so that the whine is super loud. And the S65 will be supercharged on top of being flat plane so that the car is ridiculously fast also thanks to the weight reduction. The OMP velocita steering wheel was the only thing I couldn't find haha
Epic M3 GTR. I recently watched two videos. 1 from BMW classic warehouse with one of the M3 GTR road car in BMW classic warehouse. 2 Hans Stuck doing a fast N Ring lap in the M3 GTR, very good, well worth it. It is a dream car. Even to have a lookalike / replica etc
Thanks! I'm trying to upload a car info video every week! I'd love to revisit the BMW M3 GTR in another video but I need to figure out what to make it about (maybe it's depiction in Need for Speed?)
I love that you asked this because this puzzled me for a long time as well. Various transmissions were used in the M3 GTRs but they all at the very least had shift cuts for upshifts (not always downshifts). Essentially what would happen is when the driver would move the gearlever towards a higher gear the engine timing would cut out and allow the gears to change and once the gears were back in place the engine timing would resume and it would essentially be a super fast gear change. I don’t think they always did this for downshifts because that creates a risk for money shifting and ruining a prototype engine.
@@TheRacingJoker Oh I get it! So it basically is like a semi-automatic gearbox, except that it has a functionally clutch, and is h pattern shifting. And yeah, I saw some drivers used the clutch when downshifting
Kronx Electronic tuning through the ECU. And yep! It’s basically an H pattern that behaved a lot like a sequential gearbox. But yes it still had a clutch and they often had to still use the clutch or at the very least hit the accelerator for downshifts. Sometimes for downshifts they didn’t use a clutch but the driver still had to blip the throttle to raise the RPMs for the lower gear.
@@TheRacingJoker I see, thanks for the info! But guess it's gotta cost a lot to just put one of these in your own street/track car lol, let alone getting a fully build car. And plus the maintenance cost, your fluid and oil change, and the special fuel the engine requires (or maybe not)... That dude from NFS must've got some background so he could put his hand on one of these beasts :D
Th M3 GTR is a legend! It is so badass that it was only allowed to be raced for one season! In that one season the M3 GTR had beaten the endlessly wining Champion Porsche. BMW raced against all 911s, in a place where other manufacturers believed they had no chance. The M3 GTR had won the season and beaten Porsche so badly the ALMS administration had to completely change it’s regulations. It should be known that the E46 M3 GTR is the gateway car that broke Porsche’s stranglehold in the GT class of production car racing and showed the world of Motorsport that Porsche was beatable. In subsequent years at the time cars from manufacturers like Ferrari, Aston Martin, Panoz and more many more entered the GT class.
@@lt.patterson6081 BMW M3 GTR wins, Dodge Demon is just another stupid american muscle car... No american muscle can beat the M3 GTR, not even the Corvette...
Absolutely! People always say it broke the spirit of le man... but I think it just broke Porsche's spirits instead. And then the E92 came back for revenge after Porsche spent a few years lying to themselves about how they earned their victories while BMW was gone
Journey awaits I would say this doesn’t apply to all cars but it usually works with most racecars. But I’d rather choose an exhaust system and manifold/header setup based on performance and the note it produces. I’m not a big fan of just trying to be loud out trying to win an exhaust contest with an AK47 tune. I don’t have anything against it it’s just not my cup of tea

For me I discovered the car in Need for Speed Mostwanted and decided it was one of my favourite cars. Then I did some research into the racing history and the sound and the engine and I decided it was my number one favourite car of all time (this was back in 9th grade or something).
Nfs shift has straight cut gear sounds on all cars, so i would recommend you to try it. (The graphics still look incredible)

The Racing Joker Damn! A Subaru. All wheel drive goodness in there!

Edit: holy sh* I never had those likes but I hate Porsche
Lol I should probably elaborate that I don't dislike Porsche as a car, but the way they handled the American Le Mans series could've been a bit more mature. I think the 911 GT3s are really impressive cars and have an impressive history with motorsport, so to gain an advantage by whining tarnishes that.

Actually, it came from a sampled TVR Cerbera engine note, which has a Flat-plane V8. The NFS: MW has sound files under this name for the M3.

Love straight cut gear box sounds. I have a friend who has a gtr replica. It’s sweet he built it back in 2014
It's my favourite sound in all of motorsport.
1. Straight cut gears
2. Fuel igniting in an exhaust during gearchanges to make fire and gunshot sounds
3. Flat plane crank V8s
4. RB26/RB30 with old school HKS/Trust single turbo kits (T04Z/T78)
That whine man that whine, it gave you the sense that it accelerate infinitely, the adrenaline i get from that sound is priceless.
I count myself lucky, I got to see this car run in the UK at Donnington many years ago at the ELMS . the GOAT!
M3 GTR has more wail and yell to it compared to the M3 GT2's howl
That's definitely true, hopefully that can be overcome with an exhaust because both the P60 and the P65 make a similar note.
I love how detailed this video is!!
ProStreet and Undercover also had a GTR kit for M3 e46 tho without the side exhaust
Kacpa2 Yeah I remember trying to figure out how to get the M3 GTR files in World with a value editor
The E46 M3 GTR race car is the peak of exterior car design. Such a perfect looking car
V8 NA straight cut gears what else could you ask for
The keys 😉 lol but in all honesty when putting together a recipe for a replica of one of these me and the consultant essentially decided street E46 M3 chassis, stripped interior, carbon PTG widebody, S65B40 with upgraded internals and flat plane crank, a supetcharger for at least 575 whp, a holinger sequential, welded chassis roll cage, side exhaust and whatever other supporting mods. So the only extra thing i would ask for is a couple extra hundred horsepower.
The Racing Joker you can always go a simpler build and drop the V10 and a 6 speed still NA and arguably a better engine scream

Im tearing up listening to that gear whine. Such an amazing car
In NFSMW, in the beginning of Career mode the acceleration without nitrous is really close to the real thing
@@TheRacingJoker i think the ratios are the same on both beggining and end of the game M3
@@TheRacingJoker i have also heard about 3 versions of the M3 GTR in Carbon. Just in case you know, is it true?
I can't confirm that but that would make sense to me since there are three instances where you the car appears in the vanilla game. First is during the intro when Cross chases you, second is during the canyon challenge event where you drive Cross' Vette and the third is the M3 GTR you unlock by beating that challenge. The three versions might be for the three different instances where the car can appear. When going through the debug menu of the game (using the extra options mod) I'm pretty sure there are three GTRs you can cycle through so you may be right.
Goosebumps listen to m3 e46 gtr 2004, my God, what a car!!!🥺😱
Clarification: When I say the P60 inspired the P65 I’m talking about how they were able to return to ALMS with a V8 because the E92 M3 road car had a V8. Yes, I know the S65 is derived from the S85, I just used poor word choice 😂 sorry if I made you think I didn’t know that. The main reason why I talk about the P65 so much is because we have the option to buy it (for 80,000 USD or more but still). The P60B40 was never available to the public so my argument was that the P65 was the next best thing for GTR replicas.
Closest to the p60 was the s62 since they are both based off the m60 engine.

Still got goosebumps when haring that sound
But how are the drivers able to shift gears without pressing the clutch? That part always confuses me whenever I watch any M3 GTR driving video.
@@TheRacingJoker And the engine cutout is controlled by the electronics units, right? Or it's fully mechanical?

That would be the 2005 Porsche 996 GT3 RSR. I can recognize that flat 6 turbo by sound anywhere.
