Fun fact about the "Straßenwagenversion": Although they produced 10 road legal versions, only 7 can be driven on German roads. A rich woman (my theory: Susanne Klatten) bought 2 road legal cars as an investment but never registered them in Germany. The cars gained astronomical values but she can't register those cars in Germany for road legal use since the laws for safety and emissions standards got stricter, thus it would fail today's requirements. Those cars are basically worthless in Germany except she could ship them to countries like Saudi Arabia, where it might be possible to legally drive those cars. I'm not sure, what happened to the 3rd car, but this is what I heard from my guide when we went to BMW Classic.

It's a shame it wasn't widely sold, perhaps porsche hadn't been so vehement with banning the M3, maybe they would've produced and sold a few more. Thankfully we got the E9x M3 afterwards which came with a V8 as an answer for the GT2 regulations.
Just look at the price! It was a quarter of a MILLION compared to the standard M3s price of 50 to 70 grand! I remember the road tests of the time LOVED this car (I remember the 4.4ltr version tested?) but all said it was too expensive.

Great video as usual ! One thing to point out though is that the street version E46 M3 GTR carried very little parts from the standard E46 M3. They shared door skins and tail lights. Any thing else was E46 M3 GTR exclusive like bumpers, headlights with lighter covers, CF hood, flat underbody and the even lighter roof and trunk lid skins contributed to the "Unobtanium" status it had.
You forgot to mention the straight cut gears which made its sound more distinct and iconic, because many nfs players couldnt fathom a gearbox with all gears sounding like the reverse gear and thought the NA engine was supercharged
I got to witness it along with 2 z4gtes some years ago at PIRC the week of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. It sounds amazing and flames off-throttle. The z4s were clearly faster, but one of them burned that day. All 3 had those long intake trumpets that you'd think would choke the engine, but obvious the engineers knew what they were doing.

I started working in BMW plant and I managed to meet a man who worked here for 41 years. He was working with E46 M3 GTRs too. He told me plenty of crazy informations about it, damn.
What’s funny is I grew up with the dude who did that street version of the GTR. It’s a “nice from 7ft away” build, as we never saw eye to eye on quality over fame
They made 2, 5L V8 versions for the ALMS series. 1 of these made it to Australia to race in the Bathurst 24hr race in 2004, owned by Maher Algadri. Was more recently sold at Auction a few years ago.

0:05 i was att a car show few years back and they actually had one of the spare chassies for sale. it was the spare chassi for the car in 0:05 it had the exact same livery and all to. believe it never actually saw any racing so it was a fresh spare rolling chassi they never needed.

Lots of race cars run Enkei rims because there’re light and cheap. The stock rims are way more practical for street use because they’re stronger and marginally heavier. CSL rims for the win!
The race cars had centre lock magnesium BBS wheels that I don't think you could've bought at the time if you weren't BMW anyway. Even if you could they would be anything but cheap and nigh impossible to produce at production car scales. Plus that would've necessitated centre lock hubs for the street version which would've meant using the race car brake discs and calipers minimum with a one off master cylinder and biasing valve because you can't use racecar esque dual master cylinder setups on street cars.
There is a myth I love to believe, that BMW Motorsport has a EXACT Replica of NFS MW M3, with the same livery, in its Race-Spec in the Garage. And that it is still racing someday or another on Nürnburg Ring time to time.
for that price buy an e46 car or just the chassis swap/buy the engine for the better v8 on the e92 the s65 fab the firewall buy a straight cut 6 speed dog clutch manual gearbox and a adapter plate too find yourself a good body shop get that e46 some spot-welding fab a roll cage double wishbone the front and the rear get the GTR body kit and side exhaust the bad boy from there you may have some more to spare
In my opinion, the first NFS Most Wanted (2005) did this car a real injustice by making it sound like an angry swarm of bees. Also sounded more like a Straight-6 than the actual P60 V8 that the GT-R variant came with. Still an awesome car, it was my absolute favorite in the game. Edit: It was really hard to place the original engine noise to be fair. Couldn't quite put a determination on what it actually sounded like. Definitely wasn't the P60 though lol

I honestly still don't get why the BMW E3 was the one. I guess because NFSU1-2 walked so MW could run, and be the game at peak need for speed popularity. There are a few cars from U1/U2 that I like much more than the more basic BMW.

and so many tried to replicate the MW05 GTR and always... always chose the wrong damn bodykit. The proper kit is the wider version of the Strassenversion, not a later iteration. Hence the black version has the Strassenversion included. Andres iteration was probably the worst out of all. Theo (Blackpanthaa) might be able to pull it off, despite using a regular 3 series coupe and not an M3. At least the kit he chose looks actually the closest (for beeing a replica kit, the real Racing kits from BMW are biiiiiiiiiiiiiig ticket items). All other appearances in latter NFS games are just mere "wannabe kit-cars", not the proper deal and should never be accounted for. Why do people care about the headlight washers so much for example? Using the halogen headlights saves weight over using Xenons and their ballasts. And afaik xenons werent even an option for the '99 MY of the E46, which the MW05 GTR is based off of.
BMW has made some great engines. I am no fan of their cars. They should rehire all of the Karmen people and resurect that business and let them build cars designed by Italian companies using thier better drivetrains. No linguine rod bearing engines need apply here. Just imagine what a beautiful machine they would have!
This was Porsche's move. The E46 chassis was ultimately pulled because of the stipulations that the P60 wasn't a fair move to race with and an S54 based platform would never see 24hrs. Things got legal and Porsche spent $12M making sure the GTR stayed in its grave.
Yes the GTR was extremely capable and Porsche knew it from the beginning. The move to ban it was politically infused and heavily incentivized. It's considered one of the worst moves in sportsmanship of that time. I only know this because I work for BMW.

They probably are not just intake but restrictors to get it within allowed spec at the same time.

Those second set of rule changes happened after porsche complained that it was "against the spirit of the rules of le'mans."

BMW has made some great engines. I am no fan of their cars. They should rehire all of the Karmen people and resurect that business and let them build cars designed by Italian companies using thier better drivetrains. No linguine rod bearing engines need apply here. Just imagine what a beautiful machine they would have!
Yeah, But unfortunately, bmw ultimately cancelled the bmw m3 gtr for the road, after the race version being banned from le mans for some reason
This was Porsche's move. The E46 chassis was ultimately pulled because of the stipulations that the P60 wasn't a fair move to race with and an S54 based platform would never see 24hrs. Things got legal and Porsche spent $12M making sure the GTR stayed in its grave.

Yes the GTR was extremely capable and Porsche knew it from the beginning. The move to ban it was politically infused and heavily incentivized. It's considered one of the worst moves in sportsmanship of that time. I only know this because I work for BMW.
@@Dgadudeyeah, I remember a BMW advertisement poster making fun of Porsche when they banned the GTR from ALMS. That's cool that you worked for BMW, may I ask if you happen to know, was the decision to build the E9x M3 with a V8 made as a result of this debacle or was it before then?
