People don't let you say what you wanna say to them if you're face to face so writing people what you truly think of them and then facing them afterwards I think is a completely sufficient way to communicate. It doesn't have to be cowardice to write instead of talk. You get all you need off your chest. The great thing with writing is that nobody can backtrack and manipulate their way out of what they clearly just said, because it's written down. Nobody can say "oh I must have misunderstood" because it's written down in text. When you argue with people they tend to deny things that they just said because they realize they gonna look stupid.
Text can so easily be misunderstood though too, you can't read body language, see facial expressions or hear tone of voice.

This advice is great in idealistic situations, but not everyone is open to engaging in conflict resolution. You can make all of the effort not to avoid conflict but if the other party is avoiding it there's not much you can do and nothing you can say to get them to engage. Some situations are unworkable, pick your battles.
