FIDDLE TUTORIAL: How to get off the Sheet Music

- Where are my fellow classically trained fiddlers? This video is for you! I firmly believe that you can and should use sheet music as a tool to help you in studying Irish fiddle music, but there are some pitfalls to relying too closely on the notes. So it really does help to get the music off the page, not marry yourself to one exact bowing pattern or set of notes and focus instead on embodying the feel of the tune. This tutorial will help you do just that.

Excellent advice Hannah! Getting the tunes memorized has so many advantages, including freeing your eyes up to see people enjoying your music!
It's a tough call however, when you've got only so much time per day to play and you'd rather blast through a whack of favorite tunes with the sheet music, or use that time to commit to memory one tune.
What is great though, is once you've got it memorized, it's there forever (more or less), and no more lugging around tune books and music stand.

Totally know the feeling, Melissa! Even though I'm a big fan of learning by ear to get the feel for the music, that doesn't mean sheet music doesn't have a rightful place too :D
