This series was amazing. A creature of light and a creature of dark. The creature of light is a fugitive wanted for murder on the run, the creature of dark is a Christian preacher. Set against the backdrop of the great depression and a traveling carnival. Amazing.
this is actually a clip from the final episode of the second season. its based during the great depression and both men who are given supernatural powers. one is good and the other is evil and the two years of the show pretty much built up their conflict (awesomely!) in that scene, hawkins (good guy) is trying to heal sick people by transferring their disease and injury to justin (bad guy), hoping to weaken him before the final battle. this is one of my favorite shows ever.
@msa1985 It was not on the air for long. Production costs for the show were astronomical (and the quality is reflected in its two short seasons. Superb and fleshed out casting, great settings and wardrobe etc. You really do feel like it's taking place in the dustbowl). I would highly recommend this show to anyone who want to see an unconventional occult story ultimately dealing with the battle of good and evil in an atypical fashion with atypical characters in an atypical setting.
Just finished my rewatch of the this, one of the best series I've ever seen. Sad that it ended before its time, but still I find it is unforgettable and something I would highly recommend, as it's got something for everyone
It deserved at least one more season. Even 8 episodes could've tied it all together beautifully, however I still love that I got the 2 seasons I did get because the last couple episodes of season 2 were seriously intense and I was in shock when Brother Justin and Ben finally meet.
@lyricist07 each of them was an avatar of light or dark... hawkins (light), crowe (dark), but the thing is that you can't really trust light or dark in this series... justin keeps calling himself "the left hand of god" and ben is forced to do evil to do good. it's a creepy, ambiguious interpretation of old religion.
I had a problem with the ending scene. Clearly it was meant for more episodes or perhaps a movie to finish the story. The last scene is the Carnivale loaded up and moving to another location while the dead Usher has apparently been resurrected by the Omega even though Management mocked Ben for resurrecting play things (critters) in his youth while commenting that resurrecting a person required the death of another. It is supposed to be a life for a life. We are led to believe that the corn field is providing the life force power requirement to resurrect the Usher as we see the growing circle of dying corn. This show needed a finish...too bad as it was quite an enjoyable two seasons...
Man, I miss this show. A lot of shows I've liked have been cancelled, but this had to be the biggest let down of all! I really despise HBO for taking this off the air...damn you!
I lol'ed hard when I first saw brother Justin rip open his shirt while his sister screamed. Great show... what's with HBO and canceling their best shows? They're almost as bad as the scifi channel.
i agree that hawkins is hardly a perfect messiah, and could arguably be going to a darker place (which would have been fascinating), but i also think that brother justin, especially towards the end of the second season, becomes pretty irredeemable as far as moral ambiguity is concerned.
Was a different ending for Season 2 filmed? After re -watching this episode I thought originally there was a more "intense" battle between Ben and Justin.
The show's set during the Dust Bowl era circa the American Great Depression. You meet a young ex- convict named Ben Hawkins who lives on a farm with his dying fanatically religious mother Flora . On the other side of events we have a cleric named Justin Crowe who shares a house with his spinster sister Iris. The Carnivale rolls into Ben’s home town of Milfay, and they pick him up after Flora dies, and the bank bulldozes their tiny shack. The carnival is safe for Ben, as he's an escaped convict, and they can hide him. Both these men harbor a special secret...each is an avatar destined to steer the course of history prior to WW II. Ben’s job is to save us from nuclear holocaust, and Justin's job is to 'usher' it forth. We spend two full seasons watching these characters evolve into their fully fledged selves as the writers teach us a bit of Gnostic history. Watch it, you'll never regret it.
This show got it down right which explains why it ended so soon and was not popular. The good (God whatever) not liking attention or fame, doesn't want to draw attention to himself and evil (Satan, whatever) being the deceiver of nations. All this time they think he is a religious leader. Outstanding! Reference material for those who take their study seriously.
I love this show and HBO is sooo stupid for taking it off. I am still pissed after all these years because season two ended in such an awesome way. I couldn't want unitl season three and stupid HBO took the show off and won't let the shows creator do anything with the rest of the story. SUCKS!!!!!
I remember the trailers on HBO way back when this aired, but I never watched it. Is it worth watching? I hear it ends on a cliff hanger, don't want to be sorely disappointed for an ending...
Although it does end on a cliffhanger, it is worth the ride, and I'd say it's not an *outrageous* cliffhanger, it's more of an open ending. One more show from HBO's golden age - next to The Sopranos or Deadwood. I don't collect that much DVD's, but these two seasons are standing in my shelf. It's hard to compare it to something, even to other big mystery hits like Twin Peaks or Lost, Carnivàle is really unique. If you're a fan/ like the mood of Twin Peaks, The X-Files, old monster or gothic movies and Film Noir I'd definetly recommend it. Hope that helps.
@@Sapsche Thanks, that does help. Yeah the "Golden Age" as you phrased it of HBO was really something else. I didn't watch Deadwood or Carnivale, but always saw the previews for them. But the Sopranos I have all the DVD's for and I absolutely loved that show. I was an x-files fan way back in the day, haven't watched Lost, though. Yea maybe I'll check this out. Thanks, much appreciate it.
@@MrSlowestD16 Sure thing. Deadwood and Carnivàle have outstanding writing and a great cast of charaters, not just the main protagonist that's interesting. I hereby recommend both :) Edit: Regarding the spoiler - I just stated my opinion, others claim it is "a massive cliffhanger", but I was totally fine with it.
@@Sapsche Fair point, sorta like the top at the end of inception, maybe. I usually hate cliff hangers, but that was good enough of a conclusion for me.
I loved this show. Fucking HBO let the show go and so many things didn't get answered. I'm still confused to this day. Watching the 2 seasons i see something new i hadn't notice before.
when we first got HBO, it was a week or two before the series finale, and i thought "Hmm, their ending it, must have been on for years." man was i shocked to find out it was only 2 seasons.
This series was amazing. A creature of light and a creature of dark. The creature of light is a fugitive wanted for murder on the run, the creature of dark is a Christian preacher. Set against the backdrop of the great depression and a traveling carnival. Amazing.
I miss this show. Was left on such a cliffhanger.
this is actually a clip from the final episode of the second season.

i love carnivale. bring it back
I will always miss the show.
Me too. There’s no other show I will miss more than Carnivale. There’s just nothing else like it.🤷♂️
I wish this series had continued; it was so good, and I loved seeing Ben and Justin face off.

such a strong scene...... I hardly slept the night I watched this!

I command thee make season three!!
HBO : "BE STILL!"
Such a strong scene. This story should continue, no matter what form it takes =(

Why go to all the trouble to build a great series, to just cancel it? I just dont understand.............."management" LOL
I'm surprised no one put up the rest of the battle where you see Ben fight Justin in the cornfield.

Well played
Definitely one or the other , movie and season three
I guess both good and evil can be ambiguos sometimes
Fuck dammit, I've never even seen this show but I want to now, knowing that both Clancy Brown and Toby Huss are in it.
HBO Step up and bring us season 3! Not like Nick Stahl is doing anything
best tv show ever
Indeed

Lazarus Dubois. Good ole Stumpy
how many people do you think it would take to do that? im down =)
wow, this show looks crazy! im definitely picking up the dvd's this weekend. can someone kinda explain the situation, on whats going on?

Rome, Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, The Corner, & Carnivale.

I hate that they suddenly canceled it when it had so much potential.
