People talk about top players being upset by lower ranked players like thats a bad thing, but its nice that players arent dominating. It makes the competitive scene seem more competitive
yeah i agree, a slight problem with melee is that top players just dominate and feels like its not possible to make a name for ur self.
I don’t mind top players not making it to top 8 but some of the recent top 8s have been sleepers. For example SSC and BOBC5 were huge tournaments but the top 8s were kinda lame. Watching top players like Leo, Spargo, Gluto, Light, Muteace, Apollokage are fun to watch.

@@wallyt4873the truth is that a ton of top players play "lame" characters. Ken, Sonix, Acola, Dabuz, etc are all top tier players.
Since competition is close it's likely that you'll get a top 8 with 1 or 2 if them in it

I think lowering the timer is a better solution to time outs. It isn’t the time out itself that’s lame it’s the 6 minutes before the final minute. Timeouts would be way less lane if they were shorter games

Exactly. Using Steve losses or close calls as an argument against a ban just says more about their playerbase underperforming. If actual top players like Spargo, Leo, Dabuz etc. mained Steve, we would get an actual taste of how broken he is but thankfully they don’t want the game to die just yet.

if i ran a tournment I would say if a game goes to time then the next game in the set goes down by a minute each game thats a timeout. im prioritizing tourney times not running into midnight
How many times does a game go to timeout in a set. Rarely more than once from what I have seen maybe twice. You are saving like two minutes
still in ultimate its a playstyle you gotta consider. if this is done three times in a set that saves 5 minuets which is most peoples whole 2/3 set another thing is that it sets a precedent that we dont want to be here to midnight just to prove that u can run around the stage with sora or sonic playing tag. if you go to tournaments you will understand how long these things can run with only a couple dozen entrants. its a slight change but sets that precedent @@extonjonas6820
I have thought about character bans before, would definitely freshen up the meta and make everyone who wants to ban a char happy, except the one tricks that now cant pick their character cause everyone will ofc always ban someones main. So in the end people just cant play the char they put the most time in which is EH
I do remember Gluto specifically mentioning that he'd love to participate to a tourney like, even if everyone banned wario for him.
Can be a funny one time gimmick thing, but can't really be more than that.
Although I do think calling solo mains "One tricks" is quite negative, especially when you look at some of the tops that solo main, they trade time training another character for time being better with that character. It's not like having a secondary is being a 2 trick or something lol.

A timer in a competitive fighting game makes no sense to me, except in this game, because people can stall. But if you remove the timer entirely, people are forced to duke it out to win, so no BS. The only problem with that is that tournaments might run rampantly longer than they should, or maybe not; maybe it evens out since no one's going to be trying to stall or time each other out anymore because they can't. That's my take: lowering or increasing the timer won't change anything; it'll just make the timeouts or stall tactics take longer, or more timeouts will occur even when they don't stall.
So yeah, I think the best solution is not having a timer at all, believe it or not. Because it means no timeouts, no stalling gameplay, and all-out battles instead. Win-win, if you ask me.

If you have 2 characters fighting, let's say sonic vs pacman (Sonix vs Ddee), Pacman doesn't want to approach sonic and would rather sit behind hydrant and camp him out. Sonic also doesn't want to approach because trying to approach against hydrant + fruit is horribly disadvantageous for sonic. So in a situation like this, both players would take a huge disadvantage by approaching, so as a result, neither will approach.
If you remove the timer, the game is devolved to a game of patience: Who is willing to camp longer before getting bored/impatient? You're gonna have 30+ minute games in situations like this. Neither player will ever approach because they know approaching means they lose. The timer forces the player who is behind to approach, otherwise they lose by time out.

Just wanted to correct Cosmos at 13:52 there have been only three players in ultimate’s life so far that have been top ten players. That being Mkleo, Tweek and Light. I do understand that Cosmos was trying to push against the washed allegations against Leo but I do want Tweek and Light to get some respect as well.

This is the messed up thing about time in Smash bros. If we extend time in matches, the committed campers are just gonna timeout longer. If we shorten it, timeouts gonna happen more. If we remove timeouts/make timeout a draw, characters like Fox and Sonic just gonna circle camp if they're on a deficit
Somehow this infinite time 1 stock format might be the best possible proposition. Because it's the closest to traditional fighting games, where timeouts are hype. Hope the tourney works out. But I think late-game ultimate meta is kinda doomed to at least decline in entertainment value between the timeouts and shockingly high amount of the most dominant characters being floaty/campy (funny how Olimar was the only campy character to get nerfed, meanwhile every other nerfed top tier went in)
The thing is, this problem only exists because of the view that timeout = bad. Having that view is quite sensible because with our current rulesets, only the most campy and boring matches go to time. If the timer was lower timeouts would just be a normal part of the game. Any fast match isn't going to time either way but you may have some more passive games go to time and that is ok. The moments before the timeout have historically been some of the most exciting moments in smash anyway.
There is the problem that if you go too far and have the timer at like 4 minutes, you would have too many matches where one player is in a clear lead with not enough time left for the other to catch up. In that case there would be lots of people giving up after 3 minutes or something which isn't desirable. I'm not advocating for that low of a time anyway. I'd say go down to 6 minutes definitely and mayyybeee test out 5 min.
It's a problem with Smash Ultimate in the end but if you wanna accept the game for what it is you either have to deal with long ass matches like we're doing right now or deal with the fact that 10% instead of 2% of matches go to time.
Or learn to corner pressure better. Ult players are so whiny
