Hi Dylan, Yes please on wax potting. Question about wax - parafin for consistency, availability, tradition or another reason? What are your thoughts on bee wax or bee/parafin blends? Still interested with how you work out what resistance/how many turns and what inductance. Do you go to say Seymour Duncan and make your version with their numbers? Do you work it out on a computer or on paper? Do you measure what sounds good to you and try to replicate with the same dimensions? Where is the information on how to actually say I want my own unique pickup and this is how you design it? Cheers Andrew
Thank you Dylan. This is extremely helpful. Yes please do the video on potting. I have a few questions I'd like to ask for a future video if you don't mind: 1. I have a very heavy spool of poly wire. How do I set up the spool to turn at the same rate as the pickup winder? I'm a bit concerned that the wire will break if it's the only thing pulling the spool around whatever it's mounted on. 2. Can I use actual beeswax (as left behind by transient bees) to pot the pickups instead of paraffin wax? 3. If I wind 2 half height coils (one on top of the other) on a strat bobbin, connected to each other by a coil tap, would the full output sound the same as a single coil with the same number of overall winds/same overall dimensions etc?
Really appreciate all the work you do putting out these learning videos .. I finally got a good enough deal on the right kinda guitar that I'll be starting my life as a hobby guitar tech mod upgrade guy .. Still not even close to winding my own pickups (need to do some 'easier' projects first, for a bit) .. But all the things you've shown on your channel have really helped shape my understanding of what's going on in my guitars and what things can be done to hot rod them
thanks D. a couple questions... why flatwork, not preformed plastic bobbins ? do you ever press in the eyelets after winding, just to avoid snagging issues ? i have heard of potting with sanding sealer or similar. any experience with that sort of technique ? also, i was a little surprised you put no tape around the poles before winding. and last, do bevels on the poles effect anything beyond cosmetics ? thanks, steve
One of the difficulties I've had is sourcing what I would like to believe is quality wire. I recently purchased Elektrisola wire through Remington. when I received the spools, they were labelled Remington. I contacted Remington and was told that Elektrisola is one of their suppliers. Remington buys large spools of Elektrisola wire and rewinds it onto smaller spools. I don't know for sure is Elektrisola is a top brand, but I did see a spool of it on your bench. I'm guessing, it must be. Perhaps you can elaborate on that.
just what i was looking for!
