If your ego had a "location" in the brain, it would be the default mode network, where much of your self-critical mind chatter happens. Taking psychedelics down-regulates this brain network.
Researchers describe the effect of psychedelics as "letting the brain off its leash", or firing the conductor to let the orchestra play. Without the default mode network acting as a dictator, areas of the brain that don't normally interact meet, producing phenomena like hallucinations and synesthesia.
An overactive ego may be what punishes those of us plagued with anxiety, addiction and mental health disorders. Psychedelics can have a beneficial effect by temporarily killing the ego, jogging the brain out of negative thinking patterns.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    MICHAEL POLLAN
Michael Pollan is the author of How to Change Your Mind and seven previous books including Cooked, Food Rules, In Defense of Food, The Omnivore's Dilemmaand The Botany of Desire, which received the Borders Original Voices Award for the best non-fiction work of 2001, and was recognized as a best book of the year by the American Booksellers Association and Amazon.com. PBS premiered a two-hour special documentary based on The Botany of Desire in fall 2009.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TRANSCRIPT:
MICHAEL POLLAN: So how do these psychedelics work? Well, the honest answer is: We don't entirely know. But we know a few things. One is, they fit a certain receptor site -- the serotonin 52A receptor -- and they look a lot like serotonin, if you look at the molecular models of them. And in fact, LSD fits that receptor site even better than serotonin does, and it stays there longer, and that's why the LSD trip can last 12 hours.
What happens after that, we don't really know. It's an agonist to that receptor, so it increases its activity. And this, the neuroscientists say, "leads to a cascade of effects," which is shorthand for "don't really know what happens next." But one thing we do know, or we think we know, is that it appears that one particular brain network is deactivated or quieted, and that is the default mode network. This was discovered not very long ago by a researcher in England named Robin Carhart-Harris, who was dosing people with psilocybin and LSD and then sliding them into an MRI machine to take an FMRI, a Functional Magnetic Resonance Image. And the expectation, I think, was that people would see an excitation of many, many different networks in the brain. That's what the kind of mental firework foretold. But he was very surprised to discover that one particular network was down-regulated, and that was this default mode network.
So what is that? Well, it's a tightly linked set of structures connecting the prefrontal cortex to the posterior cingulate cortex to deeper, older centers of emotion and memory. It appears to be involved in things like self reflection, theory of mind (the ability to impute mental states to others), mental time travel (the ability to project forward in time and back) which is central to creating an identity, right? You don't have an identity without a memory. And the so-called autobiographical memory, the function by which we construct the story of who we are by taking the things that happen to us and folding them into that narrative, and that appears to take place in the posterior cingulate cortex.
So to the extent the ego can be said to have a location in the brain, it appears to be this, the default mode network. It's active when you're doing nothing, when your mind is wandering. It can be very self critical. It's where self talk takes place. And that goes quiet. And when that goes quiet, the brain is sort of, as one of the neuroscientists put it, let off the leash because those ego functions, that self idea, is a regulator of all mental activity. And the brain is a hierarchical system and the default mode network appears to be at the top; it's kind of the orchestra conductor or corporate executive. And you take that out of the picture, and suddenly you have this uprising from other parts of the brain, and you have networks that don't ordinarily communicate with one another suddenly striking up conversations. So you might have the visual cortex talking to the auditory system and suddenly you're seeing music. Or it becomes palpable. You can feel it or smell it -- synesthesia. So you have this temporary rewiring of the brain in the absence of the control of the regulator...

"Shaking the snow globe" is very similar to an analogy I came up with. The mind is a bit like having your thoughts, feelings, etc laid out on a table, and when you take a psychedelic, it's like kicking the table from underneath so that everything flies into the air, spins and floats about for a while and when it all settles back onto the table, sometimes, some of it, settles in new ways, that can lead to new ideas and behaviours.

@@Skulltaro There is a guy in the comments who's wrote some good posts about meditation. Find his comments and take his advice, or you know what? Don't assume things about others and don't try to tell others what they should or shouldn't do. Just tell the world in general what you enjoy and what you've disliked about your time being alive. Maybe in the future we can make life on Earth better, given enough time we will make life better for all things.
Also it was a joke. The video talked about tasting sounds and sensory stimulation being crossed, which is interesting. Saying you hear sounds, see light, or feel pressure is absolutely useless information because those are the primary stimulants of those senses. Let us know your brain thinks and your heart beats as well, please. SMH
So, your ego is not dead. Telling other people to be like you, to do what you do, just typical selfish behavior.
Look, drugs are fine, chemistry makes things interesting, from the beginning of life, to the bio-engineering we do today to feed the world, to, all sorts of things we can not even imagine yet in the future. Things that exist outside of the mind, like a warm meal or a particle accelerator. You know, tangible things.
Talking about feeding people's minds by giving them drugs is pretty useless if you don't put good information in there from the start. Like a solid education, love, and encouragement towards creativity. Our world needs good mothers and fathers, more than it needs drugs right now. We need scientists, engineers and doctors of the world to be working where they are needed most, not where the highest paid jobs are. Or shit, there's a thought, why aren't the highest paid jobs on Earth not the ones where the least developed, least productive regions on Earth, being transformed into wellsprings for new life?
Let's take the Sahara for instance why are the people that live on the north coast of Africa, on the Mediterranean, pulling water from the ground thousands of kilometers south? Wouldn't it make more sense to create an inland sea by pumping water *into* the Sahara, and then letting it filter through the ground and evaporate to increase the humidity, so that life had *more* sustenance in the region, and not less? We already have the technology to do that, just look at all the giant pipelines around the globe that stretch across whole continents. Pipes going from the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean could create new inland seas in the Sahara that would turn the whole desert into a lush grassland, filled with crops that could feed, not just all of Africa, but would provide Africa with a wealth of crops to trade to the rest of the world.
That is the kind of thing I'd like to see life accomplish. Food means health for more people and people are the greatest things in the universe. Transform more of the Earth into conscious beings, as we set our sights on the other planets in this solar system and the other stars in the sky. That's not just better living through chemistry, that's *LIFE ITSELF* through chemistry.
And at the end of the day, when some of you want to eat, drink or inhale some mind altering substances, have at it, but don't throw wrenches into the machines that made your life possible from the start. The hardest job for life is going to be to transforming the rest of the mass on this world, into biomass. To increase the net total life, in the universe. So that water, sunlight, air and rock, can be transformed in a being such as yourself, such as me, that can know love, that can know life. Because right now, it can't make any decisions at all, but we can. We can because the efforts of our ancestors, going back not since the dawn of man, or the dinosaurs, but back for billions of years to the dawn of life itself, have made this experience, have made all experiences, possible.

Psychadelics are amazing and totally eye opening, but I started to miss the feeling of being in the "other world". I took them more for fun than for learning and clarity, so I haven't taken anything for half a year now.

I remember taking 2 grateful dead fluffs just 2 years ago with a buddy of mine . We were hanging out in a park alone with nobody around us . We were staring at the sky when I saw an airplane . For some reason I went into a tangent about how he sucks and he thinks he's so cool for flying a plane and basically tearing down this random person for no reason . Then in an instant I snapped away from that perspective and said something along the lines of " but he's actually responsible for thousands of people's lives on a daily basis and contibutes more to the world than we presently do " . My buddy nearly broke down and had a revelation about how blind judgement is a downside of our ego and became more conscious in the process. Reading this back , it doesn't seem all that monumentus. However in that moment it felt like we had figured out world peace . Long story short l.s.d and other psychedelics are a very Strange and delightful tool for insight and growth . But they can also make you have revelations which enhance yourself but cause you distress when you see others who haven't recieved their awakening .

Pleased to be seeing so many videos about psychedelics lately. The world is starting to wake up. If we can decimate the cultural narrative that psychedelics are inherently harmful and/or “evil”, the path to our collective awakening will be much easier.

MRI scans were mentioned. I can't imagine how that would be to experience under the influence of a psychedelic like LSD. The MRI scanners I've been in tend to make loud klaxxon type noises, as well as hammering sounds that are almost deafening, all surrounding you from inside of what resembles a large canister. I would think that would be very unpleasant and jarring to the nerves while tripping.

I take Acid at points to help me with my Bipolar, it can often help lift my head out of the place it is stuck - I pre-plan a full day, roll a shit load of joints too, pop it and then I usually take the train to the beach, take a big walk along it - meet a friend for a bit and have a drink and chat (if I'm able) - then just head back to the beach. It should be noted it is a beach devoid of people, I find a quiet spot and I just settle in, let the clouds go by and sit outside reality and look at how stupid the world really is.

Set your intentions, learn meditation amd mindfulness, let go, remember you are safe and you are not your thoughts. All things learned will fade like a dream, if need be. Do not fear the monkey mind trying to tell you what is happening to your mind.
It's SO safe and healing, just gotta work with meditation, mindfulness/self awareness and the ego...
It seems to give people trouble sometimes. Once you navigate that, Jesus Christ it's your literal birth place and birth right.
Lastly, the trip is a rabbit whole. You drop, bounce up real high, and go through some layers. It fades over 6-8hrs. Don't smoke weed until after the peak unless experienced(people reading).
      Read guides and trip reports.
With mindfulness, you cannot fail(people do fail at mushrooms).

I ve felt overwhelmed by self destructive toughts and feel like the endless loop of these toughts is killing me inside slowly. I cant remember things like i used to. I have very low self confidence and at the slightes mistake/error i m so critikal of my self that i end up hating myself even more and that keeps the fueling the cycle of negativity i just cant get out with how my life is now. Once a year i leave for 4 weeks of military service and its a the only time of the year where i m either so occupied or have so many ppl to talk to that my brain has no time for self destructive toughts, but as soon as i finish and get back in my routine i m back at start and just feel like i want to die so i wont cause any more problems to the people around me

At 0:17 he says psychedelics fit the “serotonin 5-2A receptor”
It’s actually called the “5-HT2A” receptor. 5-HT = 5-hydroxytryptamine, which is the chemical name for serotonin. “2A” specifies the receptor subtype, as there are different kinds of receptors that are activated by serotonin.

One thing I know first hand is LSD and similar psychedelics can act as powerful, long lasting antidepressants.
The theory presented in this clip made perfect sense to me at some very visceral level. I regularly seem to get "stuck" in some default mode of thinking about myself and my current life situation, which in the long run breeds boredom and depression, but LSD always helps me see things under a different lens.

I can relate to the interconnection theory from my experience of seeing Interstellar in cinema, with no drugs mind you. During the end credits I was in, more or less, a state of shock. Not only mind blown but severely mindf***ed. I exited the cinema into the empty late evening streets, and just crashed emotionally. Seeing Interstellar fired every single neuron in my brain and opened the emotional floodgates. Every kind of emotion simutaniously, BANG! I actually don't remember half of the movie (except the blackhole scene). The movie, the music, the sounds, they all nuked away my default system. In some way it was like I had been blind and def my whole life and then suddenly being able to see and hear at the same time. I felt like the people on youtube who get their hearing implants activated. Mentally overwelmed.
So this video explains a lot on WTF happened to my brain that magical night.

I have used and enjoyed LSD, Psilocybin, DMT and Salvia Divanorum hundreds of times and this presentation makes sense. The loss of "self". The little voice definitely shuts off. One of the many fun aspects of a deep trip is coming down, the reintegration of memories and personality, an "oh yeah" sensation. But that doesn't explain something like synesthesia, or does it. Is smelling colors a loss of executive functioning?

    • @thoyo
      @thoyo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I think the temporary synesthesia results from the down regulation of the control mechanisms that implement rigid interpretations of sensory input and cognition. Basically allowing sensory "wires" to cross.

So the default mode network is basically the ego: Great insight!
With years of practicing ZEN, I couldn't overcome my ego as radically as I could with Amanita Muscaria. (But ZEN forms a solid foundation and is part of my daily routine). Habits become recognizable when the over-activity from the default mode network decreases and can then be changed. The noise of the inner voices decreases: my self-deprecations are stopped, exposed and can thus be tackled. How else can self-love be developed?
Be careful with the dosage - less is usually more ;-)

Quiets the Default Mode Network? You mean exactly like Meditation does? That is extremely interesting.

  • @TheTarutau
    @TheTarutau 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh nice. You noticed. There are two different ways to suppress the default network. Meditated and did psychedelics. Meditation was like rolling a snow ball up a hill and making it bigger. Psychedelics are acute so it’s like sky diving. Since psychedelics are hallucinogenic it’s hard to train with it in daily life. Ends up I bet they have to take the drugs for a long time to scratch at the surface of meditation. Since it’s slow and can be done anywhere anytime. Thus you can use it to see into your behaviour and others behaviour in real time. I found a mix was best. For maximum effect I suggest just using meditation until reaching kensho. Then after a few months in full kensho drop a psychedelic in. It will cause a deep state of equanimity to arise directly after the hallucinogen has worn off that will last a week or two if you haven’t used psychedelics before. Then enter kensho again immediately after the psychedelic wears off or before the taste of equanimity wears away and drop into a state of deep equanimity while in kensho. It’s awesome.
There might be a third waiting for ya to do studies on it. It’s dreaming. Lucid dreaming can be used as a gateway to being awake while the body sleeps. Then using concentration clarity and equanimity as described in the unified mindfulness system of which shinzen is co author or something one can alter states of awareness at will. So while in a gaba induced state of sleep one can meditate into different states of awareness as well as have out of body experiences. But you lucid dream into the state first. Again using clarity concentration and equanimity. So much to learn. There are other arts too.
Personally the hallucination means nothing to me. It’s an experience. The drop into equanimity after is very useful. It can teach beginners mind and right effort. So for me it’s a tool for changing behaviour. In a positive manner when done correctly. When they treat the hallucination like it’s real it will cause confusion.
So the psychedelic is in lieu of what I see as training on the second key insight. So no beatings or Sundance required.

Tom Rhodes the ego is not the source of suffering. Ignorance is the source. We evolved into existence and there was no welcoming party to tell us how to human. It has taken this long to figure out this much. Nor do I require meaning or truth to find fulfillment in life. A drug that causes hallucinations cannot be used as proof of that other stuff you mentioned hence why it’s a hallucination. Truth is a desire. Meaning is a desire. We live we die. There is nothing bleak about this. But we desire more and what we have no longer will suffice. And thus people seek meaning where there is none and an escape from this reality which does not relent. It will take a long time though before people can see that. Their legs are not strong enough yet since everyone keeps making sure that it’s difficult to learn to stand on ones own without any external power or meaning to help ease the pain like morphine given to a dying patient. And until then meditation and psychedelics will have to do. They point towards don’t know. It is up to the individual to get to know. Know this if the teacher did not teach such things outside this reality the student would not desire it nor would they seek it and still enlightenment would be theirs. This tells me a lot.

No, no... the older you get, the more stubborn you get. The state of mind needs to be free of thought in order to obtain what is to come. But before something happens, one must understand that shortcuts won't get you anywhere.

The brain is NOT a thought generator it is a FILTER.
A good book on whether the narrative you create is ‘you’ is ‘the man who wasn’t there, investigations into the new science of the self’ (anil anathswamy)

You are absolutely correct. The brain actually LIMITS frequencies just as a television or radio tuner does, focusing on a very narrow band. This world is a virtual-reality matrix. And it is designed such that you must DESIRE; you must SEEK if you are to find Truth. Those who know The Meaning of Life know that the ego is the source of all our problems, and like deep meditation, psychedelics lay the ego aside temporarily so that one can get a glimpse into - or beyond - the virtual-reality matrix that we are experiencing. @@tomrhodes1629 ego is not just the source of all our problems, it a vital step in evolutionary and maturing process. But if we get stuck there by cultural programming for example it becomes a problem.
As for the "Holy Grail". i dont know your theroy but in my experience its not an golden chalice but a body of flesh and blood.

It teaches you to ignore the ego more. Like you'll learn to take control of your brain instead of your brain controlling you. Meditation can also do this.

Sent this to my parents in an email. Maybe now they'll understand what I mean when I say I cant comprehend living at there age without having tried a single psychedelic. How the hell do I sign up for these tests? Lmao, this is human evolution and I want to be a part of it.

"Fire the Conductor, let the orchestra play" is a pretty good metaphor, but I think I came up with a better one.
So Image your brain is like a Prison Population. Not only do the prisoners follow the rules of the prison, but they also have their own strict social rules which they must follow. i,e, Don't talk to other races or interact with other gangs. Each gang or race has strict rules they must follow as well. Imagine the brain as a large prison population with many races and gangs. Normally, these races/gangs of the brain are real strict in their clique behaviors. Each prisoner and their race/gang represents a certain brain region and brain groups. When psychedelics are taken, something beautiful happens that would NEVER happen normally. The cell doors are opened , the prisoners take off their shirts, and they all have an electric dance party together and the guards join in!
