      Michael Waltrip has said that he genuinely wanted to take the lead but every time he'd try to get by Jr the car would get out of shape and that's how he knew he was supposed to finish second.

    This is the best Junior win second only to him winning in the 3 car. They didn't call Dale Jr the pide piper for nothing.

  • @josephcottier5483
    @josephcottier5483 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Correct me if I am wrong please. I am not a huge Nascar fan but there were a lot of things that that fell into place perfectly. 1. He took the lead with 3 laps to go. His fathers number. 2. He held on to win a race on the same track his father died. 3. As soon as they crossed the line the next car overtook him. I am not saying he didn't need it. I am just saying it might have been given to him. All for the right reason.

    • @zonedout5998
      @zonedout5998 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The next car didn’t overtake him as soon as they crossed the line. It was 2 seconds after. Which JR had already slowed down which is why the other driver passed him up.

    • @thetalesofdaneandco
      @thetalesofdaneandco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jr. earned the way to the front and was followed in by his teammate. he had 13 Top 5's at Daytona over his career and won there 4 times, so this was not a fluke either. He just happened to be good at that track.
      I struggle to say the other drivers took it easy at the end, but let's say this. I think he would have won even with someone contesting his position, but everyone behind him would have been remembering that only months before this race Dale Sr. had died here, and whoever either did or had the possibility of wrecking his kid would have had the wrath of NASCAR affiliates and millions of fans pointed at them.

      @heidiiiiiiii 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thetalesofdaneandco agreed. I don't think anyone wanted to risk what had happened in February - they didn't give it to him but they also didn't do everything to attempt taking it from him.

      The weird part isn't so much that Dale Jr. won, but the fact that Mikey came in 2nd, just like the Daytona that year (except reversed, Mikey was 1 and Jr. was 2).
