  • Thanks for watching! Read all about Titus here 👉🏼bit.ly/richroll457
Veteran of stage and screen Titus Welliver has one of the longest lists of working actor credits in Hollywood. You might know him as 'The Man In Black' from Lost. Or from his appearances in every Ben Affleck movie. But Titus is perhaps best known for his portrayal of 'Harry Bosch' in the Amazon Original Series "Bosch." This is a conversation about fatherhood, film, painting and living the artist life.
    Enjoy!

This kind of talk he has about his father is incredibly helpful to me. My father was hard too, but there was never a life lesson behind it. It was about demeaning me for my choice of interests. It was reproach for not being enough like him, or how he thought a man should be. He was a bitter man always looking at what other people had and bitching that he couldn't have the same things. He was a working man and I was more of an artist and intellectual, two things he despised and looked down on. So I've always kept a bitterness about the way he was bringing me down, instilling self-doubt and self-loathing in me. Hearing testimonies like this helps me see how destructive his education was. How little he brought me and how he deconstructed the person I could have been. And maybe, ultimately, how it's now my job to rebuild what he destroyed to be a better person than he ever was.

God be with you, friend....Being an artist myself, I know the damage narcissistic personalities can bring into one's life. I recently entered some drawings in a contest and a "friend" upon hearing what the cash awards would be for chosen works venomously said, "None of that's for you!" DON'T LET YOUR CONFIDENCE BE SHAKEN BY DEMONS....

@@lionstandingII Thank you, and may you have the strength and wisdom to ignore those voices and listen to your own, friend.

Your comment made me very sad and I know how hard it is to overcome that love or should I rather say> non-love language you learned from your Father. I will definitely advise you to explore spirituality, and I do not mean Christianity as that does not help you understand the bad things that happens to you.
A healthy dollop of Buddhism and just an understanding and acceptance that we choose our lessons, trials and challenges before we get here has helped me accept all the bad stuff in my life and put a silver lining spin on it.
So, love your Dad for teaching you how to NOT BE OR LIVE, and thank him, even if it is just all to yourself, for being such a perfect example of how you don't want to be.

I get up at 4;30 am, title of a great Kate Atkinson book, Got up early, took my dog, moved out of academe into translation and free-lance writing and that's a really good time period to engage in that, most days, say 5 out of 7. So with your podcasts I sort of keep up with, the length of a Dickens novel which were written in installments, he got paid by the word just as I often do, I break them down and ought to keep my ideas to myself until the whole conversation has unfolded, but fools rush in, as do I and that's bad and that's good. I'm processing the segment on charismatic and sometimes difficult fathers right now; my sister, 2.5 yrs younger -- makes a big difference in very early life -- was much more like my Dad on some levels than I, so when we heard, "let me teach you something" which was an expression of enthusiasm to me, she acted like Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird and ran down the street ready to torment one of the little boys next door. Yes encyclopedias came into it; also Thoreau's coda to Walden On Civil Disobedience, and Plato; the list was endless. When we became teenagers in the early '70s there was always a bunch of young guys from the neighbourhood with my Dad holding forth, and yet fundamentally I thought of him as a classic introvert; as an architect and town planner he spent hours at the trestle board and it still amazes me that he found time to be Himself; taught gypsy guitar by gypsies in Serbia where he was born in 1908 -- definitely longevity gene in his family -- picked up 7 languages like other people breathed -- in love with his dogs, usually large shaggy loveable beasts you didn't want to mess with until they adopted you whom he referred to as his puppies. A one off. Perhaps everyone's Dad is a one off. I got a Rhodes scholarship to Cambridge and he didn't care; linquistics and moderns (French, Italian) -- you do that in your spare time!!! But he loved us; more than that he was our Friend.

Around 12:42/, you’re making me think of when your x wife got shot. there were people there tending to HER, and then naturally a couple of people needed to know if YOU were ok. And your thoughts were on your daughter, you said everything they needed to know & managed to say you’ll be back, walking to your car trying to hold it together. Later Maddie asked you why aren’t you more upset (?). I imagine you were trying to focus on Maddie’s needs. I think everything that went down in that episode was impeccable. Spot on. Nailed it as they say. So so good/ heartbreaking but great acting.

Discovered Bosch a month ago and I just completed season 6. Great show with an intriguing protagonist. But, 30 minutes into this interview, I must say the character (Bosch) doesn't hold a candle to Titus Welliver (the man himself). Class act. Hearing Titus on this interview, I wish they had let him write his own lines in the show. I found the clipped, overtly clever lines that Bosch constantly delivers a bit grating and tough to endure from the third season onwards. Titus is so articulate, insightful, and deep -- if he was just allowed to ad-lib on the show, he may have made the character more colorful and accessible in a sense. But then again, the staccato lines are maybe a conscious literary choice and meant to create a wall between the audience and the character.

A bit lazy this morning; last blessedly short comment, the posthumous release of You and Me, the inevitable Tom Petty, admirably cobbled together by his older daughter Adria with his voice over, "if you're a young band and you think you have a choice, you're in the wrong business. I'd still be doing this if I never got paid, if no-one liked it." Yes, great podcast, great conversation.

Here's the trouble with the bit about the homeless: If those tents popped up in Calabasas - and became a feature, not a bug - of Calabasas, Rich Roll's view would be markedly less tolerant. The conversation in this section is two rich white dudes who voice compassion because they don't have to deal with it everyday....WORKING CLASS PEOPLE AND THEIR CHILDREN HAVE TO NAVIGATE THESE TENT CITIES EVERY DAY... Let me tell you - your compassion goes quickly when you see teenagers having to get to school walking past these places. Both of these men have the privilege of compassion because they ARE NOT working class. They are NOT trying to raise kids around these tent cities. They CAN LEAVE anytime they like.
The white liberal tolerance for endless tent cities is directly connected to they fact that they DON'T live near it. Rich Roll alights in it. Titus Welliver sees it past the protection of a 2nd AD...or as creative information. The FACT is that in most of the tent cities what we see are either mental illness or addiction and the WORST thing that can happen is to allow it to fester. ( The working homeless are invariably in cars, not tents yet the L.A. city government ATTACKS those people)
Skid row has been there for 40 years or more... 40 YEARS. THAT IS A FAILURE. Any sane view of that adds up to FAILURE. The first step is to get rid of it. Period. ANY sober addict will tell you that. Remove the tents. Disallow new ones. THose who want to "get sober" - so to speak - will... the rest will find another place to set up "shop" - ANY SOBER ADDICT KNOWS THIS. We can then help those with mental illness, and addicts who want it... imagine if we spend the $ we spend on "bridge housing" that will go unused on mental health treatment.... or sober living instead...but rule one is you can't live on a city sidewalk in a tent. The tents gotta go. ANY ADDICT WILL TELL YOU THIS.
Allowing these tent cities to fester , and/or seeing them as some sort of tragic system failure - all with "calabasas eyes" is degrading, pompous, and dangerous to the working class "housed' community that has to walk around these places day in and day out. Why is there never any compassion for the working class HOUSED community trying to make ends meet in these areas rich white liberals have allowed to degrade?
