When I started my small garden quest I knew that one of the first things I needed to do is to determine the composition of soil in my raised beds. For this I needed to perform a simple soil texture test. But I the end I didn’t found one but two soil texture classification that I will show you in the video.
One simple way of determination of soil texture is by using a jar test. Whit this test you can know what kind of soil you have overnight. But if you want to know the answer to the question what type of soil do I have faster you can perform the soil texture measurement by feel.
Both methods are explained in the video and I think anybody can perform this two simple soil texture analyses at home. And at the end you will never ask yourself again what determines the texture of soil.
How to tell what kind of soil you have is and old question but it don’t need to be hard to answer. Leave me a comment on what method you will use.

Very good information. I saw this test already on another channel. 99% Silt here ;(
Mainly i´m focused on the lawn and it´s roots. They can only penetrate 2-3 cm.
But i´m adding sand to my 2 year compost now as well for the raised bed planting.
I´m looking for a good and cheap Sand supplier now. Pure Quartz sand is very expensive in my region.
Washed river sand, rounded and not under Ø 0,5mm ;)
I went to school for 13 years with chemical and biology focus, but never heard about soil composition or simple test like this, that´s scary.

I agree. That's why I did the ribbon test to confirm what I have.

Hard to see, yes, but the time for settlement will help you.
      Sand 5 minutes
      Silt 1-2 hours
clay took more than 24 hours to get a clear solution (water)
You have to be around at the 1-2 hour timestamp to draw your silt level line when it´s settlement is finished, so you don´t have to determine the boundary on pure optics.
The sand line is no problem to take, 5 min can be waited easily.
And the top layer line (clay) is also no problem, just wait 1-1,5 days.
Just don´t let it sit for a week, because the whole sediment column (silt and clay) will sack with time and get compacted, therefore distorting the result (layer heights).

Depends on what is wrong with it. Adding compost almost always helps. If you have too much clay and silt add sand. I will try to make a video about it.

I have a book that gives me a couple at home tests. One is you take a handful of dirt and place it in a mason jar. Then you add water and fill it 3/4 of the way full. Shake well and let settle for at least 12 hours.
Clay heavy: Heavy layer of particles at the bottom and cloudy water.
Peaty: Slightly cloudy water with most of the particles on top of the water and a thin layer at the bottom.
Sand: mostly clear water with fine gritty particles at the bottom.
Chalky: water is pale gray with white grit like layer of particles at the bottom
Lot: water is clear with layered particles. Fine on top dense on bottom.
      Hope this helps..
