    Amazing video. Language is clear, accent professional, speed of language appropriate, explanation is not verbose, spoke to express not to impress. I am a layman but understood the soil science well.

    Thank you! I am a first-year teacher and will be teaching soils soon. I have never used the soil triangle but your explanation made it very clear and I'm looking forward to teaching it to my students.

    Your video is very detailed which I appreciated after watching so many others that weren't but I followed the instructions and set my timer for 15 mins when I went to mark the jar I could not see any difference in the soil. I could clearly see grains of sand in your jar but not mine. I moved in this house about 10 years ago and it's in a new neighborhood in a rural area of Ohio, zone 6a. I had to make all my flower beds myself and the dirt was heavy and compacted with lots of rocks, some bigger than the size of a softball. At 2 separate times I have had dump trucks full of dirt delivered to raise the beds a bit, I have sat for hours picking the smaller rocks out of the beds, through the years I have added bags of top soil and potting soil to the beds and then tilled. Several yrs I added mulch around the flowers to try to cut down on weeds.I have flowers in the beds and some do pretty well but the soil does seem to dry out fast, I water just about every night when it doesn't rain but I assumed it was because it gets mostly sun but possibly sandy soil is the issue. I have time on my hands now to devote to gardening and I'm trying to learn more about soil and that is why I wanted to do the test. I also ordered a soil test kit from amazon to test the soils nutrients so that I can try to add whatever it is that may be lacking. I have been reading articles and watching videos about composting but I'm afraid if I start a compost pile I will be inviting snakes into my yard (serious phobia,lol) So if my issue is sandy soil can anyone suggest an easy way to amend? When I couldn't see the difference on the test jar I thought maybe it just needed more time for everything to settle, what do you think? Or is it possible my soil is made up of mostly sand? It has been 3 hrs since I started the test and the soil is mostly the same throughout the jar except for a very fine line at the top that is a lighter color. I thought maybe I would just try it again after digging some more dirt and adding less dirt to the jar and more water, what do u think? Anyone have any suggestions on what I did wrong? Sorry such a long comment but I thought with more info a greater likelihood of a solution. Thanks!

    I just moved into my house and gained a garden with cactus and morning glories and tons of nightshade. I'm very curious of what I'm working with before I really got crazy planting stuff. THANK YOU!! I'm too cheap to buy a test soil kit. This seems more of an enjoyable learning experience too! Doing it with my daughter asap. 🌵🏜⚘🌴🌲🌻🌺🌿🍇

    I said to myself ,that triangle thingy is familiar . And then it hit me! This was one of our science modules discussing about soil types . Our teacher did not really explain to us how to use it , instead , the teacher just read the definition of each type of soil which is okay .
    But now as I was searching for plastic bricks on youtube your video popped out and here I learned more and got excited about soil and gardening than I was in class sitting and reading a paper full of texts and pictures which made me sleepy.
    Thank you so much for the help . Please make more of these videos as we have a garden here too!

    Pro Tip: Use a strainer to sift down the soil to remove large debris. Use water with a small amount of dish soap added to help create more distinctive separation between the three layers.

    Great stuff! You can improve accuracy by filling the jar with enough epoxy to get above the blend radius at the bottom. JB Weld works well if you thin it with alcohol or lacquer thinner. The manufacturer recommends 1 teaspoon thinner to 2 ounces of mixed epoxy for this purpose.

    Great video. When performing this test, I seem to have gotten 4 layers of soil. I see the layer of sand, Silt, and, I'm presuming clay. However, where you point to the clear section in your demonstration as the clay, my specimen looks like l chocolate milk, and it has been setting for two days. What could that be? Thank you for the great video.

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some clays tend to stay in solution. Try adding some table salt - it might make the clay settle out. In any event, the amount that is still floating is not that much and can be ignored.

If i take 5 samples from 5 different spots in the borders, if i mix them all together the sieve the complete batch for stones and twigs, am i defeating the object of the test and can i expect a heavy sand content result because of the sieving

      No - clay is very fine and needs that time to settle.

  • @garymaier5115
    @garymaier5115 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I tried this and, while there is a distinct line between the silt and the clay, the point at which sand turns to silt is much more gradual and less apparent because there is a lot of silt mixed into the sand. However, I can tell when there is no more sand in the silt. Is that where I mark for silt? Thanks!

    • @Gardenfundamentals1
      @Gardenfundamentals1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reality is that soil contains every particle size - not just sand and silt. There are also particles that have the size half way between. Those will settle half way between the times. You can call them small sand or big silt.

    • @karwosts1

      I see the same, tried three times. After 2 hour there's a clear demarcation between water and settlement layer, and I mark that line on the side of the jar. Come back maybe 6 hours later, and the original settlement layer has subsided by 3/4". I guess the silt might only be partially settled by the time I made the original silt marking, but not sure what causes the obvious demarcation line if it hasn't fully settled yet. Don't see any clay yet at ~20 hours, but the water is still so dark no light can penetrate it.

      You can not get rid of ants. They rarely affect plants or buds. One way to keep them off pots is to spread some Vaseline around the bottom.
