One thing I appreciate about this movie is the care they took in drawing parallels to the original, The Mark of Zorro. The dance scene, the confessional scene, all excellent call-backs to the original without being too heavy-handed about it.
When I was 14 yo, I was trying to practice and recreate the dance. I was obsessed with the movie and I wanted to dance like Catherine-Zeta. I had no Antonio Banderas, so I was dancing with the leg of my bunk bed. My mum thought I was learning to pole dance and she was terrified xD xD xD
Antonio and Catherine are a great pair in this film and this dance sequence with its stylish,spirited, harmonal dance steps & rousing music hypnotized an entire generation when the film was released. This dance and the sequence in which Antonio and Catherine meet for the first time(with him in his masked avatar!) at the horse stables, made for repeat viewing of this memorable film with crackling good dialogues!

When he saw them dancing together, Diego realized that Alejandro had BECOME extraordinary - and Diego had trained him to be such when teaching him to be the next Zorro. While he hadn't planned on his student and his daughter falling in love along the way, I'm sure Diego was nonetheless pleased at the result.
I love that Diego died happily knowing both his mantle of Zorro and his bloodline would continue through Elena and Alejandro falling in love and having a son who becomes the 3rd Zorro. He would’ve been so proud to see how well both his student turned son in law as well as his grandson turned out as the next two generations of Zorro.
2:02 Don Diego expression- he's already shown his sentimental pleasure as a father at Alejandro dancing with Elena, but now he's showing his pleasure as Alejandro's mentor in revenge- he has shown Alejandro that the dons are leaving, and he recognizes that Alejandro sized up the situation immediately and came up with a plan most likely to catch Don Rafael's attention. Cunning recognizes cunning.

do you think that he wouldn't teach him how to dance? it's a basic skill when you are part of the upper class. but, also, tango isn't that hard to dance like he does if you are used to swordfighting. you just need to add a couple, easy, tricks and use the music to adjust your tempo. I would never dare to say that it's easy but you don't need to train how to dance. only how to move.
