    What attempt did Tony make at rock n roll? Never heard of such a thing 😂

    • @karlhungus5554
      @karlhungus5554 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ralph Sharon and Bennett parted ways in 1965. There was great pressure on singers such as Lena Horne and Barbra Streisand to record "contemporary" rock songs and, in this vein, Columbia Records' Clive Davis suggested that Bennett do the same. Bennett was very reluctant and, when he tried, the results pleased no one. This was exemplified by Tony Sings the Great Hits of Today! (1970), before which Bennett became physically ill at the thought of recording. It featured covers of Beatles and other current songs and a psychedelic art cover.
      Years later, Bennett would recall his dismay at being asked to do contemporary material, comparing it to when his mother was forced to produce a cheap dress. By 1972, he had departed Columbia for the Verve division of MGM Records (Philips in the UK) and relocated for a stint in London, where he hosted a television show from the Talk of the Town nightclub in conjunction with Thames Television, Tony Bennett at the Talk of the Town. With his new label, he tried a variety of approaches, including some more Beatles material, but found no renewed commercial success, and in a couple more years he was without a recording contract.

    • @mtp4430
      @mtp4430 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess everyone just lumps “contemporary” music in with rock n roll. Rock n roll is like a I IV V, I VI IV V, I II V I, I III IV V, type chord progression. He recorded songs like MacArthur Park and Eleanor Rigby on that album. Contemporary Pop hits of the day, yes. Rock ‘n’ roll definitely not. But thank you for the info. You filled in all the blanks for me which I greatly appreciate. I like his version of MacArthur Park btw. Appreciate your help and knowledge of this great artist 👍

      @@karlhungus5554 Your Welcome. When my Mother bought that album with the pseudo psychedelic cover and an illustration of Tony in mod clothing, it just felt all wrong. The man was a great jazz and pop standard vocalist, but it’s a business, and the business was changing. However, history will show that artists like Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, survived the tidal wave of the British invasion, and kept going strong for many years there after.

    • @karlhungus5554
      @karlhungus5554 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mtp4430 Absolutely right about Tony and Frank, sir. Good music is good music. I primarily listen to them, along with the other singers and musicians from that golden age of entertainment such as Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Jo Stafford, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, and on and on. I actually never listened to either of those two Tony Bennett albums from 1970. I'll at least have to give "MacArthur Park" a listen, since you mentioned it specifically. Plus, given your former remarks about chord progression, it seems you must be a musician. So, that says a lot. I've purposely avoided listening to both Tony's and Frank's "contemporary" albums from that time, after running across a track of Sinatra singing "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown." It was just too painful. I love Jim Croce singing it, but not Frank.
