      That's awesome. I just got the Volta in the other day. It's going to come in great for us to film our basketball practices and games. We also have the issue of having to change the batteries but now with this we don't need to bring as many accessories and can film during an entire tournament now with just this device. Looking forward to trying it out this season with our basketball program.

    I have the Volta. Love it. Works flawlessly. And P.S. with the lens mod there's a thing called horizon leveling. no need for a ball joint. :) Peace Out!!!

    What do you guys think?! Would you go for the GoPro Volta or the setup that I recommended? I want to hear what you would choose! CORRECTION: When the Volta is plugged directly into the GoPro, it is controlling it through the cable. It switches to Bluetooth when disconnected or connected via the MediaMod👍

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just once, I want to see GoPro perform a slam dunk. I don't think they have come close since the 3+ Black (best tech at the time). To me, the Volta seems like a stripped-down Karma Grip (the only deletion being the mechanical stabilization). But it also adds the 1/4-20 and tripod functionality, which could be a big deal for some people. Still, it feels like they kinda re-cycled an old idea. There's nothing wrong with that, but the cons you cited are enough to detract me. A few more bucks in parts (ball-head, telescopography and perhaps a gimbal option), they might have quite a product. It falls short, though. As it stands, your setup checks many of the boxes... except for in a continuous time-lapse situation or in low-light. The Volta, at least, ticks one of those boxes.

      Great video! Since I already bought the media mod, ulanzi light and falcon plus gimbal. Don't need it. Plus bought the nice Enduro batteries, great vid too btw.
      If someone new didn't have anything, it's a great all in one package.
      But if you have time to shop around you can get better items for less. ( Cheaper battery grips out there and I just use my phone if I need a wireless remote. Plus, with a gimbal you can get wider angle shots or night time stabilization! And it also acts as a charger. )

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tjthedogtrainer The big takeaway is the Enduro batteries. They both extend individual battery life, but also seem to keep the 10 a touch cooler. If one was to spend an extra $20 on four batteries, they'd be much better off, in the long run.

      Great video as always David. The Volta as well as the 3-way both have a place in my arsenal. I was intrigued by the Volta since I do most of my recordings behind the bicycle handle bars. Have the ability to extend battery life is a great option when out on long bike rides. Carrying less batteries and not having to change them out makes this a better option at least for me.

  • @younmeequalsthree
    @younmeequalsthree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Thanks for another great review. I agree, once I saw there was no way to extend the grip it was a no for me. I figure eventually they will update this as well. If the three way and Volta have a child, I'm 100% in. I almost always use the media mod so I hate changing batteries. GoPro, if you are still reading comments here, put the door on the other side so I can replace batteries without having to take the media mod off the mount, pull off the media mod, replace the battery, then put everything back together a gain.

    I have been using the Volta for a bit and I use it to follow my kids around and timelapses. Coupled with the Max Lens Mod I get great stabilization. Also, I plug my Hero 6 into the Volta and it will charge it too. I agree the ball head would be nice. I use the cable to control the camera. Bluetooth seems just a bit slower when using the QuikCapture feature. I also use Hindsight when recording my kids so I don't miss anything and Hindsight is a battery hog so being attached to the Volta is nice when out with the kids. Always enjoy your videos.

    I’d go with the Volta thing just because I need a 1/4-20 mount to quickly swap between the 1/4-20 magnets I use to mount the camera for inside cab shot and tripods for outside shots.
    Everything around me when filming is iron so I use magnets a ton!

    Hi David. My Volta arrived yesterday and it does look pretty cool but I haven't had a chance to test it out yet. I think you may be right about the extender but I guess we'll find out. The big thing for me is the internal battery. In my experience GoPro batteries are hopeless and don't last very long before expanding and needing to be discarded. I have had to buy several replacements for my Hero 8 and Hero 9 and I'm hoping that the Volta will cut down on that cost. One thing from your video, the remote does apparently work through the cable but Bluetooth kicks in when you disconnect it from the grip. Having said that it would be fantastic if the Bluetooth on the remote could be connected to Hero 8 or before or if there was a multi-cam option on the remote. the Great video as always though. Thanks for the review.

    Great review, David. I wasn’t going to buy the Volta but after watching your’s & Danny Black’s review I did jump on the wagon & order one. I like long bike rides, hikes, runs, etc. so I usually carry the Shorty with 2 or 3 extra batteries & that works well for me so this seemed like something that puts all those in one tool I can just grab & throw in the pocket to replace all of those. I also think using the extra feet for a Snap mount or connecting to my Peak Design Capture with POV mount will be pretty handy too.

    A great informative video. I bought the Volta because my operation means that my "over the road" kit now no longer needs three batteries, the remote, hand grip/tripod, battery charger and power bank. And this in turn, makes my backpack that much lighter. However, there is one other negative that may affect some of the community. Although Volta can be used as a remote control, it can only be in use with one camera at a time. As opposed to "The Remote" which can control multiple cameras simultaneously.

    I have a 9 day hiking trip to Utah at the end of the month. Using the media mod, the Volta will be very useful so I’m not carrying/changing/charging batteries on extended hikes. Regarding horizon leveling, that could be done within camera on the GP10. Combined with a powered mic (Rhodes Wiresless 2) and snap mount system on the retractable feet, that’s going to be a hard system to beat for versatility

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retiringearly Only if you have a Media Mod. The mic adapter isn't going to cut it, as it doesn't power the cams without often temporarily bricking the cam's audio (the USB port on the adapter is useless). Hi David,
    There was a tripod that Moza made years ago as I have it for at least 3yrs that had a 6800mAh capacity that I used for GP7/8/9 and it had a ball head mount but no extended selfie stick.
    I’ll say if you don’t use the media mod, changing batteries is abt the same but the inconvenience of carrying them will be the difference. Especially if you’re going with family and wearing swim trunks with no pockets and don’t want to bring a sling.
    I would say if remote is not your think, then using the 3-way grip or the Ulanzi MT46 metal extended tripod (can carry heavy load to add other small cams). Add on the Octulus 2 battery pack, 5000mAh. Just a little more weight and no wires and you can use it to charge any other action cam, mobile phones, or other electronics.
    I just add adapters like USBC female to Lightning male for my iP12PM and/or USBC female to microUSB (as we still have some outdated electronics using this, ahem Sony). It comes with a handy right angle USBC adapter.
    My setup is the Ulanzi MT46 + Octulus Quest 2 battery pack + GP remote and although it is not integrated like the Volta, it gives me flexibility to use GO2, A2, 1R/RS, etc.

      @DavidManningvlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude, you have a hell of a setup! And the extra capacity in that 6,800mAh battery would be welcomed! I don't think I would kill the Volta on a one day adventure, but I might get close!

    Thanks for the review! I am going to try out the Volta. the plan is to slap a snap mount on the spring loaded bit and be able to use it with the chest strap on my mtb rides. That, along with my 400g sd card should easily last a whole ride or race. If I do use it as a tripod, I won't have to worry about it being level because I pretty much keep my lens mod on my gp9 fulltime.

    I was on the fence - but your review covered everything I need to know - no way to level the camera, no extension, no thanks. I don't often use my GoPros handheld [they attached to my helmet or motorcycle], but when I do, I need something where I can walk around and not be fatigued by straight-arming the thing. The spring-loaded feet are nice though - that makes it easy to mount 2 cameras close to each other for a comparison shot.

  • @carpenuctum

    My set-up:
    I have this Ulanzi powerbank grip - 10,000 MAH which also has a screw option at the bottom. It comes with a cord long enough if you want to attach an extendable arm. I can just change the battery cover with the one with a pass through door for usb-c connection so I can use the gropro while charging or even without a gopro battery. I can attach the magnetic quick realease at the top end of the power bank so I dont need to screw and unscrew if Im going to change grips/tripod or attack a ball head base. It may not have the extension as well but I dont really vlog while walking so It really is not much of a big concern for me. And as you said, having to do the controls on the gopro itself is not much a big deal so there's that. All these Ulanzi provides.

    Thanks very much for this breakdown. I was very lucky. I didn't do my homework beforehand, but came across a GoPro 11 Black kit with the Volta at a huge discount. The extra battery life was very attractive to me as I film wildlife documentaries and I am away from power for long periods of time. However, what I really wanted was to be able to put the camera in a log that I carry around and get B-roll shots of animals from close range beside water holes etc. whilst I film with the main camera in a hide. The Bluetooth on the Volta is perfect for that!! I've just done some tests with the camera in different rooms and the Bluetooth (off the camera) still triggered it. Awesome. Then, I'll be able to collect the camera in periodically... charge it back up from the Volta and put it back out. In theory, it sounds a perfect fit for my work. I'll try it in the field next week and find out.

  • @Javiercav

    Also I think that GoPro could add a "virtual ballhead". Sometimes the camera angle is just a few degrees. And the high resolution of the sensors make posible to just horizon level the image in software by cropping a little ( not as much as the linear +horizon level mode)
    That way you can mount the camera and press a button on the screen to lock the horizon cropping just the necesary for that angle , a really usefull feature for tripod mount or just when you place the GoPro over a rock/tree. Etc.

    I can see 2 scenarios where this has an advantage. Long duration time lapse, and placing the camera in a hard to reach place, such as on a ceiling for an all day time lapse. For most purposes I prefer the real Remote as it controls up to 5 GoPros at once, and has more functionality. For most scenarios the 3-Way plus Remote remains the king of versatile mounts.

    I love my One R and was interested in seeing if there is a visual difference between a One R and a One RS if they both have the new 4k Lens on them!

    I have 3-Way 2.0 but ordered Volta on the other day since I film sunset time-lapse using GoPro HERO10. There is a way to solve leveling issue on Volta by mounting 3-Way Pivot Arm 😁

    I’ve been looking for a single tool that offers all day power and ability to mount it to the shoulder strap. The blue tooth remote ability is just a cherry on top of the whipped cream. So, I jumped on the Volta to streamline my kit. I’m taking it out this weekend on a backpacking trip. So, I’ll let you know if I’m happy or disappointed. 🤪

    I was going to preorder this but at the price point and with already having 8+ batteries for either generation Hero 5 and beyond... also having the extendable tripod that comes with the hero 10 as well as the floating grip mounts that come with the hero 8 &9 😅 I just saw all the bases were covered. However I do want to get that charging box you had just shown the other day 👊😁

    My main use case would be snowboarding & would certainly reduce carrying batteries. I also have 2.0 3way mount, which I’m not overly keen on, I’ve ordered the Volta purely for the charging aspect & the ability to perform Timelapses . I dare say someone will come up with a way to add a selfie stick to the 1/4 20 on the base.

    Having a ball mount on the end would be simpler maybe, using the swivel head in conjunction with the normal up/down function gives the ability to level the camera with no issues as the swivel while it locks to 90 degree increments doesn't have to be.

    Yes, I will buy Volta. I can have a longer battery without carrying too many batteries for long recording long-bike sportive events or fondo races. The ability to press the record button without stopping my bike or falling off my bike is a plus. The additional GoPro mount on the side can be used to mount Came on! Klickfix quick release on the handlebar for a quick grab whenever I want to do a vlog. Long battery and easy start/stop and the ability to grab for vlog mode and static handlebar shot without putting down my feet.

    I prefer to have the Volta. I hate having to change out batteries, especially at the beach. I don’t do blogging, so having a long reach doesn’t interest me. Yes, I do agree that having a ball head while in tripod mode would be great. By the way, I just ordered the Volta. Looking forward to using it. I appreciate the video. You make excellent points. Much Mahalo. PS. I just read Octane’s comment. There is a horizontal leveling. No need for a ball head. 👍

    Well, you just added another tripod to the Volta which made it more bulky but also long enough to set up height for Timelapse…question really > can the Volta be charged (I assume yes) with an external power bank ? Via usb c ? Making for a sweet longer uninterrupted shot….
    My current set up includes Hero 8 black with all the media mods on a shorty for vlogging and 3-way arm for time lapses.
    Does the go-pro hero 10 with Volta sound like a good upgrade ?!

    It would be cool if it had the ball head for sure. Also, maybe a cold shoe or a new GoPro accessory that would add a cold shoe for an external mic. Or, if they just wanna send out an update to the camera that would add a stereo option to the media mod instead of just the front or back mic options, that would be rad too. As of now, the battery grip doesn’t fit for me.

    I respect your opinions on the GoPro. You taught me alot. But I know who wants 4 hours of continious recording. I do. I'm just a dad trying to see his two little girls growing up. I'm not good with editing and I really don't want to be. I'm the person who puts the camera in the tripod and hits record. I just want to look back at birthday parties, holidays, and even mundane moments. I know 20 years from now when my kids are grown up and have their own families, 4 hour recording blocks of them when they were younger, will be golden.

    I like the idea of this grip, but as it was pointed out in another video, you have to charge the Volta. When it dies, it dies and you can’t use it. I wish GoPro would have used 2 of the Hero10 batteries in the grip so that you could swap them out when you’re out filming or want to charge them when traveling. That, plus a ball head, and you’ve got a heck of a product.

    When the Volta is connected to the camera, which power source does it draw from first, the camera battery or the Volta battery? It would be disappointing if you decided to use the camera remotely at some point but the camera battery was dead while the Volta still had plenty of life left.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's tricky, because it seems like the GoPro is pulling from the internal battery at the same time that the Volta is recharging that internal battery. When I used it for a full day, my GoPro stayed at 98% most of the day, then when I went to higher frame rates, it dropped to 96%. But between clips in both situations, it charged the internal battery back up to full👍

    I bought a different brand selfie stick, the handler floating handle wich also serves as a not bad walking around handle and 2 spare enduro batteries. I opted for the handler and extra batteries because most of my filming will be in the Philippines and I'll be in the water quite a bit. The volta is cool but can't be used under water and seeing as I'll be out on my boat alot I need something I can just jump in the ocean with any time.

    I'm 100% down for a Volta XL. If they were able to hide the charging cable within a telescopic neck (think Zhiyun Smooth gimbals), and either have a ball-head or the old ball-head cold-shoe mount included, then that would be ideal. Half the reason those Zhiyuns are selling so well is because of their extendability, even if it is just 15-30cm on average. Otherwise, the weather-sealed connection is fantastic, and incredibly helpful!

    I have been looking for some kind of GoPro grip that has those pop up “feet” for AGES!!! I want to put a snap mount on those feet and attach a snap mount to my backpack strap mount. That way I can grab the GoPro off the backpack strap with a quick yank and have a grip to film with. But… I don’t want the whole extra heavy, non waterproof Volta grip… Any recommendation for a grip or some sort of dual mount adapter that can accomplish the same thing but isn’t the Volta?

    I miss your point that the GoPro has a horizon correction from Hero9, so that kite does not work. Second point, I use my mini tripod as an extension for the volta and then my arm is also lower, but also have the neck strap, the clip and the backpack stick to prevent all that overload from your arm. I also sometimes put down the Volta and shots where I film myself that I walk past, that alternates in watching vlogs. Also moving the Volta with the Hero9+ from low to high when you approach a passage gate, all kinds of added movements in attractive filming for the viewers.

    I bought the Volta after your review but found my favorite option - The Snap mount - DOES NOT WORK - with the Volta. So, I have to manually take the GoPro on and off and I also realize it's a pain to take on and off with the media mod on it and the just barely long enough thumbscrew. Does GoPro even use their own products?!
