So... I FINALLY Played The Steam Deck...

  • The Steam Deck manages to connect my love of handheld gaming to console quality titles much like my other handheld loves such as the PS Vita. The difference maker here is Valve's ability to not sacrifice the game's performance to make it run on the device. I was pleased by titles both past and present as I ventured into uncharted territory.

    Matty, the "easiest" way to play GamePass on that would be to add Microsoft Edge as a non-steam game.
    MS officially supports cloud gaming on Linux via the Linux version of the Edge browser.
    The hardest part of that whole process would be installing Edge.

    • @JonGodcommadore65
      @JonGodcommadore65 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed. I cannot see MS doing native support for a linux machine unless windows 12 has a Linux kernel. The steam deck is basically Valve's 'DirextX box' but for Vulkan.

    • @Zastrutzki
      @Zastrutzki 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And even that is easy. First time I did it I went through a guide on how to install it on Arch. I was messing around with pacman and after that I was even compiling my own builds. One system wipe later I just found it in the application installer and had it up and running in 30 seconds flat.

    SteamDeck is effectively a PC console, without the Windows bloatware. I am a PC gamer, but as I generally play indies or older games, I don't need top end graphics, this and it's future iterations are probably going to replace my desktop going forward as the most expensive Steamdeck is cheaper than even the cheapest gaming desktops. You can even install word processors and browsers and use it as your work PC.

      Handhelds are easily my favourite kind of console, still carry my vita and 3ds around the backward compatibility is just fantastic and emulators too are a real plus.

    • @leeartlee915
      @leeartlee915 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lolcat I came to the party late. I grew up with the original Gameboy and that *thing* left such a bad taste in my mouth for handheld gaming, I just wrote off every handheld for decades. And then the pandemic happened, I started getting really bored, and wanted some projects. Blah, blah, blah, I ended up buying several GBA, DS lites, DSi XLs, several 3DS systems, and a Vita to polish it off. Now I play them more than either my Series X or PS5 for the exact reasons you said: the backwards compatibility. Once modded, the 3DS and Vita are beasts. I have slowly started to play my current gen consoles more and more but for a few years there, those handhelds were glued to me.
      I will say that one of the benefits of not touching any of the handhelds for about two decades is I have amazing libraries that I never touched. It’s like discovering 8 different consoles at once. Going back and playing through every Fire Emblem ever made (including the fan translations of GBA and Super Famicom games) has been a ball.

    As a Linux gamer for over 5 years, the Steam Deck is fantastic. The rapidity of development of Proton/Steamplay(which the deck uses to run Windows games) since the Steam Deck was announced has been amazing including AMD FSR for almost every game on steam (even ones that don't support it) using the ProtonGE fork . The development of MESA and Vulcan drivers has also greatly accelerated. I wan't to eventually buy a deck for myself but just the interest that it's sparked in Linux gaming really makes me happy. Elden Ring i get 60 fps at 4k on high. Witcher 3 is 60 fps 4k on ultra, Path of Exile runs 100% maxed and never dips below 60 even in Delirium maps(About 10% better performance then I got in windows 10), and Cyberpunk i get 60 fps @ 1440p FSRed up to 4k. Before the steamdeck I had to run through a few hoops to get decent performance but now it's so good. I'm thinking once they release their next version of Steam OS for PC people will actually be much more inclined to check it out since the deck has opened so many people's eyes.

    For me, Vita is generation 3-5, plus select 6 collections, and specific 7 cross-platform games. Steam Deck is Gen 6-9, even though it can do anything. Between those two and the Switch, and the fact I can press a button to turn this thing into a full on desktop... I'm floored. I love this thing. It finally came in the mail, 4 days ago, I ordered it last August. At long last. Worth the wait.

    I don't know that I would agree with going for the most expensive model. For one, it sounds like Matty doesn't know that all of the Steam Decks come with the carrying case, the 512Gb version just has a special case with a different logo and interior. I preordered the 256Gb, and almost regret it now, I kind of wish I had preordered the 64Gb and then upgraded the internal SSD myself, as many others have done. It is cheaper to do it that way then to order the 256Gb. But I am not about to lose my place in the queue just to save a little bit of money. I have heard mixed things about the different displays, but I don't know that I would personally care, and if you don't have the other screen to compare to, you will probably like it either way. I have played on a friend's Steam Deck, and it is only the 64Gb, but the display looked just fine to me. I don't expect to be playing it outside or anything, so I don't think glare will be an issue for me, personally. That's just my 2 cents on the matter.

    • @darkheathen6765
      @darkheathen6765 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it's really not. The 512 you have the anti glare glass and you can throw in a 1tb card anytime. If you like to tinker I guess go for the 64gb but why? The 512 has enough space for the time to play the games you want without going through bs. Don't see the logic at all. Yeah you can 2tb but why? Just uninstall games if you need space.

    • @KuittheGeek
      @KuittheGeek 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darkheathen6765 I would agree that you can just uninstall games. Why would I go cheaper? I'm an engineer, and I could save a significant amount of money that I could put towards games, accessories, etc. If you are not in any way technically savvy, don't open it. I don't think you would need to be too technically inclined to open it and swap the drive, and from what I remember, Valve would still do warranty repair as long as it is sent back with the original parts. I personally don't see the risk, but that's me.
      And I don't see the anti glare screen being worth $200. You can get the 256gb SSD for $45, and I think I would get a 1tb SD card either way, whether I got the 64 or the 512. So for me, and I'm sure many people like me, it would make more sense to save the money and apply it to other things.

      @maxaugustsson6150 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KuittheGeek We all make mistakes in the heat of passion jimbo. I went for the 256Gb model myself because I just presumed that you couldn’t upgrade the internal storage. Though I don’t really regret it. I’m way too scared of messing something up, like breaking something or not putting it together as sturdy as it shipped and things along that line. So I’d rather save myself from the headache, pay a little extra and buy a micro-sd once it’s needed.

    Along the direction of getting away from the PC desk, how does it hook up to a TV.

      Official dock is releasing with a HDMI port on.
      Fallout 4 works with mods, should be many gameplay videos on youtube.

    Love my Steam deck and I wasn’t thinking I would given how I hate my Switch Lite. I played through Shadow of Mordor over about 2 weeks on the Steam Deck. I love that the controls just feel right and my hands don’t fatigue easily using it. I found the Switch Lite controls to feel so awkward and shit and my hands never got used to it and I couldn’t enjoy even a single game on the switch.
    The screen isn’t very vibrant in colors but that maybe the game Shadow of Mordor which is just a very dark muted game.
    I don’t normally have time to beat any game in 2 weeks while busy with work but the Steam Deck let me do it! I played in my car and on the go when I could get time in.
    Also passes the wife test. I was able to play with AirPods lying in bed next to my wife while she was already asleep. Never woke her up. The buttons aren’t clacky or noisy…at least not yet.
    Heat hasn’t been a problem. Battery life hasn’t been a problem for me as I don’t game for really long sessions and charge it constantly.
    I have an international flight in 2 weeks and this thing will be awesome to have on a flight

The only reason I was going to get the steam deck was it was faster than the Win Max but when the new one was announced I made sure I had that day off and got in early. At first I thought I wanted to support Valve but then I realized I buy ALL my PC games through them anyway and on top of that Valve sells the Steam Deck at a loss. Also, just a few days ago it was revealed Valve is working with GPD to get SteamOS running on the Win Max 2. Pretty much every game outside of emulation I play on my WinMax 2 will come from Steam so yeah, they aren't loosing me by me canceling my steamdeck.

That's one thing I like about the Switch actually is that the child-friendly controls work better for me.
