Living in Thailand is an aspiration for many people and for that many that also means working online as a freelancer or entrepreneur.
The thought of going at it alone and chasing your dreams can be terrifying, however, the consequences of not doing so I believe are far greater.

I just quit my job this morning and then I see this video on my feed. I have been planning on moving to Thailand for the past few months but my job (although very toxic) was holding me back because I felt the need to continue saving money. People are so accustomed to seeking job security and a steady income. I feel so relieved now and feel like I can dedicate more time to my passions.
Thank you so much for your content!

This is a very critical message: you start teaching Cambly and doing TH-cam and trying every avenue, including working for other ex-pats, trying any kind of online paid gig, it doesn’t take much to get your bills paid in Thailand and that’s the magic of online nomad work, thanks for the encouragement.

You're 100% correct! I've lived in Africa, Middle East and now Thailand and life couldn't be better, the adventure is breathtaking, scary at times but it's the real world out here. No welfare to fall back on we are on our own. I think people living a western lifestyle are far too comfortable in their environment the world is a scary place for most people in the West with their sense of security and familiar surroundings (Boring!) I tell people not to think so much a $1000 per month is doable in third world countries, save and just Do It...get on with it before they die... 😂

Great video....totally agree that sacrifice is key...to gain something, you have to give something else up. For me, that meant shutting the door on all distractions, be it work, phone, video games, nonsense TV and just working at something online persistently. It pays off eventually but you need to give some other things up. Not necessarily permanently, just while you're building everything up

Everything stated is true. There are some missing points to consider. Retirement and savings are completely missed. If you are under 65 years old and not cashed up, working online will service your needs if you have the discipline to make it happen - it is afterall a real business even if it is freelance work. When you hit 65, most do not want to work anymore, they want to truly retire. Most foreign nationals from the USA, UK, Australia, etc. will get some sort of government pension which is generally enough to survive but not save any money.
Things to consider. Moving to Thailand, if you are going to stay and your younger, you need buy (own it 100%) your own place eventually and plan on staying there till your gone, this can be a condo, a house (you will not own it, your Thai wife or family will if you are fortunate enough) - this reduces your reoccurring monthly cost when you get older and tired of working. You will need transportation, a motor bike gets its done, I personally would not even consider not owning some type of car or truck or SUV in addition to a motor bike. Just like anywhere, you have car insurance, health insurance (now mandatory in Thailand for all foreigners even if on a marriage or retirement visa), you must eat, you have utility bills, etc. It is cheaper depending on your standard of living.
My Thai wife and I have a very high monthly/yearly budget by expat standards living in Thailand that is achieved by owning and operating multiple businesses that took 10 years to develop - none are in Thailand. When we moved to Thailand from the USA after 10 years living in Florida, we owned everything in Thailand - house, car, vacuum cleaner - it was 100% paid in full no reoccurring cost to concern ourselves with beyond standard stuff - got off the plane, family picked us up and took us straight to our home everything waiting and new condition. My recommendation if you want success, build your online business before you leave for Thailand, buy a condo or house you can live in for years in cash before moving to Thailand, have at least 100k USD in cash before moving to Thailand including that business you worked on to make money every month - maybe some long term investments such as stocks. Take the time to build this up so you do not struggle in Thailand and then must go home broke and start over. Less than 1% of the people we know make it long term in Thailand even if they showed up with 50k USD - they eventually run out of money and don't have any way to make any money locally - unless they are already on a government pension, and if that is all they have, they are broke monthly and cannot afford anything; these are the "farangs" you see sitting at the bar 24/7/365 talking about the good old days and all they own is a broken down motor bike and rent a cheap condo for 150 a month and wear the same cloths every day of the week, they are everywhere - they get sick, they cannot even afford to go see a doctor even when the prices are 50% less.
Proper planning will make you successful - my hat is off to @Brett Dev for your honesty and motivational conversation. Everyone's situation is different to include their tolerance for risk. Evaluate yours, plan, stick by your decision, live your dreams.

Focussing on work whilst traveling is NOT EASY. I started my Digitial Nomad journey and only can survive because I've already built a $1500 passive income business(my website) if you don't have a plan or any clients/or your own business it will be challenging to maintain that lifestyle.
If yo have savings like Brett mentioned it's okay but only go without a big buffer if you already earn money.

    Well done Brett.
Basically saying don’t come to Chiang Mai to toss it off.... (we’ve both met enough of them). If you wanna earn your living and make a success of your business, you damn well have to work for it, and that pretty much stands for anywhere you locate to in the world.
Best plan is to start your business back home first and gain a bunch of regular clients so you have work from the get go.... And don’t come with a few quid/bucks in your back pocket.... save up enough for at least 6 months living costs before you fly out.
All the best Brett.... meet up for a pint or a coffee when I (eventually) can get back over there mate 👍

    • @brett_dev

    • @petersellers8415
      @petersellers8415 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I just think (although no essential) it takes out a lot of risk Brett... if you can relocate with a degree of confidence that you already have some work and a bit of cash coming in.
But the most important thing is to not relocate without some savings and to do your homework so you can realistically budget living costs for 6-12 months.

21 years old currently and I have been thinking about this since i was 18 but the biggest problem is money at the moment because I think it is pretty safe bet to get 1000-1500 a month (euros) to even start moving. If anyone want to share something I am open and waiting to reply. Great video!

Hey Brett, what about renting a home when you don't have a job to reassure the owner ? Here in France if you don't have a job, landlords won't let you rent their flat. Btw I love those jungle sounds too :)

I just found your channel today. I discovered many things in Thailand. One thing is that some Thais are not lazy - kee-gee-at. I also discovered all Thais are very creative and resourceful due to environmental pressures. You may discover many things inside yourself when you reflect on the lives of such Thai people. Of course, some Thai people may show you the obverse side of the coin due to these same environmental pressures. Hopefully you won't become a statistic. My advice is to only dive in if you've tested the water. Results may vary.

If I was there and trying to do this I would probably be annoyed. But, from our perspective, it’s awesome. The bird sounds I mean

My problem today is that I make 1k per month freelancing and have 2k savings. I don't have enough savings. I'm 21 years old and this is my first year freelancing, once I have at least 5k of savings I'm going.

Great, and informative video. Im 34, and my experience is in Civil Litigation 'debt colletion' i left that last year and have been travelling since including a month in Thailand. I aim to live in Thailand, but I'm struggling to find anything without a degree. Do you think you may be able to / have connections that could help me out? I'm a very hard worker, and willing to start at the absolute bottom.
    Thank you in advance,

You have quite a few subscribers.
I'm one more today. I am booked in early January. Hopefully the sitch gets better. I can't see doing quarantine. I'm vaccinated.
Anyway, what if I was a swim Instructor? Could I gig there? Like do lessons at people's homes or communities or condos etc. Private service type. I could probably charge between 25-50 us per lessons. One or two a day and I could live. Do people do this? Or would I just get deported? Lol
I am not good with programing or web design or most things on computer. I could do customer service online? Maybe answer questions or help client inquiries etc.
    Any suggestions?
I know this is a long comment. Thanks for reading. Your subject was interesting. But I need more time. Lol help I mean.

The bird in the background is a Gawow. Guess how it got that name! I have one right outside my bedroom often. 24/7 some days. Ha ha.
