Diomedes was always my favorite too. It’s funny that you find the way Agamemnon interacts with his soldiers weird while I totally understand. I’ve been in the Navy for 24 years. This is just how soldiers rip into each other even now. It is really fascinating that it’s no different than 5000 years ago.

Agamemnon really shows here why he is a great leader of men. He clearly knows how to rouse each of his generals, and their men who follow them, up bc he knows them so well. He uses: shame to piss off those who are weak and want to prove themselves; familial pride for those men who want to carry on their father's kleos (glory); embarrassment for those who are confident so they dont go into battle with a spirit of complacency.
I think the reason Homer gives us some background into the character that's just about to be killed is to humanize them and remind the listener that they're all people. Fast forward to modern day Hollywood movies, where the main character is a native English speaker, killing dozens of unimportant "bad guys", while the nemesis will (on occasion) have a foreign accent; an "American lives first" sort of thing. Homer got it right; he doesn't take sides (most of the time), he shows things as they are. The gory details are probably a reminder to the listener to not romanticize war, as it may end very badly for you, as it did for many of Homer's characters.
You have bestowed great duty on yourself, and just like Uncle Ben believed that if you could do good things for other people, you had a moral obligation to do those things, or like the OG know it, “ With great power comes great responsibility.” I probably should be using this video to finish my homework, but I am writing this comment here.
I've seen saving private Ryan about 90 times. No Battle of Homer is going to beat the beach scene at the beginning of the movie for gore. Oh yeah. Believe it. Spielberg 1 - Homer O 🤪
