I remember, about 25 years ago, learning about the K'ung San, who still live in the Kalahari Desert of southwestern Africa. Their culture is, perhaps, the oldest continuous, uninterrupted culture in the world. And, given that Africa is the mother of us all, their culture is probably closer to what all our ancestors lived than any other we know about now. Like the Jomon, of Japan, they never developed agriculture, but they lived a rich, healthy life in relatively stable communities whose locations varied little over time. They were not perfect, but they lived well. And their culture survived for 10s of thousands of years. Unfortunately, about 50 years ago, the governments that rule in that part of Africa, started to "domesticate" them. The result is what thousands of years of history could not do before, the virtual destruction of their traditional way of life. Now, most of them live in poverty on reserves of one sort or another. To make a bit of money, they sometimes perform manual labor for their more "advanced" neighbors, who basically hold them in contempt for being a "backward" people. Sigh.

You ask the guy for Assyrian books for newbies, and he gives you general surveys of the entire freaking Ancient Near East! Lol! "The Might that Was Assyria" H.W.F. Saggs . It has its limitations yet is free of the modern political dreck that infuses almost everything we read these days. Amazon sellers want $82 bucks for used copies, search used bookstores or go to your local University library instead. I think you can read it for free online as well. "Ancient Iraq" Georges Roux A concise general survey of the ANE, yet you can just read the Assyrian chapters and you're off to the races. Assyria had three capitals: one military, one administrative and one cultural. When Ninevah was destroyed, it was never reoccupied, hence a giant time capsule! We have the library of Assurbanipal, a treasure of limitless value. For popular culture, Pazuzu, an Assyrian storm demon, is the villain of The Exorcist. His nemesis was a female demon akin to Lilith, so mothers wore his amulet to protect their babies. Hence the line from the film "Evil against Evil" Annoy your friends with your newfound wisdom when watching this old flick.

Do you have any advice on how best to read and maximise the retention of all the facts. My memory is so bad!lol Thanks

The movie Princess Mononoke is sorta a reimagining of the meeting between the Emishi/Jomon people and the Iron Age Yayoi, It’s crazy to think that the Japanese and the Ainu of Hokkaido can be considered heirs of the Jomon, and how luck it is that we still have memory of these people

From my recollection of reading the Odyssey as a teen, the impression I got from the women were quite negative. They were detractors from Odysseus getting home. They were there to make Penelope look that much better. Now, I understand it is more complex but that was my initial impression. I would love a modern female empowering version of Medusa but I understand for that version to work it would mean modernizing all the gods and goddesses and essentially change the narrative of the mythology altogether. It would be a new mythology. And I accept that. Haha.

It is a bit frustrating how they didn’t include any gods/goddesses, mythological characters in the movie. However, it helps us kind of visually see if the gods were actually there, or if it’s really the mortals fighting with themselves.

I was looking forward this book ever since I heard about it was coming out and pre-ordered it as soon as possible. A big mistake on part no doubt for setting my hopes too high and I'm by no means blaming the author who seems very lovely. Personally, I was quite put off by the immediate attraction to Jason to the point when she thinks about how badly she wants him to touch her, even if it comes in the form of a strike. The whole initial attraction thing felt very chic lit to me (it's a legitimate genre that has it's place of course, I just didn't expect a mythology fiction to read like one lol) in the way it was described. The use of "OK" in a story like this one also took me out, and all in all, I decided to put the book away before finishing it. Really hope it's going to find a reader who's going to enjoy it more. This one just simply wasn't my cup of tea. Still, very cool interview!
