I congratulate Russell for being the better man. Cruise is clearly delusional and a key leader of a growing worldwide cult (scientology). Russell is a rational thinker when it comes to religion and he did well to keep this interview on the intellectual level.
Geotubest As an anti-theist, I agree with you. All religions are delusional cults. My original comment could have added this concept, but I chose to focus on just one of the many different religious cults (scientology). Christianity and Islam remain the worse of the bunch, particularly with their brainwashing of weak minded adults and children.

That's a bit of a fallacy. Destructive cults can take in anyone, no matter how mentally strong they are or think they are -- anyone can be baited if they're offered the right bait.
Mr Russell is a rare breed in these present times. Sensitive matter of some subjects are typically handled without diplomacy or gentleman like behavior. Mr Russell displayed an extraordinary example of gentleman type behavior when speaking about Tom Cruise and his religious beliefs not undermining his choice or speaking about him in a disrespectful way. Good job Mr. Russel! I would love to sit down and conversate with you. How refreshing that would be.
Yes he is, I lived in the same town in northern NSW as him and his parents, you would bump into him at the local shop every now and then, he was always very approachable.
When I was a young London cop (I'm an older one now), early 2000 during the MI2 premiere in Leicester square, whilst standing on the red carpet outside the theatre (tit hat on, etc) Russel asked me to take a photo with a fan. I didn't recognise him at the time as his hair was longer than when on Gladiator. I gave him my hat to hold, took the picture and finally recognised him when he said "cheers mate". We laighed about it. Great film and indeed a great natural guy
Every time I see Russell Crowe in interviews I get the impression that he is stand up fellow with a good head on his shoulders and this is no exception. He even made me think a bit better about Tom Cruise.
Why would you feel badly about Cruise? He goes out of his way to help people-even to the point of pulling over his car and saving them-and he never has a bad word to say about anybody. He is hated because he once said he thought therapy and drugs weren't helpful, he jumped on a couch to declare his love for someone, and because he practices a religion that most people don't believe in. I guess those are major crimes to some people?
@@RobertGregoryBrowne Who ever said I felt badly about Tom Cruise. If you read my note again, you will see that it reads, "...think a bit better..." That is a far cry from feeling bad. @@1matdad362i really liked that movie too, it’s one of my favorites, the cinematography really stood out to me, it was just beautiful, gorgeous area in France, and such…well, I don’t really know that much about film terminology, but it was very warm bright colored lighting, atmosphere, that really set the positive mood of the film…it really stuck out when they would switch to the London scenes, which were all gloomy lighting, and sterile looking…so the contrast between two were quite dramatic. Made me want to go to the south of France, and fall in love with a beautiful French girl. Lol. That French actress was great in it too. Loved the outdoor theater science, just such a great lighthearted movie, feel good movie…..but it got horrible reviews strangely enough. Critics hated it, and I think it was a bust at theaters. But yeah, obviously I REALLY enjoyed it, and I think your comment was first time I ever noticed another person who liked that film.😂. Of all the great Russell crow movies, you r recommendation is ‘A Good Year ‘….hahaha!!! And I think that’s awesome, cuz I have to admit, it’s my favorite movie of his. Check out the movie SideWays, if you have it, it’s about wine, but it’s a dark comedy, but it’s great!!
I had a Russell Crowe phase when was in college (started with 'A Beatiful Mind' which I still think one of the most touching, brilliantly humane and oddly humble movie I've ever seen) when I was completely infatuated with the man. I remember that now and that crush seems justified. Such an open, upfront and intelligent human being!

"Scientology is a body of religious beliefs and practices invented in May 1952 by American author L. Ron Hubbard (1911-86). Hubbard initially developed a program of ideas called Dianetics, which was distributed through the Dianetics Foundation. The foundation soon entered bankruptcy, and Hubbard lost the rights to his seminal publication Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health in 1952. He then recharacterized the subject as a religion and renamed it Scientology, retaining the terminology, doctrines, the E-meter, and the practice of auditing. Within a year, he regained the rights to Dianetics and retained both subjects under the umbrella of the Church of Scientology." - according to Wikipedia So THAT is how it became a "religion". Seems like a monetary loophole, a company restructuring or just a way of moving things around within the legal system until Hubbard could reacquire his assets/work. Once it was labeled as a Religion, then that's where we get the weirdness taking off. I don't trust new, religions/cults - they just don't measure up to the scrutiny and this "Scientology" is no different. I still say that it's a CULT.
Tom Cruise obviously recognised that Russell is his own man and acted accordingly, good story imo,and for those saying Cruise would only look for a weak person, well he's the most down to earth actor you could ever see,he makes more time for his fans than all the rest put together, and that's a fact.
Big deficit somewhere in the I.Q. test and shallow in certain character traits I'm guessing. To be more Gullible than a piece of gravel isn't a desirable trait in adulthood.

Russell seems to be in a good place now in his life. When he was younger, he established a reputation of being a hot head, now he looks mellow. Maybe he was carbs deficient back then!
I was in San Francisco and saw a cool looking building in the North Beach area and asked if I could take photos of the inside. just learning how to use and adjust my new DSLR I bought. The lady looked at me a little weird but said, Sure go ahead. It turned out to be the Scientology building. I didn't know one existed in San Francisco. but post 9/11 will do that. No one asked me to Join or showed any signs of doing so.
I can relate to this. Growing up in northern NSW I had a fascination with the local Catholic Church and the stations of the cross. I was Presbyterian and was always getting told off going there and asking questions.
@@tellmestraight What about the people who fled with Scientologists trying to chase them off the road, and bring them back. Police involvement to help many escape? Are they all lying? It's a horrendous organisation.
Russell Crowe plays a tough guy in the movie sometimes, but I've heard stories about him that he doesn't want to take any kind of crap, or disrespect. This makes him person who commands respect. Awm

It was pretty well known that when he was with Nicole Kidman, he wasn't as avid a Scientologist as he is now. That was before the couch jumping, the attack on post-partum depression and Brooke Shields, before that black turtleneck video, etc
Leah Remini recounted a incident at Tom and Katies wedding where she found Suri locked in a bathroom and was crying... Tom left her in there before the wedding and noone was paying attention to her.. she was crawling around on the floor by the pisser... Tom Cruise is human feces.
mickeydusk I’m Australian. There are a variety of subtle differences across Aus, none of which matter to us as far as comprehension. When abroad, our accent often confuses people, so we tend to temper it a bit. Russell doesn’t.
Correct. Both are class acts. I notice how many jealous petty people are piping in and know nothing. The interviewer knows nothing but gossip. Crowe has personal knowledge so is to be believed.
I didn't like Russell in the 90's and early 2000. Good actor, pretentious prick (seemingly) in person. Like the last 5 to 10 years he seems to have really mellowed out and is becoming one of my favorite actors in person. Maybe I misjudged him early (or now, lol) but totally would hang out with him now....which I know he is just dying to do and will be thrilled to hear.
@Saff Michael: I totally hear you. It's a typically Australian thing with aussie blokes. They just naturally come across as arrogant, enitled and generally as conceited douchebags. Must be something in the water. LOL!
My parents did exactly the same .. and I’ve done the same with my children.. it’s up to the individual to find what faith.. if any .. they want to follow.. I thank my parents for that too! 😊
You know what we all should take away from what Russell said? Respect. Respect others decisions. If it really is a cult that serves only to take money from it's following, respect those "stupid" enough to get in. If it is an actual life changing belief that changes other's lives for the better, respect that too.
Years ago, I took a salaried job and begin work. Almost immediately the owners started mandating I attend meetings at work of Scientology. I declined respectfully at first. Then they pushed harder. I continued to decline. They had private meeting with me insisting I attend. I again declined. I was fired because of it. I learned because it was a small firm, I had no legal recourse. Other new hires attended the meetings. We need far better laws so this cannot happen again. Cruise is a decent actor but that religion if you call it that is wrong to enforce its will on people declining it. I had to restrain myself and not get angry about it at times during work.
I don’t care about Tom Cruise’s religion. We have a deal: he doesn’t bug me, I don’t bug him. And his dedication to his cinematic craft is astonishing.
What a sweet thing for a mother to have the faith in her son not to choose a religion for him and let him to find God on his own. I don't know if I've ever heard anything so sweet or so wise about a single mother before. He was as blessed as she was.
I find the mentality of his mother to be or to have been ahead of her time. Like not baptising him so he could decide over his faith later on. Interesting
I do not bash actors for Scientology per se though I criticized the organization a lot. To me they sell the product as if they were selling cars or cosmetics.
All because he said to Trey Parker, after Trey commented on a Russel's music album (that he was INVITED to comment on): "Well, I'll send you special copy where i'll make sure I've edited that out"(paraphrazing). Which they(Matt and Trey) thought was such a dick move that they made him live with this cartoon of himself for the rest of his life :P
Srinivas, what's your point? You think he will show his true self to his peers? I'm sure he is quite charismatic and charming... but so are many other charlatans
@@j.k.asbill6131 What I am saying is, he could have been wrong headed. But not necessarily malicious. Just consider this. He could have been a true believer once. Do you think it's so easy for the poster child of Scientology to disavove and get away from it all unscathed. Look at him with kind eyes for once. He came of age during the self-helf revolution of the 80s. He is sort of like the character he played in 'Magnolia'. He is obviously not going to show weakness and admit to being blackmailed by the cult. I feel that he is between a rock and a hard place. Just like the way a lot assume Tom Cruise to be a bad person. I would you like you to go in with the assumption that Tom is fundamentally a good person and take it from there. You will see the things a lot differently I assure you.
I agree - seems like a nice guy... who knows... anyway, as a Christian - take as you find... stop judging others so quickly. On a scale of celebrity freaks or scary folk, Tom C seems quite low down to me!
I bet Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes would have a few negative words about him if they weren't scared of what he and the "Church" of Scientology would try to do to them and their children.
When my wife and i moved to L.A. years ago Scientology tried to recruit us. It was suppose to be a free acting class at the church. We didn’t know exactly what scientology was at the time. It wasn’t much of an acting class. More of a promotional class for the church. They put me in a room and gave me the personality test. We got the readout and they tried to tell me what was wrong with me. The test was ridiculous. I held the two hand grips connected to the machine with wires. They asked me questions and i Immediately felt i was being manipulated in to something not good. The staff seem very drone like. All had a fake facade of friendliness and happiness. They took me into a room to analyze my read out and my personality issues. By that time I was ready to chew the guy behind the desk to pieces and i did. I let him show his cards first. He would tell me my deficiencies and I disagreed with about 80% of it. He argued with me that it was what his machine told him and it was correct. You couldn’t argue with this machine. I told him what a bunch of bullshit this was. And put it all back on him turning the tables on this manipulative bullshit. I asked him how he could ever analyze who I am and what I am, just by me holding a couple handgrips hooked to some fake machine. I ask him his medical background in psychology, he had none. I asked him who analyzed the data from the machine. He was very vague about it and had no real answers. They try to make you feel like you are less then, deficient. A leak or vulnerable personality easily could submit to this. They make you feel like you need help and they are the only way you can find happiness in your life. They try to put you in a vulnerable position. Break you down so you will submit. Its a classic cult recruiting method. I told the drone behind the desk that I was leaving. He was trying every trick in the book to get me to stay. My wife was going through the same process. I went to the room they had her in and said we’re leaving. I felt it was a race to the exit door between us and their staff. We both were followed all the way out to the street where we had parked. The drones were trying to talk us into staying all the way even blocking our path. They even offered us launch to stay. My fight or flight instincts kicked in and I was ready to turn on them if they got close to my car or put a hand on either of us. They stopped at the property line of the church. OMG what an insight this experience gave me into this church and I say that loosely. The difference between a church and a cult is when you try to leave. This is not a church. It has nothing to do with spirituality or God. They never said anything about god. They want you to worship the church not god. Stay away from Scientology at all costs because you will whined up paying the price.
Oh man. If you're not interested, NEVER take ANY class of any kind if it's from a church. They WILL give you the sales pitch and try to convert you. I was 12 years old when the Jehovah's witnesses went to work on me. "Bible study" they called it. I was too nice to say No. My parents were to nice to say No. JWs have no business trying to convert a 12 y.o kid whatsoever! Anyhoo. That's in the past. I can deal with JWs or any other religions I don't agree with. I simply tell them my beliefs are my business and no one else's. They don't take no for an answer at first so I just repeat myself until they get the point. Problem solved
Romeo Alpha when I was a kid we had a church in our area called Tri-City Baptist Church. Young men in their church would drive around neighborhoods pull up next to a kid riding his bike and start talking to him or her about being saved. They literally would try to save you. Have you except Jesus Christ as your lord and savior right there on the street. Didn’t really matter what religion you were. They would never do anything like that with a parent around. They caught me many times always told them to go stuff it up their ass because I knew what they were doing wasn’t correct. You’ll be riding your bike down the street and a car load of young men pull over and literally surround you. They would tell you you were going to hell if you didn’t get saved right here and now. It got to a point that when we saw them we would cut through yards or fields to get away from them. That church later got in trouble for hosting a karate exhibition locking the doors so none of the kids could leave. The kids couldn’t get out they had this Baptist bullshit rammed down their throats. My brother and his friends went to it and he was so angry. As a matter of fact my friends dad Mr. Henderson an Army vet got in his car and pulled the Tri City Church boys car over and let them have it. He was pissed and ready to fight. Told them if found them it the neighborhood again his was going to call the police or take care of it himself. Mr. Henderson became our hero. In later years that church had its Pastor removed for inappropriate relationships with young girls. He went to jail. It was then sued into a oblivion and had to close it’s doors. Thank God. Even at the age of 8 you knew something was very wrong here. That ruined me on the Baptist religion for life. If someone did that to my kid no way i would call the police. I would want any wittinesses.
@@haydenlogston2164 i was raised Catholic. I still have my faith but it's pretty much on a one to one basis. Me & God/Jesus and that's it. All men(& women) have evil in their hearts. They have good too but still, evil is there. That said, the Christian Orthodox church is talking to me. Maybe I'll look into it. I do feel better when I attend services.
Romeo Alpha my exwife was a staunch Catholic. I attended services with her and I really enjoyed it. I was raised as a firm believer in spirituality and reincarnation. The only church I have been loosely associated with is Unity. Yes a church and services helps a person become more spiritual and that’s a good thing. I myself never needed really it. I spent a lot of time in the woods when I was a kid and that is were i felt my first realization of God. I’m not a granola eating organic type person. I eat meat, shoot guns, smoke and chew tobacco. I pray in my home and in the woods. I live in the mountains of CA at close to 6,000 feet. It’s a really small neighborhood And the Los Padres forest is literally 2 short blocks from my house. I mean miles and miles of forest. A trail head is a 15 min walk away and i can be in heavy forest with tall pines and not a soul in sight. So my church is a 15 min walk away. Organized religion it’s not for me there’s too much conformity. Some people want the structure and feeling of community. Thats exactly what helps people get in touch with their spirituality. As long as we are trying to be better and more spiritual people it makes no difference how you get there. I have nothing against organized religion but I’ve always lived my life by creed. That creed is “organized religion is for those who fear hell, spirituality is for those who have been there”. I have been there. I don’t dislike organized religion its just not for me and never has been.

Mr. Crowe is a honorable man and loyal to his friends.
I was not much of a fan of Russel Crowe, but after listening to that interview, I like how he tells it like it is, no bullshit lol
While I think Scientology is for cranks, I like that Russell is objective about it, not twisting the truth. Cool
Saying it's for cranks is a bit unfair.
Objective? I didn't hear him talk about their extensive criminal record or the fact that L. Ron Buzzard created Scamology to make a quick buck.
I think Scientology seeks out people who are lost and looking for something to believe in.

Russell crow has a lot of swagger
I congratulate Russell for being the better man. Cruise is clearly delusional and a key leader of a growing worldwide cult (scientology). Russell is a rational thinker when it comes to religion and he did well to keep this interview on the intellectual level.

Geotubest As an anti-theist, I agree with you. All religions are delusional cults. My original comment could have added this concept, but I chose to focus on just one of the many different religious cults (scientology). Christianity and Islam remain the worse of the bunch, particularly with their brainwashing of weak minded adults and children.
+hugh jorgan stand back, the all knowing anit-theist hugh jorgan has spoken. you are an idiot, brainwashing has nothing to do with a strong or "weak" mind. why dont you pretend you have a life and actually get out of your mom and dad's basement

Scientology is about picking the weak.
It was dreamt up by a science fiction writer. Go figure.
Religious leaders are about it.

Russell Crowe is one of my most liked actors of all time. Super authentic guy.

Sharon Jensen that’s just the way the Aussies are. Mostly level headed, no bullshit. Kiwis are just the same, but a little more polite. 😆👍
@@magicalmystery1964 Could be because Russell seems more rough around the edges and Nicole is classy and ladylike. But then, when she did marry again, Keith Urban seemed a bit rough around the edges too (he's actually very nice!).
You just repeated what Russell said?
"Scientology is a body of religious beliefs and practices invented in May 1952 by American author L. Ron Hubbard (1911-86). Hubbard initially developed a program of ideas called Dianetics, which was distributed through the Dianetics Foundation. The foundation soon entered bankruptcy, and Hubbard lost the rights to his seminal publication Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health in 1952. He then recharacterized the subject as a religion and renamed it Scientology, retaining the terminology, doctrines, the E-meter, and the practice of auditing. Within a year, he regained the rights to Dianetics and retained both subjects under the umbrella of the Church of Scientology." - according to Wikipedia
So THAT is how it became a "religion".
Everyone in their right mind KNOWS how dangerous Scientology is! STAY CLEAR OF IT! It will suck the living blood right out of you!

Lol fkn love Russell Crowe. He's such a chill dude.
Great insight
Thanks
