  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2015 VW Tiguan is a German Crossover that can go off-road...or can it. In this TFLcar review Nathan finds out just how off-road worthy the 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan is when the snow starts to melt in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

    I grabbed a previously leased one and thus avoided a big chunk of its depreciation. Great daily driver, sexy aesthetics, peppy engine and has way more luxurious features than my home office. A winner in my book.

    I’ve owned a tig 4 motion for 3 years 30K. My first VW. Impossible to get it stuck in the snow and it held on the to the winter track at Lime Rock this winter without snow tires. It’s not for bells and whistles shoppers. It’s about the drive train and the build quality. Great road trip car especially into a city as the thing will park anywhere. On a highway trip we average 28 mpg with spinning the turbo.

      David Taylor You hit the nail on the head! We have a 2014 with 50k since new and it's been the most reliable vehicle we've ever owned, and that includes and Audi Fox, Mazda 626 & 323, and a Honda Accord. One warranty item, the horn had to be replaced but that's it! We can get 35 mpg if we're careful, as we did last summer with the A/C blasting. The build quality is something else. Closing the door feels like sealing a bank vault and 50,000 miles later, no rattles or squeaks!

      +David Taylor I have a 2012 Tiguan S 4motion with 22K that is mostly highway miles. I get close to 30mpg. I think it drives great. My third VW, love how VW's handle. Was driving fast in heavy rain in DC, 495, great handling. I am hoping to have time to take a road trip this spring, to go out west to NM / AZ / NV / UT / CA. Beautiful part of the country.

    My wife and I bought our 2nd Tiguan earlier this year. She works in a high traffic, tight parking, downtown area. We have 2 siberian huskies so a csuv is an absolute minimum for us. The new Tiguans are a little pricey. We decided to pick up a low mileage 2012 sel, 2wd, and love it even more then our first. We bought our first one, a 2010 base s 2wd, brand new and keep it for 3 years. At the time, there wasn't an affordable csuv that we enjoyed driving nearly as much as the Tiguan, for the money. The newest CX5 from Mazda is a close 2nd for us as far as looks and being decent to drive. We just enjoy the extra grunt from the turbocharged 2.0 from VW to much. My wife is a little heavy footed so mixed city/highway we see around 24.5-25mpg. Flat out highway I can easily maintain 30-31mpg depending on the terrain and my right foot.

    I got a certified pre owned 2011 SE with 4 motion. The car had 27,000 miles on it and the previous owner clearly treated it well because it even smelled new. We spent $21,000. Had we bought the 2014 model the price would have been around $33,000.
    This car, as many have noted, lacks any overt character in terms of design, and it would behove VW to address this weakness (i.e. if they care about increasing sales) - perhaps the team in Germany are just stubborn. I am not a knowledgeable car person having only owned a 1985 Jeep Wrangler, which I sold may years ago - I have discovered over the past year that the driving experience is rich, utterly enjoyable, comfortable and reassuring. Now, with my second child and two car seats in there it's tight, but because I have no other experience with SUVs or compact SUVs , the space issue is a non issue - we pack the car just fine and we're all comfy. We've been on 5 hour drives and this little car has been just excellent in every regard and in every type of weather we've encountered in the North East.

    I have the Tiguan, 2012, with basically the same setup. Do NOT get the bigger wheels, unless you like a harsher ride. You can go listen to the complaints from Kelley Blue Book or Consumer Reports about the harsh ride, and that's because they tested the bigger wheels. I specifically picked a package with 4motion and standard smaller wheels, and the ride is fantastic. Plus, tire pressure, you want a bit more feel, lower the pressure a few psi below the max. :-)
    Go buy it, it drives like all VW's, superb handling, and I love the Tiguan. I love VW's though, this is my third.

      +Ranger4564 Also, fuel mileage, if you drive it modestly, and use manual shift or cruise control, you can do closer to 30 mpg highway. If you drive a lot of local roads only, expect low mpg.

    So many people have this same impression. They hate the Tig from afar. Yes I admit its pricey but I highly encourage a test drive or at least try one for a few days (preferably the 4-motion). I promise it makes up for it in driving experience. Very spunky, 4WD works very well, and for a small suv its pretty light on its feet. Negotiate your dealer for a couple thousand less and play hard ball and boom you have a great practical crossover for a few buds going on a mountain camping trip

    I have 2011 Tiguan SEL here in Colorado. Came with 235/50 R18 wheels and tires. Great set up for summer, and I put Continental DWS tires. Went to Moab, Taos in summer for some bicycling, they are ok. However, for winter, I bought 16 inch wheel and put 215/65 R16 98T Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 winter tires. Holy moly. That thing is like a goat! With that torquy engine, short wheel base, narrow snow tires, great AWD, you just fly over Colorado passes in blizzards, icy roads, deep snow, anything! Car now has 64K, but there is now way I am selling it! My wife drives it on daily basis, I have 2013 X5 35d, also snow tires, but this little Tig goes in snow better then X5, compliment of narrow tires, short wheel base and good AWD system.

    You seemed to be a little self annoyed perhaps because of the cold, in this interview. That aside, I expected a little more demonstration of the 4 motion system. The reason why I'm mentioning all of this is because I feel most people recognize VW is going to build some or most of their models in the upper price range spectrum, because of the technology and German build quality(diesel emissions aside). The other reason why I'm saying all this is because I traded a 2 year old BMW X-6, for one of these that I also bought new. Not because I left my senses, but because I came to them. This is one of the most agile, sporty, fun to drive vehicles I have ever purchased. In comparison, the X-6 just seemed more trucky, not as agile and less fun as a daily driver. I've always felt and still do, that VW gives you more bang for your buck in most instances and they do mark down quite a bit when new models are ready to be introduced, making them even a greater purchasing deal. Finally, since we're on the subject, I'm a little disappointed with BMW. I've also owned their new sedans, (I buy and later sell often different vehicles, it's an expensive hobby but I love vehicles). BMW as of late with exception of the 2 series has bloated and over weighted, and enlarged their cars, making them less fun and agile, in comparison to what they once were. The VW, Audi and Porsche have not forgotten their European tradition of building fun cars to drive. While taste is subjective, and some people would disagree, I've noticed the changes in the BMW AG company that I'm not satisfied with as previously stated. That is why I'll probably stay with other German brands until things change with BMW. As a final footnote, this Tiquan does seem to share some of the driving characteristics of the older version's of "the ultimate driving machine," and because of this reason, seems to offer great value.

      +korling99 When I was shopping, I was down to the Tiguan and Forester. Main reason I went with VW, other than I have a history with VW's, the dealer for the Forester was being a jerk, deceptive, the VW dealer was being a bigger jerk, but honest. In the end, I didn't buy from either local jerky dealers, I had to go get it 500 miles away because of the package and color combo I wanted. I got the Tiguan, but there are many days I wonder what it would be like to have gotten the 2013 Forester. Oh, and 2% financing on the Forester, 0% on the Tiguan.

    My main disagreement with you on this and other videos that I have watched, where you were the one doing the review is summed up in something you said in this video. You were bothered by the fact that this base model doesn't have larger and more stylish wheels. Everything that I have read about this current trend of using larger, and sometimes ridiculously larger wheels, is just about looks. These larger wheels, take away from mileage, they decrease 0 to 60 times, they cause pickup trucks (that have them) to lower the number of pounds that a truck can both carry and tow. The whole thing is just stupid. I want an automobile that has the tire and wheel size that will optimize my truck or SUV's performance in the important areas. There is an older Chevrolet Monte Carlo that I see here in my town, the rims look like they are about 25 or 27 inches. Now, that look may appeal to a certain amount or percentage of the population...and I have no problem with those individuals being able to put whatever size tires and wheels that they want on their cars and trucks. But I do have a problem with automobile manufacturers who are intent on making that the only size or sizes available. I don't want twenty-two inch (Plus) rims on my pickup truck or SUV. I was watching a Mr. Truck video yesterday, and it was about the 2016 Ford Expedition. There were two reviewers (including Mr. Truck) and one engineer, that were out on the test ride. The other reviewer asked what size the rims were on the vehicle that they were driving and the engineer told them that they were 22". When asked if smaller rims were available, the engineer quickly replied that that there were no smaller rim sizes offered, and that the decision to do that was made by the marketing department. To me, that is just another example of form over function. So, I am very glad that this small SUV has a more reasonable rim and tire size. And if this automobile does have a superior engine and transmission, well, then I suppose that it is very likely worth something close to the asking price. Hardly anybody EVER pays MSRP anyway. Just my opinion. And that is almost the only thing that I disagree with you about. For the most part, I very much enjoy the job that you fellas do. Thank you.

      The trend to larger wheels has hit true off road vehicles also.. the maximum one wants on such vehicles is 17” but 16” is better. I’m afraid reviewers tend to miss the point on many things. By example, complaining about the third row in a 7 seater being too small for an adult. They are not meant for adults, just for the occasional time extra kids are on board. I have even seen one review where the main complaint was a USB port was not in a convenient location.

    It is German, solid, and its classic look will not age. Wheel larger, for show, not efficiencies. Glad the 4 Motion is efficient and the engine a bomb (German made). It is no more basic or plain than a basic utilitarian jeep is. No fancy trendy shapes. Functional. And the 2019 Price is low compared to competition. Most made in Asian country are trendy, fancy but beside Mitsubishi Montero Short or Long Wheel base, only the German with VW can be compared. Sadly Mitsubishi Montero & Pajero are no longer sold in the US. VW Tiguan is. Thanks for the video. Would have like to see more 4 wheel drive application. Beside pot holes. Thanks anyway. I agree with the value. It simply isn't there for the Tiguan, unfortunately. My mother has a 2014 Tiguan with the R Line Package and it's just amazing, but it cost almost $42,000! She drives a ton and already has 50,000 miles on it and lifetime average has been 28mpg. Once on a roadtrip, it got 35.5mpg. The thing is with the 2.0 TSI, if you're in the boost, fuel mileage goes down the drain, but on calm,steady and constant roads and speeds, the turbo acts like it isn't there and it will sip fuel. I'm really curious to see how long this engine will last. So far no issues!

    Hey guys your my fave team and I own the 2016 vw tiguan 2.0 tsi and I have front wheel drive and top of the line all season tires my best friend and I went through a Jeep 4x4 rated trail and I made it all the way threw how ever my tiguan is retuned from vw for towing yes the mpg is ok but your not going to find anything better performance and luxury for that low or a price and I hit 60 way to fast lol

  • @krane15
    @krane15 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually, I don't agree with you. VW have always fit in that position just ahead of its competition. They're positioned in the narrow gap of just under luxury. Other manufactures may meet of exceed some of its cargo carrying capacity, and certainly its fuel economy, but as you say, its a "driver's car."
    That means its put together with the next level resilience, and tossing it into the corners with confidence is the on thing you don't generally get from any of its competition. While the others can handle straight and level flight well enough, VW goes a step further and is way more fun to drive. Just get one full-equipped, it you're going to buy one.
    BTW, @2:14 is that a crack in the sun visor holder on the right? 😕

      Ara J The perspective of the camera is tricky. When you're driving it, the guage looks like it hasn't warmed up, but when you center yourself on it, it's exactly in the middle at 190. These engines are precision built and have a very precise thermostat and cooling system, unlike something you'd get from Japan or the US

    just wait until that "super powerplant" will consume up to a gallon of oil...and that DSG will give nothing but headache

    • @brandonfriesen5389
      @brandonfriesen5389 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TataruRoman A) Break in period is everything, my mom has 50k and broke hers in easily for 1,000 miles and consumes no oil. My buddy went full out when he bought his new GTI with the same engine and it consumes 1 liter of oil every fillup. It's an iron block with iron castings, it can't take immediate thrashing, everything needs to set in. B) It's a conventional automatic, not a DSG. And DSG's are long lasting if you do the fluid changes every 60k
