    Absolutely stunning! The film "Speed" is often mentioned during the presentation of the highway. But I also recommends "Lethal Weapon 3", with a great car chase from the airport to the I405/I105 interchange (in construction)!

      Thanks, yes indeed, good call there with Lethal Weapon 3, Also the Movie "Falling Down" has a scene at one of these interchanges.

    Loved the introduction, and the imagery of the interchanges you inserted into this. People to this day (including me) continue to fret about the Santa Monica Freeway's notorious congestion, but believe it or not, 20 years after the I-105 was built, traffic levels along the 10 still haven't reached its early-90's levels. One of the best freeways in the LA basin to cruise along.

      Thanks, glad you liked the production, I thought the road was a perfect example of high-end modern highway engineering, 105 has all the bell and whistles so to speak.

    Always love the feeling of seeing the 405-105 stack interchange when I'm coming from North California to my real hometown, San Diego. It reminds me that I'm back in the city.

    Spent a very hot week in LA on holiday in 1998 - remember this road well from LAX as well as works underway to rebuild overpasses on the I-5 Santa Ana Freeway to allow for 5 lanes of traffic each way. Back then most tourist maps listed the Century Freeway as the 'Imperial Freeway'

    I had a nice encounter with a CHP motor officer on the 105,who pulled me over and discussed my driving behavior. Was I speeding? No. Was I swerving? No. Was I being a traffic nuisance? No. I was driving on the freeway (at about 45 MPH) before it opened. Since I've been a 105 fan since the early '60's, I just HAD to be one of the first on the freeway. I asked the CHP motor officer how he saw me on the freeway and he said he was doing the same thing I was - checking it out before it opened. It opened about a year later and I knew I wouldn't be there for the opening .. I was in Salt Lake City.

    Hi Jim, I just belatedly saw your video of I-105, and wanted to add a point. The opening scene of the musical movie "La La Land" takes place high on the HOV connector from EB 105 to NB 110 (on the fifth level of the stack). It's a fun scene - the connector is completely congested with no one moving. After about 30 seconds of honking and frustration, a driver gets out of her car and starts to sing and dance. Soon everyone is singing and dancing and playing bongo drums on the freeway. It sounds silly, but it's so over the top that it works. And you get some great views of LA in the background from the crest of the connector. The party breaks up when traffic begins to move. (La La Land eventually won several academy awards, including best director and best director.)

    If you want to see some early 80's appearances of and references to *I-105* , check out *Suburbia* (1983) . The abandoned houses / neighbourhood at the eastern-terminus of I-105 in Norwalk were home to a group of *Punk* kids in the film ; the home's name was *"T.R."* *House* . *I-605* is in the background of one scene where the car the kids are in exits at the now-former *Alondra* off-ramp .

    Nice job Jim! I grew up in Compton and Lynwood in the 1960's and 1970's. Of course I remember when they prepped the area for the freeway over Long Beach Boulevard in that whole Lynwood area, then as we know, the dirt just stood vacant for quite a few years. I am a truck driver in the Southland now. So I have to agree with your positive assessment of all of those so-called stack interchanges. And you are correct sir, the most beautiful one is at the Harbor Freeway!!

      If there was just some way they could have eliminated that tiny "loop" ramp. (north to west) Why could not that been a flyover? It is totally out of place. It cannot possibly handle a very high traffic volume.

      It is true that freeways all over the US have made it really easy for urban sprawl to occur. Without them, People would have to actually live near there workplace and shop locally. When I was in the Bay area back in 1970 briefly, they actually had a rather good public transportation system using mainly buses with free transfers, extremely well timed. (San Francisco/ Oakland/ Alameda) as well as other parts of the area.

    The 105 is definitely a freeway I want to check out in the future. Those flyover ramps would probably take a whole day just to experience! I liked the good dose of information and the inclusion of satellite view for the various intersections.
    Speed was one of my favorite movies, and I'd probably take the time to retrace the route that was featured in the film, if it was fully authentic to source. Great video in all!

      If you added up ALL the connectors from the Century Fwy to the Harbor Fwy (including all carpool/toll connectors) you would have over 25 miles of roadway. Those extra miles would take you 1) almost all the way to the Pacific Ocean, 2) Past the Harbor/San Diego interchange, 3) very close to the Harbor/Hollywood Interchange and to the current terminus. That's a whole lotta ancillary roads.

  • @RayMullins
    @RayMullins 11 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Nice little bit of trivia: when the Green Line was opened, LACMTA set the maximum speed on the median portion at 55 m.p.h. It was thought that cars would try to race the trains if they went at 65 m.p.h. Luckily this bit of idiocy didn't last too long and now the cars can travel at 65 m.p.h. There is still some concern about faster than that, but obviously LACMTA rail operations has not driven on the 105, because even if the trains were going 75 m.p.h., they'd be slower than about 1/3 of the traffic. :)

    When I lived there in 1970 there was actually an interchange built at the 405 San Diego freeway just north of the airport. It was sort of a interchange to nowhere.

    • @hgr4255
      @hgr4255 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That interchange you speak of would have been part of the La Cienega Freeway routing. It never came to fruition other than a high speed parkway. The interchange to nowhere is now lined with apartments and is currently (2017) being modified with the new Culver City light rail overpass. Progress.

      @Craig F. Thompson Gotta love it. In early 70's after discharging from the Navy, I went to CIvil Engineering 20 (Roads and Highways) school. Being an ardent fan of freeways then, I wanted to design me some big roads. I already had thousands of drawings of freeway plans for LA basin since I was a kid (yep, a freeway nerd to the max). I eventually dropped out of engineering in favor of starting a security alarm company and became a success at that. Nowadays, I see freeways are really problematic and if given the opportunity, I would have then gone to mass transit engineering.

      Mr. Dan ... your ire is well founded but the biggest impediment to completion to the I-5 was capacity. An extension to that freeway at/near Bloomfield/Carmenita would have been a traffic disaster without comparison (that's hard to say in Los Angeles). Without a complete major rebuild of that portion of the Santa Ana Fwy, traffic would have not moved off the freeway heading east. I guess the bright side is the relief of traffic from the N Santa Ana Fwy, taking the Century transition well into other regions of Los Angeles via the Century, the Harbor alternate, the San Diego Fwy. One side no problem, the other a disaster.

    I just love all of your videos. Some (like this) take me back to places I've been while others make me want to visit other places. I have a question on this one, though... You say the name "Century Fwy." is because it took nearly a century to build. I had thought (and been told by others) that it was due to the similar track of Century Blvd. Additionally, it was sometimes referred to as the "Imperial Fwy." due to its proximity to the western half of Imperial Hwy.

    Another 105 Factoid - On the corner of La Cienega and Imperial Highway was an L- shaped 6-story building, the long end of the L paralleling La Cienega and the short leg extending east about 400'. You'll see that building as you scoot I-405S to I-105W. Problem with that building was it was in the way of the transition, so they chopped the short L off the building and now it's just a rectangle. I always thought they should've done it ala-Japan style, put a tunnel through the 3 and 4th story to allow the transition. That would be so cool and a real 'KODAK moment' for the 105.

    I-105 was not completed to it's parent freeway,I don't it's ever going to be because of local opposition. In all about 61% of the 1950's freeway plan for the LA area was completed from what I've read. Nice Video!

      The same can be said for the 710 to an extent. Although it does connect to it's parent (10), The plan was for it to continue to Pasadena (hence the control city for northbound signage), but it too faced similar opposition and thus, ends as a stub just north of I-10. While L.A. was able to get a number of it's freeway plan done, the same cannot be said for San Francisco, where almost NONE of it's planned freeways were built or ever finished and remains the largest city with the fewest miles of freeway.

The entire stretch had to be re-plumbed to allow better drainage. I went through there one year and the water came up over the wheel wells ... fun stuff unless your on a motorcycle. It's working fine now, the drainage is excellent.

I did a security alarm job at Karen Carpenters house in Downey, little realizing that her folks moved there because the 105 bought up their property for the highway.

    Aha, it worked. OK here goes (for the third time).Who remembers the 405 bypass bridge built just for the 405/105 interchange tunnels? I do, it was on my morning commute from Redondo to Culver City. Caltrans actually built a complete bypass bridge about 3/4 of a mile long and about 300' east of the current interchange. The bypass was built so they could cut and cover the I 105 WB TO 405 SB AND I 105 EB TO 405 NB tunnels. These work of engineering art had their own ventilation and drainage systems. After the cut and cover work the new 405 deck was placed over it and the bypass bridge was torn down. Anyone else remember this? I'm sure the cost of just that bypass bridge alone comprised at least 30% of the interchange cost.

      It's not really a song, it's just a loop from a music software program that I stuck in there.

    Well FreewayJim ... I hope you're there for the build of the Slauson Freeway. LOL, which will NEVER happen. I remember that stub of the 90E to 405S hanging there for almost 1 year before they built the ramp to join the overpass bridge. It appears you'll have to switch gears in L.A. now and show lite rail videos as the demise of the freeway are a' comin.

      High Occupancy Vehicle, you must have at least two people in the car to use that particular lane, Google it to learn more.

    I-105 CA brings culture when I check the Wikipedia page of it. There are some fun facts based on the culture of that freeway.
    Edit: The most popular culture based on I-105 is a 1994 Keanu Reeves movie "Speed" where we see the Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange caught in the scene as the bus jumps from a ramp between I-110 southbound to I-105 westbound.

    If you are going to make a video. Make the video at a real speed.
    Making a extra fast video makes no sense & is a waste of time

      LMAO, yeah and this channel has over 43K Subs and almost 25 Million views but it's a waste of time. Real-time videos are boring as sin, people are more likely to watch this 5+ minute video synced to music than the 20+ minutes in real-time that the drive took, and forget the even longer rides. It's not all about you and what you like Justin, I see that you just don't "get" this channel and that's OK but don't piss on it because you don't.

      Alright listen here you little buttsniff, if you've ever recorded any footage from inside your vehicle, and played it back you'll notice that it appears much slower. You might have been driving 65 mph down the highway. But on camera it looks like you only moving 25mph. Also if you've ever watched to the end of Jim's videos, the total real time spent driving amalgamates to around an hour or more. Most people dont have time to sit through that long if a video, or dont want to. The entire point is to condense a long scenic route into something thrilling to enjoy in a short time frame. You can still appreciate the view. Now go back to watching grass grow.

      You know what is a waste of time? Your logic. Do you know How much time goes into editing these videos and not to mention, how long these videos are?

    • @themysticnugget1540
      @themysticnugget1540 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheWholeGrainBread_Real i see youre still missing the point. video editing is part of the fun and the outcome is way better and more appealing to people. if you dont like it record your own videos but dont bother posting it on youtube, no one else like watching grass grow.. your opinion is the 0.001% demographic no one cares about any way because your reasoning is asinine.
