A wonderful sermon, straight to my slothy heart. It's so important to recall that the hopeless of Acedia works in two directions: overdoing and underdoing. Giving up, or working to fix everything. In literature, there was a hint of acedia in Frodo's comment to Gandalf that he wished the unfolding War of the Ring had not happened in his time. The wizard's comment (whose mission to Middle Earth was pity and suffering love, as the foe of the pitiless and dominating Sauron) is for all of us. Tolkien writes: "Frodo: 'I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.'
Gandalf: 'So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil'.”

+Binks Webelf ......I use this EXACT Tolkien line in my head over and over in response to the lamentable state of the world which we battle daily. I imagine how St. Augustine felt as the barbarians were beating down the walls to HIS city. Moral of the story? Hang tough. The battle has already been won.

Acedia describes a state of listlessness or torpor, of not caring or not being concerned with one's position or condition in the world. It can lead to a state of being unable to perform one's duties in life. Its spiritual overtones make it related to but arguably distinct from depression.[1] Acedia was originally noted as a problem among monks and other ascetics who maintained a solitary life.
St Martha is the spiritual conqueror against acedia.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria is the Saint that conquered Acedia as was related to a Catholic Exorcist by a conquered Demon during the Rite of Exorcism. Start saying her Novena and you will be delivered.

What an eye opener for me! Thank you for this grace of thid video. For the past 2 years I have been "off center". The "not caring" about one's position in life to the point of falling short of doing my duties, and not caring, etc. I thought I was being surrounded by sloth. It's ACEDIA. Thank you, Father......Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee.

4:20 Christian life: Exodus - We leave the Egyptian slavery of sin by crossing the Red Sea by baptism and begin a spiritual journey our whole life wandering thru a desert, which ends up in the promised land of Heaven. Sometimes qe get tired wandering around in the desert, we get lost and we don't know where to go and aren't sure if we're gonna get to the promised land of Heaven. --- Acedia

I'm the first person to do the laundry and I hate to let things sit. I have a narcissist neighbor who has been disruptive for months and I am the problem. I was told to talk with her.
