- Attitude meets Yasmin Finney and Will Gao who play two of the main characters in Netflix's 'Heartstopper'.
In the show, they portray the high schoolers, Elle and Tao, from Alice Oseman's 'Heartstopper' series of comics. Speaking to Attitude for their first editorial cover shoot the pair discuss interacting with the series' fans and working with Heartstopper creator, Alice Oseman.

The casting for heartstopper is truly incredible. Seeing so much diversity and representation makes me so happy, we've come such a long way in media portrayal. I hope it helps people find comfort in their identity cause it's definitely helped me with that and it really means a lot :'D

when i first read heartstopper it was truly a shock to me because it was the first time i saw such positive queer and especially trans representation. i am a trans teen and even though i am not like elle as i'm not a trans girl, seeing her character had such a positive impact on me. and there are no words to describe the feeling of pure joy and excitement when i learned that elle was going to be played by yaz, a trans girl !! getting positive representation is so important and i'm so glad and thankful that as a teen i get to have this kind of representation in medias, and that future generations will have access to it as well : )

@@Logan-dn6uv maybe from an outside perspective, but for the point of view of queer and non-cisgender people queer representation really needs to up its game which I love this so much.
I really agree (with the original comment) with you because when I read it I was like... oh it's gonna be another toxic relationship, why can't we get proper rep? but I was proven wrong with all the amazing characters and now I'm in love with the books and comics.
Also the fact that nick is bisexual rather than gay. I was watching shows like love, Victor as a bi person thinking it was bi rep, but it wasn't and I was pretty upset. so I'm glad Alice wrote nick the way she did. :)

Exactly, representation is everything in society, and it should have always been but we've come a long way and made lots of progress over the years so i can say we got to a point where diversity is portrayed more thoroughly and consistently and i couldn't be happier about it, even as a cisgender person i'm truly content with seeing this rightful change

I can’t- can we talk about how FUCKING PRETTY YAS IS?? LIKE- also I think this is the first live action trans character I’ve seen, which honestly made me happier than it probably should’ve, but there’s something about realizing “holy crap, the first trans character that isn’t a drawing, that you can actually see and is real!”

Elle has always been a comfort character of mine and I was beyond ecstatic to hear that Yasmin will play her! Her and Will have so much chemistary, and I can't wait to see that in the show!

Will Gao as Tao is amazing. Reading Heartstopper he was the friend I always wished I had, and watching him come to life on the screen brought me to tears tonight. Ma man Tao is hilarious and such a boss. So much love for the character and his amazing actor, so much admiration for Will ❤️
yaz's voice is nothing short of mesmerizing!! and i'm so glad to see her being comfortable in her role as elle, one of my fav characters
i've been giggling and bouncing my legs the entirety of these interviews simply because of how amazing and authentic these actors are. they look and seem so similar to the characters they're portraying and i can't help but gush over them !!!!!!
I LITERALLY cried with the last part, I am no longer in High School but me like so much others have stories of being an "outsider" like they said. It's hard to fit in and be yourself at the same time in a society like the one we're living in, but we must find a way. Keep on going y'all!!!

Seeing the diversity of the casting makes me so incredibly happy. In so many shows-if there is a trans character-they are usually played by a cis person, it’s so refreshing and inspiring to see an actual trans women playing a trans character! I’m very excited to watch the show!!

seeing these interviews as a queer young adult is so emotional, i’m just extremely happy and excited for the following generations to have such diverse representation and role models 🥹

Watching Will actively listen to and support Yasmin as she talks about her experiences is really heartwarming. These kids - the whole cast - are such sweet souls.

several months ago I was on the train reading volume 4. i always feel all the emotions reading heartstopper and I’m pretty transparent. my neighbor who was in their late thirties was reading a book too. when we were arriving they asked me what I was reading, they seemed truly interested. I started explaining to them what it was, emphasizing on the diversity and representation of the books. I told them that I truly have these books very close to my heart and they looked at me in the eyes and said “that is so important, so much that sometimes it is all that matter, to feel seen”. I still remember that person and I hope they’re okay and that they feel seen too ♥️

Like, a lot of the time, they cast full adults for kids, but these are people who are actually in the age range or rly close to it. And the fact they were so specific with who they were looking for. They didn't just choose a cis person for a trans character, they actually got a trans girl, which I'm living for. And like they were looking for the exact ethnicity, love it sm. I hate when people cast actors that are completely different from the characters. So yeah, that's my tangent, can't wait for this Friday

So heartwarming how the show represents different group of people. So so happy for this show! ❤
the section on bullying i felt in my core- for most of my highschool experience ive been placed into the out group, and in one of my highschools it contributed a lot to my general sadness and feeling like i was unwanted. but regardless of this i always found my 'group', as most of us outsiders do- its only natural! its just nice to have a show and story dedicated to just that; a group of outsiders. it means so much to me that the 'other' (for whatever reason that you may feel like an 'other') is the focus of heartstoppers cast dynamics!!
