- Today, I'm saying sayonara to Semarang and I'm heading to Surakarta, also known as Solo. To get there, I'm taking a shuttle bus that is conveniently located across the street from my hotel. After a comfortable 2-hour bus ride, I make it to Surakarta in Central Java, Indonesia. My hotel shows it's not very far on the map so I decide just to huff it. And well, google maps doesn't have the right address and it sent me to the wrong address. Luckily it wasn't too far off, maybe 5 minutes on foot. I then check-in, give you a quick tour of my place, and we head out to check out my surroundings. Close to my hotel, I noticed there was a huge wall that surrounded was turned out to be a neighborhood. When I head into the neighborhood, I come across a lemonade stand and the owner greets me and asks me where I'm going. I told him I'm just wandering around and he tells me that there is a palace in this neighborhood and that this neighborhood is home to the royal family here in Surakarta. There is still a royal family that lives in a palace, the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace, here in Solo.
Also, it turns out that this lemonade stand, named Lemonology, just opened and that I'm their first-ever customer. The owner and I chat for a bit and then I head to the palace. By the time I get there, I notice it's closed but that's ok, it was getting late and I was tired and so I'll head there another time. I go back a couple days later and make a video so stay tuned for that one.
After almost getting dumped on by the rain, I make it back to my hotel and enjoy some ramen and call it a day.

Hari ini, saya mengucapkan sayonara ke Semarang dan saya menuju ke Surakarta, juga dikenal sebagai Solo. Untuk sampai ke sana, saya naik shuttle bus yang lokasinya strategis di seberang jalan dari hotel saya. Setelah naik bus selama 2 jam dengan nyaman, saya sampai di Surakarta di Jawa Tengah, Indonesia. Hotel saya menunjukkan itu tidak terlalu jauh di peta jadi saya memutuskan untuk gusar saja. Dan yah, peta google tidak memiliki alamat yang benar dan itu mengirim saya ke alamat yang salah. Untungnya jaraknya tidak terlalu jauh, mungkin 5 menit jalan kaki. Saya kemudian check-in, memberi Anda tur singkat ke tempat saya, dan kami pergi untuk memeriksa lingkungan saya. Dekat dengan hotel saya, saya perhatikan ada tembok besar yang dikelilingi ternyata sebuah lingkungan. Ketika saya menuju ke lingkungan itu, saya menemukan kios limun dan pemiliknya menyapa saya dan bertanya ke mana saya akan pergi. Saya mengatakan kepadanya bahwa saya hanya berkeliaran dan dia memberi tahu saya bahwa ada sebuah istana di lingkungan ini dan bahwa lingkungan ini adalah rumah bagi keluarga kerajaan di Surakarta. Masih ada keluarga kerajaan yang tinggal di sebuah keraton, Keraton Surakarta Hadiningrat, di sini di Solo.
Juga, ternyata kios limun ini, bernama Lemonology, baru saja dibuka dan saya adalah pelanggan pertama mereka. Pemilik dan saya mengobrol sebentar dan kemudian saya menuju ke istana. Pada saat saya sampai di sana, saya melihat itu sudah tutup tapi tidak apa-apa, sudah larut dan saya lelah jadi saya akan pergi ke sana lain kali. Saya kembali beberapa hari kemudian dan membuat video jadi nantikan yang satu itu.
Setelah hampir tersiram oleh hujan, saya kembali ke hotel saya dan menikmati beberapa ramen dan menyebutnya sehari.

Welcome to Surakarta ..Nick. It's where my ancestors come from. There are 2 palaces in there, Kasunanan and Mangkunegaran. Now the kingdoms are just the symbol of the Javanese culture.

The big wall you overlook on your first sight seeing ner the hotel is The Baluwarti A.K.A King's palace wall. Its kind of fortress that was built around the Royal Palace complex for security reason .
I lived in Surakarta for 8 months. I got a wife there and we've been in the US almost 2 months now.

In the city of Surakarta there are 2 kingdoms, one is Surakarta Hadiningrat and the other is Pura Mangkunegaran. it is the birthplace of the king of Indonesia and the birthplace of presidents, politicians and businessmen. Surakarta and Jogja used to be the center of Indonesian civilization, even after Indonesia's independence, actually the first state capitals were placed in SURAKARTA AND JOGJA but due to big problems the state capital was moved to Jakarta with former Dutch colonial buildings. ..maybe one day if Jakarta sinks and the capital city is moved to Kalimantan, Indonesia's second civilization center will be moved again to Surakarta because the location of Surakarta is a strategic place and is in the middle of the island of Java and the island of Java is the center of the first human civilization in the world. Many ancient fossils that are hundreds of millions of years old were found there

Surakarta and Jogjakarta is a kingdom that is recognized in Indonesia even though in the republic they still have a king or ruler to this day. and Yogyakarta has special autonomy for the sultan as governor of Jogjakarta
I hope in the future Surakarta, Jogjakarta, Pakualaman, and Mangkunagaran can be united as Mataram once more.

Small town near Solo, why don't you visit AMBARAWA, there is a Rail Museum, Benteng Pendem, Rawa Pening, tample Gedong Songo (9 Hindus Tample), Rawa Pening and The Tallest St Mary Statue... and close by to Salatiga small town as well... proud of you!

Yogyakarta and Surakarta used to be one under Mataram Kingdom, but then it separated after the Giyanti agreement involving the Dutch

Nick, the guy from lemonology was just trying to tell you that the royals of the Yogyakarta Sultanate and the Surakarta Sunanates (rather than using the title "Sultan") are related and of the same dynasty. the difference is that Yogyakarta has its territory as an autonomous province of Indonesia. Both of these monarchies are the successors of the Mataram Sultanate (the last major independent kingdom in Java) that existed til 1755.

Solo is a nice small city. Way less hectic and less stressful than bigger cities like Jakarta. It's also close to a lot of destinations like Jogja, Karanganyar (Mt. Lawu), Salatiga, Boyolali, Klaten, etc. Warm people, very small crime rates. Pretty cheap living cost too. It's pretty close to my hometown and I wish to live close by if could land a remote job. Glad you enjoyed your stay Nick!
