  • After 30 days of fasting for Ramadan, Idul Fitri, also known as Lebaran in Indonesia, is finally here. I didn't do 30 days though, just one was enough for me. But for all those who did... congratulation! I'm here in Bagorejo Village in Jember, Indonesia to celebrate Lebaran with my friend Ibnu and his family. I met Ibnu 11 years ago in Japan when we both lived there. His family has been gracious enough to let me join in on the celebrations and truly experience the essence of Lebaran. It was a wonderful experience and I can't thank them and all the wonderful people of Bagorejo for letting me be a part of their special day. I'll remember it forever!

Here in Cape Town, South Africa especially the older generation also calls Eid-ul-fitr, Labarang. Also words like Pwasa and tramakasi are still used. A very large percentage of Muslims in South Africa and particularly in Cape Town has their ancestral roots in Indonesia. Many of our forefathers were brought over from Indonesia by the Dutch during colonial times as slaves because they resisted Dutch occupation. Some of the cultural practices I recognize and is still practiced today here in Cape Town.

Nick, when you shake hands with kids, they want to "salim". Salim is when the younger people touch the back of the elder's palm with the tip of their nose or forehead, this reflects a special respect from the young to the old.

If u asked how we can go through 30 days fasting, it takes years of practice to do it. Parents usualy would ask their children to try to fast starting from around 6 or 7 years old or even earlier. The kids would try fasting since early in the morning, break the fast at noon when the noon prayer start (around 12 pm), then fasting again until sunset (arround 5.30 to 6 pm).
We did that until we hit puberty (getting first period for girls and first nocturnal emission for boys) beacause that's the starting line to do full 30 days of fasting. But we can't just skip fasting when we want to. It's not allowed. The girls who get their period during ramadhan, pregnant & breastfeeding moms, people who're ill, and some other causes, they're allowed to skip fasting. They should do another fasting outside the ramdhan month as many as how long they skip the fasting, or in some cases they can pay some fine by providing foods for the poor. Actually muslims are not only fasting during ramadhan. There are some other type of fasting, monday & thursday fasting, daud fasting, etc. But, the ramadhan is a must for muslims bcs it's one of five pillars of islam
Fellow muslim friends, please correct me if i made mistake explaining this topic. Hope it'll make you understand more about fasting in ramadhan month

They will give u seat for sure after ur move so dont u worry. The worst u could have done was forcing ur seat somewhere although the seat was already pretty tight because they will feel "what an arrogant bule😅", even worse if you're taking place between the elder of the house. That will make a very bad impression of u😂 just fyi

It’s like a custom and a very polite way to greet older people (parents, uncle, aunt, grandparents, etc) when you meet them. usually the way to do it is like kissing the older people’s hand, but nowadays kids do it by touching their forehead to the other people’s hand😁

In the big city, Jakarta, we do have mosques with megaphones but not as loud as countryside's. In my area we don't celebrate Ramadhan with fire crackers every night, maybe some nights, but fire crackers are like a must and will be heard loudly in Malam Takbir (Idul Fitri eve) alongside the hymn to God.
Eventho government finally allow us to go Mudik this year, me and my family didn't go to countryside. I don't have grandparents anymore (may they rest in peace) and we didn't want to get jammed in the highway with other Jakartans (we knew it'll be a tough going-home journey).
I hope your first Idul Fitri left an amazing impression on you. On that day, everyone become a lot more kind hearted. Even i always feel that day brings positivities to all of us here in Indonesia. I always like the ambience Idul Fitri brings. Indeed, it is a very special day.

    Very... very lucky man, Bro...
    Matur suwun, Mas Ibnu...
    Enjoy there, Bro Nick...
Tetap prokes C-19... Salam sehat... 👍🏻💪🏼

TAPE (tapai) is my most favorite Indonesian snack. I always request my family to make it for Lebaran Day. So refreshing.
Btw, actually there's a regulation from the government of using the megaphone, that the volume shouldn't be too high, and it is used basically only for the call: "adzan", and chanting etc with it is allowed only about 5 minutes before that. Then for the rest of the religious activities such as preaching, tutoring, reading the holy book, etc, only 'inside' speakers should be used.
However, when it has become a "culture", people wouldn't change it. In a city with super dense population, the noise is even overwhelming, you know, like in "some" parts of Jakarta, Bandung, etc.
